Re:Berkshire Hathaway's Charlie Munger dies aged 99 on Tuesday November 28, 2023 @05:48PM (#38452600)
Genuine question: why is there such an outpouring of love for him? I know he was a very successful investor, but what beyond that has garnered him the adulation of so many people?
Many people are overweight by choice in the same way alcoholics or crack addicts are addicted to substances by choice. There are very powerful chemical and subconscious factors at play that make it incredibly difficult to exercise one's will. That semiglutides are proving to be remarkably effective at helping people both make better dietary decisions as well as reduce substance use, should tell you that the problem isn't as simplistic as you've made it out to be.
I don't mean to be facetious in any way, but how does AGI/ASI protect itself from humans simply pulling the plug?

Echoing this. A bit miffed they've invested in an entirely new product without fixing the software issues of the C1.
Re:Ask HN: How do I start over at 37? on Thursday October 12, 2023 @06:14PM (#37863860)
How do I realistically compete with those who are younger, more nimble, with impressive educational & professional backgrounds? The startup world seems to be far more of a status game nowadays than when I fell in love with it 15 years ago. What does someone with 0 social capital to open doors do, especially at this age?

Ask HN: How do I start over at 37?

Quick background: Grew up in an immigrant household with very little in the way of resources, guidance, encouragement. Was enamored by Silicon Valley and tech from a young age, but foolishly followed the family tradition of medicine despite hating it as I felt I had no choice. Went to medical school, dropped out, worked a few odd end gigs for the next couple years, stumbled into a PM role that...

Why is my post flagged?
Have you tried MDMA?
Expectations (of being an adult with baseline ability to be effective and manage life's responsibilities)
I see this advice a lot and it is incredibly overwhelming to execute. "Quit snacking" alone is a monstrous task.
I'm diagnosed with CPTSD and tried ketamine-assisted therapy for over a year. It certainly helped with awareness and introspection, but has done nothing for actual behavioral modification, sadly. Willing to give MDMA a try but afraid to go underground for it.
Fear of failure, of making wrong decisions, being a poor husband, an ineffective adult, of being screwed over and manipulated as I often have been due to my naive and overly trusting nature.
I was raised in an Orthodox Christian church, and I blame it for much of the parental authoritarianism and shame I was subject to, although I do recognize that is more an institutional thing than it is the philosophy. I at times wish I had discovered the religion later in life like you did.
Thanks, but I don't need a nice chat; I need a longterm solution.

Ask HN: Trauma has broken me. Nothing has worked. Alternatives to suicide?

Every day I'm drowning in depression, anxiety, and fear. No amount of therapy, medication, psychedelics, meditation has put a real dent in the issue. Trying to lose weight, fix my sleep, sharpen my cognitive abilities, in addition to managing a marriage within the context of my emotional instability is a Herculean task I have failed time and time again. With every failed attempt to correct...

If there are any glaring areas of ignorance you can shed light on, I’d be very grateful.

In terms of growing balls and taking charge: I know this needs to happen but I’m worried about acting out emotionally against my interest.

HN, I need your advice, really badly

5 years ago, fresh out of college, I co-founded a company with someone I had hardly known. Dumb and naive, I know. In those 5 years, it has been one crisis after another, in large part due to my co-founder's (CEO) poor management, unethical behavior, and irresponsible spending. Time and time again she has manipulated and exploited her relationships (including ours) to her advantage. She has...
