Ask HN: What would you do to 10x an existing business?

Imagine you have an existing business at your hands. You have one or more products, some cash in the bank and a customer base of a few hundred B2B customers. If you had 12 months to 10x the revenue / profit - what would you do? What steps would you try?If you had 3 years, would you do something different?

Hey Jannes, currently we're (semi-)manually gathering the data. I'll look up the source for our 3.2 mill data point for iOS Apps.

And yes, you're right. We have a challenge to make the data comparable as some marketplaces publicly show download count where others completely hide it or only publish it in ranges.

+1 for the sort by popularity feature ;)

Do you have a source?

I'd believe the 15B is transaction volume (including investors buying/selling) not payments for regular goods?

Do you get transcripts from dropvox / are they searchable?! (Looking for something like this..)
Are you building a browser extension for this or how can I imagine using your tool?
Interesting, going to check it out - iOS only so far?
Yep, transcribing voice notes yourself sucks. Did that a few times - however I like recording voice notes so gotta find a solution here too.
Workflowy seems nice and easy to use. Will check it out!
Great advice! I think thats the main reason I want to use a reliable tool in my process: to be able to get it out of my head without thinking: this is going to be lost ;)
How do you like the tagging system of Bear?
Ha! I might need to introduce the "someday hell" board... ;-)
Nice, did you have a chance to try the "assistant" mode of Any.do?
Ok thanks! So if I understand it right you have a daily routine to "sort-and-review" any recent notes and all of them live in a single spreadsheet to be searchable, etc. I like the simplicity!
Yep, good point with the regularity! Still, depending on how the tool is able to match my workflow is quite critical I think. And lots of tools trying to enforce their workflow on me ;-)

Going to check out Omnifocus btw..

Thanks for the links, I didn't know simplenote yet.
I Like the "kids add stuff too" - as long as they dont mess with it ;-)

How do you add tasks/ideas/notes on the go?

Wow,thanks! Sounds quite established! And I really like the "send stuff to your future self" ;-) Currently I use calendar entries for such things but thats not quite ideal.

Ask HN: How do you take idea notes / voice memos / reminders to yourself?

Do you use just paper, Email drafts or any special apps? And how do you remember where you have noted down some specific thought or idea?I've tried several apps like Evernote, Trello, Asana or voice Memo apps ... Also I am maintaining like 2-3 ToDo lists on paper troughout my home. But in the end I often loose tasks, or interesting ideas come up again like 2 months later and I cant remember...

Writing extensive TODO comments for future features instead of actually implementing them. Never read a single ToDo comment afterwards. Ever.
If I had to give advice to my 17yo self it would be this:

- ditch "gaming" as a hobby. Its a lot of fun but you'll regret most of the time you spent later on. Go create more stuff instead...

- think about the "business side" of software too, not just the technical part. There are more ways to make money than you know / can think of! (I was surrounded with loads of crappy share- and freeware tools where people were still making a living of. I did not realize this and skipped a lot of opportunities.)

- stop "coding" in VisualBasic ;-) try other languages (However, if you just want to quickly get something live, use what you know best already)

- Keep your eyes open for new emerging platforms and technology which pop up every century or so... and get onboard early on to understand the dynamics, play around, try your ideas. You'll have a first mover advantage for ~1-2 years and can get away with almost any not-too-perfect-solution because there is nothing else solving it right now. (Think the Internet, think cheap web hosting, think online gaming, think iPhone / AppStore & Smartphones in general, then Android, then xxx, ...

- Whatever projects you start. Make a commitment to yourself to launch them all. At least a version 0.0.0.1 .. ´. Nothing wrong with a crappy and dead tool or website which is not supported since years - but everything wrong with a private repository and an un-launched 99% ready software/webstie where you spent countless of your life-hours on! Launch everything!

- Oh yes, and just try ALL your crazy ideas too. You have nothing to loose. Just do them!

Re:Ask HN: Ideas for wedding website? on Friday September 15, 2017 @07:01AM (#15256099)
Planning one for next year, thinking about a website to send around. Quick thoughts:

- website is (maybe) looked at twice, (if at all). On invitation + on the day itself. - so updating the page might not reach all invited guests - show locations on a map (church, party, possible accomodations) - show schedule of the day, when to be where, what happens... - show contact info of relevant people - show possible accomodations (if guest need to book their rooms themselves) including any blocked contingents and expiry date of those blocked rooms

I hope that helps a bit...

(PS: would probably not pay for it since adding a page to any of my wordpress systems or own HTML would be easier. Might use some free offer. You could make money off the hotel bookings if the guests book trough your system. Check this interview where the guy is doing it for conference organizers: https://www.indiehackers.com/businesses/stay22)

What about a simple game clone, add multiplayer for added complexity. Forget about Performance at first ;)
