The situation everywhere looks dire. These aren‘t social media platforms anymore but tools for propaganda and repression against opposition groups across different countries.

Great, now do the HASVIK sliding doors mount on a PAX, please. Joke aside, however good a manual is, reality is imperfect. Assembly often requires a bit of improvisation that can't be learned online.

Wow, well done! Please share your strategy.

> but for personal projects that aren't shared, being able to vibe code a quick thingy

I'm doing exactly that right now. Vibe-coding a small MacOS app that I had for years. I bought it and all, but it never had all the features I needed, and it has stuff I never ever used. So, I wrote a spec, made screenshots and let the agent do its thing. It's coming out great, I will be using this thing daily. The plus for me is that I didn't need to learn/code a UI framework, wire up UI components, etc., which is knowledge that I honestly would have little need of in my daily job.

Exactly right. Many never check the release notes of those libs on bump either. To this add copy & paste from Stack Overflow we used to do. People are just afraid of losing their jobs now, so naturally we all got defensive.

It’s actually very addicting once you play a couple of sessions. The scoreboard is crazy. Still don’t know how anyone makes it past wave (layer) 35-37.
Not all mistakes are code, a lot are feature design mistakes, and if SWEs would always be responsible about PM mistakes, then why not use Claude anyway?

Stephen Wolfram also looks favorable to using AI in programming and he has been programming a lot. I guess the context of how these tool are used is the important part here.
Re:AI is a tool and using it well takes skill on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @07:43AM (#50086118)
That's a bit of a straw man argument there. I'm actually in the "live and raise a family" group and if you believe this requires "no ambition" of any kind, I have to disagree with you at 100%.

To those that don't want to learn anyway. The rest will be just fine, if not better.

Re:European Alternatives on Sunday October 11, 2026 @06:41AM (#50041711)
More like retaliate HOW? Like I’ll care if Microsoft or Amazon services become more expensive in Europe. That’d actually be great for Europeans.
Re:LLMs Aren't Inevitable on Saturday October 10, 2026 @09:29AM (#50032760)
There‘s hardly anything to talk about, since most of those anti-AI people use LLMs anyway. It‘s hypocrisy at best. If only that energy could be channeled in doing more about open-weight models-we need more AI-ownership, not less AI. That LLMs will somehow magically disappear should Anthropic or OpenAI go bust, is nothing but wishful thinking.

All our products and tools around them are built by using Gradle, for more than a decade now. We have no Android and no Kotlin-only projects. I would never switch it for Maven. In fact, I don't remember the last time I used Maven for a Java project. But I guess everyone has their preference.

A recruiter on LinkedIn once reached out to me and sent me to an interview about a Java position. They interviewed me about JavaScript instead. I haven't used LinkedIn to find a job since then.

Re:So long Google, and thanks for all the nudes on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @05:08AM (#49890269)
No, this invites slop rather than stopping it. 12 testers is trivial to buy online or swap for on Reddit and Discord, so only hobbyists get blocked. Note that this requirement also affects PWAs which is quite funny to be honest. To this the fact that some people register businesses and provide paid "publishing services" to 3rd party devs over their accounts. Is this really the best Google can do? Laughable.

Look, not everyone is chasing subscriptions, ads and thousands of users, and with Google constantly squeezing side-loading, the Play store is becoming the only distribution channel left on mainline Android.

But yeah, I guess it's not a big loss, most people install 0 apps per month anyway.

Re:So long Google, and thanks for all the nudes on Monday September 28, 2026 @02:53PM (#49882692)
I think I'm done with Android apps development. The following publishing requirements just closed the door for me as a hobby developer:

> Have at least 12 testers opted-in to your closed test.

> Run your closed test with at least 12 testers, for 14 days

The funny thing is this seems to apply to recently-created personal publisher accounts. I had a very old publisher account but because I was unable to move my account owner to another email address, I closed it and registered a new one. Little did I know what this would lead to later on.

> We hear this too often: “XMPP uses XML. It should use JSON—it’s more modern.”

I can't take this write-up seriously if it starts like that. I still read the whole thing though and I couldn't find any solid argument as to why someone would prefer XML to JSON for XMPP.

> This is especially true in browser environments, where XMPP streams run over WebSockets, which naturally frames the XMPP protocol. That’s why you are never actually working with XML trees consuming large chunks of memory. Modern implementations like XMPP.js go further and use LTX—a lightweight parser built specifically for XMPP’s streaming model—rather than the browser’s DOM parser. The result: developers work with JSON-like objects anyway. The wire format becomes invisible to your application code.

That to me, is an argument for using JSON, not XML. XML is strong when you have elements referencing other elements in your document structure or DOCTYPE for grammar defs. I might be missing something but I don't get how streaming XML is to be preferred over JSON for XMPP.

This is such a good video. Instant sub. Next to tech bros, we should also put AI-cringe bros.
We should write more web apps, more PWAs and have some sort of a way to distribute those without proprietary app stores. It's true not every mobile app can be a web app, but for a lot of cases web apps work great.
Re:Java 27 Released on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @04:28AM (#49723545)
> Btw, have you tried Leyden/AOT for better startup times? Curious about your experiences with that.

Nope, not yet. It's a good question given that up to now we used to deliver our product only on-premises and Windows Server-only, but this year we are now finally going with the Cloud, which means Docker containers and Linux.

If I remember correctly Leyden required some sort of warm-up and training data collection before being able to effectively execute AOT, right? I need to freshen up my info on that.

I did try GraalVM-compiled Java executables a couple of years ago and they were not bad, but the binaries were quite big (not a showstopper though) and the class-loading issues were kind of a PITA.

Indeed. But Lotus Notes actually had the design and data stored independent of one another and you had database templates. You could update your design without breaking the data, or even have entirely different design that works with the existing data model.

This capsule thing seems to store the design itself within the database, which is odd to me. I guess I don't get it at 100%.

Re:Java 27 Released on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @02:54PM (#49717093)
I use Java every day but just to point out that your info about Go‘s GC seems out of date. They switched to Green Tea in 1.25 (I think?) - new GC that even has AVX-512 optimizations. Not sure what you mean by basic about the compiler but it‘s very fast and supports a large set of platforms. That‘s not basic to me.

We are using JDK25 and are considering rewriting parts of our product to Go because of lower memory pressure and faster startup time, i.e., cloud friendly. I actually love both languages.

Neat game! I managed to get to level 11 but got beat up.

There can be a set of really cool things one can do with Asteroids. Some years ago I made a game which is a mix of Asteroids+Bomberman+Pacman.

> However, you’re doing a disservice to a lot of artists by dismissing their role in it all.

That is a false assumption. I do not dismiss the artist role, but I also would not be interested in the artist if their art does not move me. People generally do not know who Banksy is, but he is being defined by his art, not by his persona. That may very well happen for an AI agent sometime in the future.

Re:Do people prefer stories written by AI? on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @10:06AM (#49626843)
"Art is in the eye of the beholder" - it is me, who enjoys art and how it affects me and works with my emotions that is affected by it. Who or what the artist is, should be irrelevant, unless the artist imposes some monetary value I want to profit from at some point.
