Ask HN: Got celebrity to tweet about my project...

she's going to tweet to her many thousands of followers sometime next week. It's a PHP/MySQL website hosted on Dreamhost. I've never had to scale, and don't know anything about handling traffic larger than a few people an hour. How should I prepare for this?

Ask HN: How *hard* is Stanford CS?

I'm in the CS program at a university with a top-20 CS program. It's actually been quite easy, and I only have two CS classes left to graduate (along with a bunch of others).I'm thinking hard about transferring to Stanford. And I'm worried. How difficult is Stanford's CS curriculum, really? Will I be prepared for it with just my handful of (not so hard) C++ and Java classes? Am I smart...

Ask HN: Email/SMS ads?

I'm working on a web service which requires email and phone number during signup. My proposition is, if the user signs up to use the free service, I can text/email that user once a month.First: what do you think about this model?Second: Where can I find people/business to pay for the ads (both email and sms)?

Ask HN: Web IDE (Eclipse)?

A friend of mine mentioned that he'd like to take the open-source Eclipse code and make it into a web app. You'd be able to code and do everything you want, all in the browser.I'm just a beginner, and don't have much perspective on this. What do you guys think? Good idea? Would you use it? Is this the future?

Ask HN: How to get ideas?

Just wondering how you go about cultivating ideas.Do you, for instance, have a routine where you sit down and think about new ideas every so often? Or do you just wait for one to hit you?How do you get your ideas? (Also, please note if you think you're effective in how you do so. Have you had - and implemented - great ideas?)

Ask HN: When to learn AJAX?

I read through several Javascript tutorials last week. This weekend I've been reading/experimenting with a bunch of JQuery stuff. Now, on the JQuery site, a good number of the articles mention AJAX. I don't know anything about AJAX (yet). What should I know about it to start out, and when should I start learning it? (After JQuery or now.)

Ask HN: Why not PHP?

Forgive me for the naive question, but: why is PHP considered so inferior to Ruby/Python?And, as a beginner, do you recommend going with PHP to start with, or straight into Ruby/Python?

Ask HN: How do geniuses think? How do you think?

I've recently been engrossed by the question of how geniuses and highly intelligent people think. There's bits and pieces of information online. What I'd really like to see, though, is (a) geniuses describe their thought process and (b) a smart person voicing is interior monologue while attacking a problem.1) Do you know of any information like this? Link?2) Otherwise: do you think in a way...

Re:Tell HN: Gmail plugin idea. on Thursday October 14, 2010 @10:41PM (#1793490)
Even better: put Google Calendar on the right of every email. (Maybe make a tabbed pane where you can sort through phone numbers and maps.) I'd use the calendar feature like no other.

Tell HN: Gmail plugin idea.

If it's not already possible, here's a broad idea for a gmail plugin. - Implement ability to right click on any phone number in an email and choose "Call with Gmail" - Implement ability to right click on any address and choose "Pull up with gmail." The map would then show up and be functional on the right side of the screen. That is all. Add onto it if you want.

I can do HTML/CSS and design, but I can't code. I bet a lot of people are in my situation, or even worse.I don't have a technical founder, but I want to start a startup, via outsourcing. Ask HN: I want to start a clothing company.

I can make the website, but don't know where to even begin to get the clothes made well, on the cheap.I'm male, and want to design male clothes. (Think: t-shirts and tanks.) I would design everything myself (probably with photoshop). After that - after I get a site up and sketch out my ideas - where do I go? Where can I get the clothes made, for instance?

Ask HN: SEO checklists and what to do next?

I just finished reading the SEOmoz beginner guide. And it seems to me that everything I read could be summarized in a tidy checklist. Are there SEO "to-do" checklists (starting from the lowest hanging fruit and increasing in complexity) online? As well: I'm interesting in expanding my knowledge of SEO. What should I read and do next?

Ask HN: Is this UX?

I'm taking a class in user experience at my nearby junior college. And some of it seems really practical; but other parts of it don't.For instance, a few weeks ago we spend a good amount of time creating personas for our target users. And then we created storyboards and scenarios. And so on.In a few weeks, according to the syllabus, we're going to do user research methods I've never heard of:...

Ask HN: What questions do you ask yourself often/repeatedly?

Some of mine, wherever I am, include: - Why is this like THIS? And how could I make this beter? - STOP - Why are you doing this? (This is usually when I'm doing something I shouldn't be, like incessantly checking HN.) - Will I regret not doing this? (Whenever a big decision needs to be made.)And you?
