It's not an IDE: it's a religion.
Re:DOGE as a National Cyberattack on Thursday February 13, 2025 @10:22AM (#43036754)
LOL... wow! I thought the "national cyberattack" and the root override/hijacking was far more relevant than the connection with the organization which shall not be named which is nominally led by he who shall not be named.
Re:DOGE as a National Cyberattack on Thursday February 13, 2025 @09:59AM (#43036506)
Why isn't it front-page news on HN rather than being flagged? Is it just because Musk's "DOGE" is in the title? I think it's pretty significant that a number of agencies have handed root access to people who shouldn't have it and have made changes that could have significant unintended consequences. This is could end up being a case study in why you don't allow unfettered access even when ordered by the incoming regime (be it POTUS or CEO) because there be dragons and the new people don't know where they are yet.

I thought Stripe was a real merchant account.

If they are making editorial/values based judgement on who they allow to process payments on their platform then it seems they cannot be immune under the common carrier defense and are liable for being sued for refusing to do business with lawful entities, no?
Is podcast production somehow not a good or service? Is the problem that I'm using the wrong word -- donation instead of tip -- on the button?
So if I sell digital certificates -- a PDF that says someone donated to my little media side-hustle -- it would be all good? See that's the problem: nobody will tell me what I can do to come into compliance. And as for the banks: I have been paying my taxes for years and the bank connected to this account has zero issues with what I do and are happy to deposit checks made out to my DBA (and then charge me a fee for having a business checking account).

Ask HN: Is Stripe the new PayPal, cancelling user accounts without explanation?

I have a side-hustle doing podcast production and hosting. Rather than charging a fixed fee I operate on the "value for value" model: if you got some value from the work I'm doing then please visit my website and return some value by sending in a donation, either a check in the mail or online using Stripe. This has worked very well for the past few years and I've been able to cover all of my...

I think they mainly have an issue with idiots and hypocrites. They are fans of RFK Jr, Tulsi Gabbard, and lots of others; they also slam lots of republicans as well (for being hypocritical idiots).
Why would a non-republican have an issue with No Agenda?
JCD is a much better writer than he is a podcaster.
Re:iPhone 14 Pro vs. $20k in “PROFESSIONAL” Cameras on Wednesday September 21, 2022 @06:21PM (#32932344)
Jared Polen (FroKnowsPhoto) is an acquired taste and not everyone likes the way he presents things but he's extremely thorough on his reviews.
How much of an "advantage" is it for manufacturing to solder the RAM chip(s) to the motherboard? Would it really take a lot more time and expense to install RAM that can be replaced/upgraded? This is the one thing that I wish I could upgrade on a lot of machines.
Which leads to the question: will cameras be "fingerprinted" before being sold?
When was the last time members of Congress actively tried to get Big Tech to censor something?

There is also no way to stop people from writing/committing cyberattacks: let's ban computers and dismantle the internet.
Don't you mean "1/1000th less" developers working on it?
Re:AWS US-East-1 Problems on Wednesday November 25, 2020 @11:13AM (#25210741)
I love that 8:56 AM PST is a future timestamp. Yes, things are somewhat sub-optimal at AWS at the moment... but is this isolated to us-east-1 or are other regions affected as well?
> building subsequent plants based on an existing design actually costs more, not less, than building the initial plant.

Unless building a nuke plant is a common thing where the crew that built a plant in Georgia can then go build one just like it in Alabama then one in Tennessee, then in Ohio, etc, then I don't see how building two plants with identical layouts can leverage economies of scale. For example: Wolf Creek NGS in Kansas and Calloway NGS in Missouri were apparently the first two plants in the US to be built using the same blueprints. If two more plants were built today with those same blueprints but by different construction crews who don't have any of the tribal knowledge from the construction of Wolf Creek and Calloway then what you have are four essentially bespoke plants that just happen to use the same blueprints.

What's the TL;DR breakdown of who the target audiences are for FreeBSD, NetBSD, and OpenBSD?

This doesn't quite mesh with the slogan "of course it runs NetBSD"...

> I agree that a better template would be great...

Is there a serious effort on this front? At the very least a mobile version of Electron[1] applications would be a great interim step: you just need a browser for the UI and performance-critical bits can be written in C/C++ for accuracy and speed. Ultimately a modular UI paradigm can replace the dependence on a browser but that is likely years down the road.

[1] Cordova used to be the model; Ionic's Capacitor project is far more advanced but targeting iOS and Android specifically.

Using this rationale the Facebook and Twitter apps should be removed from the Play Store as well: an abundance of hate speech can be found in/with those apps.
Re:KeePassXC 2.6.1 on Thursday August 20, 2020 @11:29AM (#24224262)
The KeePassXC developers are quite conscious about memory security and implement that in XC in a way that's not really possible with a .NET application like KeePass: https://keepassxc.org/blog/2019-02-21-memory-security/

What vendor lock-in? They make it plainly clear how to export your data from BitWarden: https://bitwarden.com/help/article/export-your-data/

Personally I think it would be awesome if Bitwarden gave you the option to export your password vault as a KDBX4 file. What's the best way to fund a bounty program for adding this feature to Bitwarden?

Under the broad heading of soft skills you could learn how to spell and become a better writer. Most technical people aren't good communicators so taking a course in composition and storytelling would put you in better standing compared to most.
Just in time to buy new ARM-powered computers to replace your Intel-powered Macs... convenient!
