Ask HN: What's out there that isn't B2B SaaS?

I've been looking for new roles recently and it seems everything in tech is a B2B SaaS product. How should I be widening my search or what sectors can I look at that still balances tech but with something that doesn't feel like one of seven clones of the same thing?

Ask HN: What would you build a back end in for a future proof app

I know the old adage goes use what you know, but I'm about to build out a new project that needs to stand the test of time.Running everything on PaaS or 'magic' backends feels a bit scary. Is Rust or Go still the king of the hill for long lasting performant processes or would Elixir be worth a look?My use case is building a networking backend for a video game, but I'm wondering what people look...

Ask HN: Keeping faces off AI face search engines

After listening to a podcast about AI face search engines I became increasingly worried about photos of family members/children/elderly that may not be up to speed or even able to access the search engines to prevent their face being shared online. What is the best preventative measure for keeping oneself off these search engines? Is it purely running searches on yourself/family and removing...

Ask HN: Finding source of AI models generated answer?

This is maybe more possible with local models than it is commercial ones. This question is in the context of image generation.I was wondering if on any of the open LLM's there was a way of auditing the trail of data a model had processed ie what image was used to generate an image for a specific prompt.

Ask HN: Are there any 'ethical' AI creation tools?

With the advent of Sora it’s clear that AI can help with the creative process but I feel there’s still some big ethical questions around where the data for these creations is sourced from. However for a creator that maybe wants to leverage AI without walking all over previous artists copyright are there any up and coming tools that could be used ethically to expand or enhance the creative process?

Ask HN: How do you discover new things on the internet in 2023?

With the fall of Twitter and the fragmentation of where everyone has ended up I'm finding that I'm discovering less and less views/posts/articles that are out of my comfort zone.I find without the stream of people I had curated for years to be pretty diverse in interest subject matter I tend to just frequent the same haunts every day. What do you do to discover new things or stay on top of...

I was a lot more jaded than I currently am. I recently switched jobs to a food eco calculation app [1], and while yes there are problems there's much better advice out there now for how you can contribute, rather than just "switch off your lights". We've been working on recipe swaps so you can see kgs off your daily habits.

Also speaking with clients, corporations want to help. Yes there is some marketing and tax incentive, but we've seen more interest in making permanent change beyond just a PR stunt.

Ask HN: Best tool for mapping out a new software project?

I usually find at the outset of a new project there seems to be a nest of spreadsheets for schema, photos of whiteboards for how everything clicks together and either wireframes or figma files for front end prototypes. Is there an all in one mapping tool for this kind of exercise or is the best way to either write it all down on paper or adhere to the above nest?

Ask HN: What do you use as your Home folder cloud storage?

I used to use Dropbox as a portable home folder that I could use to kickstart each machine with but also useful documents that I need on every machine. A few years back I moved it to iCloud for convenience, but lets say reliability there hasn't been the best. What do you use as your cloud flash drive these days and why?

Ask HN: How to start a public identity from scratch in late 2022?

For the past few years conventional wisdom would have said to spin up the the usual socials (Twitter for thought, Instagram for visuals, Short Video for younger audiences), but with the amount of turmoil in those spaces at the moment are they really the best places to start building an individual platform.I've seen a movement back to personal blogs and newsletters but do they provide enough...

Re:Full WireGuard Support in ProtonVPN for Android on Monday October 11, 2021 @03:40PM (#28832137)
It’s nice to see one of these providers upgrading their protocols away from openvpn and the like, but it still doesn’t solve the problem of these commercial VPN’s are still just someone else’s computer.
For now Elixir/Phoenix as the ecosystem has a little more support (even if some packages have been abandoned). Elixir has also started to get first class status in places like Fly.io and Render which makes releasing a little less painless.

I've only just discovered Lucky, but definitely one to keep an eye on to see who puts something into production with it.

Ask HN: Up and running web framework for 2021?

I realise the old adage is use what you know, but sometimes it's worth picking something new up. I was wondering what people would currently reach for today as a "batteries included" framework that lets you get to building as fast as possible, but keeping an eye on how it might grow.I've heard rails is getting a bit too unwieldy, the js world is focused on front end and Laravel is growing for...

I've moved over to Polywork. Which has a bit more of a tongue in cheek feel, but definitely feels better thank Linked in does, with a better community.
