But why am I here? Because I care about worker's rights and read this website daily, because it's integral to my hobbies+career? And the oft-repeated sentiments here regarding labor, the generous job-providers, and delusion about wealth and consumerism, DIRECTLY ENABLE CAPITALISTIC EXPLOITATION.
Some folks here need to hear they're not special, sorry, not sorry.
I'm out of the country, I complete 4x $20 payments to a friend I'm visiting. I try to do the 5th and it wants to me to "Add a Mobile Number" to verify my identity.
Brilliant PayPal. You already have my email on file. It says confirmed. I have 2FA enabled. And now, to verify my identity, you need me to enroll a "new" phone number. How in the **, exactly, is that going to verify my identity. And how screwed up are your systems that your left brain and right brain are out of sync.
Granted, I basically have to call them every 2 years for some similar sort of "your website just told me to go F myself, can you press the magic buttons to fix it since you can't, you know, actually fix your systems.".
EDIT: The clencher to this story is calling PayPal and getting the sweetest older lady from Texas that, without asking me any further verification questions, pressed a button and said "okay, try again", and wouldn't tell me anything else. Only to hit the same issue ~24 hours later.
That self-exceptionalism? Yeah, most of everyone that hasn't already internalized not to use PayPal will do the same thing you did.
It's futile. Let me guess, do you use a Password Manager (bonus, other than LastPass?)?
Here's another futile one, you, yes, you, really need to make backups and replicate time-snapshots off-site.
1. They insist on using voice menus that are only ever capable of servicing requests that I can already do online, or don't work because they're jammed up by the same backend issue that their website hits.
2. They try to auto-enroll me in Voice ID despite always going out of my way to demand that feature not be enabled.
3. Use TOTPs sent to SMS instead of any halfway reasonable TOTP/FIDO2 solution.
US Banks are a joke. So much so that I actively root for them to be hacked so a light can be shone on the fact that my god damn Xbox account is far more secure (first line security) than my Bank account (I do realize that Schwab will probably make me whole faster than Microsoft would in the case of some act of God compromise).
Someone with this perspective, please, help me understand - Give me a base salary, a rent, and a monthly expense that doesn't let you save up 6months of runway after 2+ years of employment.
Or somehow thinks "within [their] means" means that they're untouchable and unfirerable. Bet the general sentiment towards unemployment and collective bargaining has changed around here recently! Or not, tech workers are great at excusing-exceptionalism.
EDIT: This actually makes me wonder. I would really like to see data about peoples' empathy regarding unemployment/homelessness/unions and their ability to withstand an unexpected job-loss - how much "F you" money do they have saved, how much do they live conservatively?
The folks around me born into money are much more comfortable "spending their paycheck" than those of us that came from more middle-class backgrounds and graduated into comfortable money.
today? checks created date.
I mean, lol, this place was basically blasting anyone who dared say GPT Bing was going to be less than the revolution of our lifetimes. Right before it went off the rails.
Sometimes it's really a wonder to imagine the world some people here seem to want to live in.
What I perceive as a general normalization of obesity feels... very corporate, or certainly too convenient for corporate interests. Americans fail to consider many aspects of their lives regarding their health because they're trained to trust brands, and that doubly/triply extends to ignorance around diet and nutrition.
Food, sex, alcohol. All vices that Americans glorify and demonize in nearly exactly the least effective ways.
IDK, I don't want to preach but my body now, compared to with an extra 80-100lbs on it? It's hard to put into words how many aspects of my life are markedly better.
If the response to this is "well I better embrace my identity as a man who only has worth via a job and deserving of love in exchange for money"... then yeah, /r/arethestraightsokay ?
Sometimes I just wish I could instill a sense of "this is YOUR life, your ONLY life" for others the way I've embraced in my late-20s. So many people barreling faster and faster ahead to avoid any examination of their actual relationship to happiness. And then the masses to give excuses for why an unexamined life is unavoidable (lest they consider their own).
And gasp, yes, younger generations are absolutely seeing men taking time off and relying on the woman's income.
I honestly just can't with this stuff. I forget what it's like going from gay/queer spaces back to straight world. Y'all get hung up on the absolute silliest, sexist, unfair stuff that ironically is actually a serious issue worth consideration in the grand scheme of advocating for men.
Huh? OP has basic needs covered, isn't in direct threat of being deported, can we please not subtley reinforce the made-up things that trigger identity crisises in these types of folks?
Like I get it, it's HN, so half the answers are going to be some highly ignorant advice to just double down on the self-imposed identity crisis, but can we please just not?
OP, you are worthy of love and respect, regardless of your employment status. And you are worthy of your own love and self-respect. I think you have valid reasons why getting employed is challenging for you, but I would encourage you to take solace in other parts of your identity that you are proud of.
