Where does the data come from?
Re:Fast Approximate Logarithms, Part III: The Formulas on Saturday June 27, 2015 @12:06PM (#9790568)
I have found the bug.

The else block in the last if statement is missing this: signif = signif - 1.0; before the lg2 = FN; line.

Then the relative error becomes similar to what the bits of accuracy table predicts, which is very low.

Re:Fast Approximate Logarithms, Part III: The Formulas on Saturday June 27, 2015 @06:30AM (#9789736)
I copy pasted the code and ran a unit test, which it failed to pass. Inputs are a positive floats and the outputs are compared to the results of log2f, then the average error is calculated, which was way off.

Did you try to compare results of input values between 0.5 and 1.5 to the library log2f function?

Re:Fast Approximate Logarithms, Part III: The Formulas on Saturday June 27, 2015 @05:20AM (#9789594)
I have tried the code posted at the end of the article and it gives wildly incorrect results for input values in range of [ 0.5 , 1.5 ). Also for output, starting with multiplies of 4, values suddenly diverge and then start to converge towards correct value until the next multiple.

Did I forget to do something with the result or is there a bug?

If you like audiobooks you can try LibriVox.

https://librivox.org/search

https://librivox.org/search?primary_key=30&search_category=g...

They are very transparent. In my experience, about 95% of the books were pleasing to listen to.

LibriVox recordings are Public Domain in the USA. If you are not in the USA, please verify the copyright status of these works in your own country before downloading, otherwise you may be violating copyright laws.

Sure this is marginally better if you have a static structure, in all other cases you lose.

Let me remind everyone that downloading and running unknown executables is borderline insane.

@OP Where is the source?, if you want to share, distribute the source not the exe.

Re:Ceres Spots Continue to Mystify in Latest Dawn Images on Tuesday June 23, 2015 @03:54PM (#9767323)
The image is brightened. This makes the spots stand out.

The surface of Ceres is effectively black, but the image shows it as grey to light grey. Consequently the spots shine, but in reality they are just white.

Re:C Puzzles on Tuesday June 23, 2015 @11:58AM (#9765499)
You don't know C.

Reinterpreting an object as an incompatible object is undefined. int and float are incompatible.

C Standard also specifically states that using an incorrect printf format specifier will result in undefined behavior.

Re:C Puzzles on Tuesday June 23, 2015 @06:54AM (#9763796)
You missed the relevant text:

>or equivalent; 10)

>10) Thus, int can be replaced by a typedef name defined as int, or the type of argv can be written as char * * argv, and so on.

And Standard also says that:

>or in some other implementation-defined manner.

and:

>In a freestanding environment (in which C program execution may take place without any benefit of an operating system), the name and type of the function called at program startup are implementation-defined.

So main can be pretty much anything according to the Standard, depending on the system.

Re:Taylor Swift wins battle with Apple on Monday June 22, 2015 @05:24AM (#9757155)
If this was a intentional decision from Apple from the very start, then it isn't a win for the customers, since they were manipulated.
Re:Taylor Swift wins battle with Apple on Monday June 22, 2015 @05:21AM (#9757147)
I see this as a company that has decided not to pay their partners, reversed their position. Hardly flattering.
Re:Marketers’ Fixation on the Millennial Generation on Monday June 22, 2015 @01:48AM (#9756402)
We do teach cooking in schools. At least in Europe. See my parent post, that class was mandatory.

There are plenty of classes that teach non-academic subjects, finance should be one of them, since we life in an money centered society.

Re:Marketers’ Fixation on the Millennial Generation on Sunday June 21, 2015 @07:22PM (#9755420)
But are you really ignored?

Quickly take a look around your office/home and take a look at the open tabs in your browser and count the ads and the brands.

Re:Marketers’ Fixation on the Millennial Generation on Sunday June 21, 2015 @07:07PM (#9755377)
This isn't exclusive to US.

I remember having a class called "household" taking about an hour a week for a year or two in my primary education, where we learned mostly about cooking. Yes, I'm not joking. A class about finance could take the same amount of time, since apparently there is time available in the school schedule, and be very worthwhile.

Can you elaborate on how does the educational system influences personal finances, and what do you mean by that?
Re:To Apple, Love Taylor on Sunday June 21, 2015 @07:56AM (#9753068)
Taylor Swift can withhold her music from streaming services because she's a PHENOMENON who can still shift albums via iTunes (and even physically) because people want her music. Artists starting out don't have that luxury and, increasingly, their music won't get the listens if it's not on streaming services.

Did you read the post where she explains what is her goal for doing this? Here is the relevant part:

This is not about me. Thankfully I am on my fifth album and can support myself, my band, crew, and entire management team by playing live shows. This is about the new artist or band that has just released their first single and will not be paid for its success. This is about the young songwriter who just got his or her first cut and thought that the royalties from that would get them out of debt. This is about the producer who works tirelessly to innovate and create, just like the innovators and creators at Apple are pioneering in their field…but will not get paid for a quarter of a year’s worth of plays on his or her songs.

The problem is that it is automatic, it spreads without confirming anything and without any deliberate action.
Re:Breaking the Zyzzyva encryption on Saturday June 20, 2015 @05:06PM (#9751048)
Wouldn't it be easier to just dump the entire process after the database is loaded and decrypted in memory, and pick out the words?
Re:Breaking the Zyzzyva encryption on Saturday June 20, 2015 @04:48PM (#9751007)
No, that wouldn't make sense because of the false positives.

You could instead store only the hashes of the words, using a sha256 or something similar.

I got a partially rendered page before, but it is not working anymore.
Re:The Brain Age on Saturday June 20, 2015 @08:25AM (#9749794)
Say Yes to NoScript.
Exactly. I wonder how would this go down if the writer of the article compared IMAX directly instead of quoting a source.
IMAX sized. Interesting phrase. I wonder if I can now legally use it in marketing, publishing, reviews..., since I will be quoting the company itself.
Re:IMAX’s absurd attempt to censor Ars on Friday June 19, 2015 @01:00PM (#9746132)
No, because IMAX can't set up a movie theater in your home.
Re:The Amazing Disappearing BSD License (2005) on Friday June 19, 2015 @08:01AM (#9744126)
How will specifically writing your own license increase freedom and democracy??

What everyone should do is choose a license.

Re:The Amazing Disappearing BSD License (2005) on Friday June 19, 2015 @07:51AM (#9744099)
Am I the only one thinking that:

THIS SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED BY THE COPYRIGHT HOLDERS AND CONTRIBUTORS "AS IS" AND ANY EXPRESS OR IMPLIED WARRANTIES, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS... and continued

is incredibly important.
