So apparently Siri AI is not coming to my part of the world anytime soon because of EU law. With that, I see no reason at all to upgrade from my Ultra 1, as not much else has improved in any meaningful way in 3 years. Don't get me wrong, I love my Ultra 1. But I had hoped for more innovation in three generations of it.

Fun project. But if you just want the end result, you can buy one of these thermopaper toy cameras on Amazon for like $20.

You can buy phenol-free thermopaper if you are concerned
Low background steel is no longer necessary.

"...began to fall in 1963, when the Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty was enacted, and by 2008 it had decreased to only 0.005 mSv/yr above natural levels. This has made special low-background steel no longer necessary for most radiation-sensitive uses, as new steel now has a low enough radioactive signature."

I mean natural variation as in genes. Trauma often triggers mental health problems, but there usually needs to be genetic susceptibility as a foundation for it to happen.
Could it be that everything we call mental illness is just natural variation of people's psyche, at the ends of the bell curve?

Many of the mental illnesses are of course bad, but in an evolutionary perspective it makes sense that we have these variations in a population, to optimise adaptation.

A dumbphone does not have imessage, dictation, voice memos, timer, and other small things that makes life more convenient. That's why I prefer apple watch.
I also recommend getting an Apple Watch with cellular โ€“ that way you can still be reached for emergencies, while not having access to any social media or other distractions. Since I got an apple watch I find myself leaving the phone at home more often.
This is one of the greatest documentaries I have ever seen. The story is so intriguing, interesting and entertaining. Highly recommend.

Wow, didn't expect an answer straight from the horses mouth :) Thanks for making one of the best games of all time!

Perhaps my favorite game of all time. I liked all of the Lucasarts adventure games, but this one was special to me. Completed it 3 times since it came out. I think it is something about the characters, the story, the world and the ambience in it.

Wow, that was a great essay. It describes the process I've been using for the past 10 years to design a happy life. I had no words to describe it in a good way, but now I have.

One of my top 3 favorite games of all time. When it comes to story and characters, I cannot think of any better game. Recently finished it for the third time on Nintendo Switch.
Re:Writes and Write-Nots on Sunday October 27, 2024 @05:34AM (#41961098)
That writing is the only way to do deep, clear, thinking simply isn't true.

Stephen Hawking is the first example that comes to mind.

He developed a remarkable ability to perform complex calculations and visualize intricate mathematical concepts entirely in his mind. He once mentioned that his ALS diagnosis, which limited his physical abilities, led him to focus intensely on theoretical physics, as it required more intellectual than physical effort.

But sure, writing (and drawing) is a great tool to aid in deep thinking. So are AI tools.

Why did it get flagged? Is it not allowed to post links in comments? Or drive links specifically?
Re:Notes on Buttondown.com on Tuesday August 27, 2024 @03:38AM (#41365334)
For context, Buttondown is like Mailchimp but stripped down to only the essentials. It is simple, has everything I need, but not 1 million things I don't need. I love it.

Look at how the icons at the bottom have almost zero margin to the overly rounded sides.

Why is it so hard for anyone outside of Apple to make a visually appealing GUI? It just requires a little bit of taste and sense of aesthetics. I am baffled that this hasn't happened yet. The closest thing so far is probably ElementaryOS.

Re:Turn Your iPhone into a Dumb Phone on Sunday May 26, 2024 @08:56AM (#40481806)
If the problem is social media app addiction, I have found the best solution is to turn on screen time, whitelist your most important apps like messages, calendar etc. and then enable a passcode to access any other app. Ask a friend to set a pin code for you so you cannot cheat.

Another solution is to just use an apple watch with cellular as your primary phone. It has everything you need (spotify, imessage, etc.) but nothing that distracts you like youtube, tiktok etc.

Re:Psion 5mx Emulator on Wednesday May 22, 2024 @09:06AM (#40440462)
Dreamed of owning one when I was a kid, but couldn't afford it. Now I can finally try the software experience. And wow, it is delightful and simple!
Re:How and why to make a /now page on your site on Wednesday May 22, 2024 @08:24AM (#40440109)
For every Derek Sivers there are 9999 people who don't even care to update their website on a yearly basis.
Re:Figma and Adobe are abandoning our proposed merger on Monday December 18, 2023 @08:50AM (#38682429)
Perhaps you could aim to actually make money through your business? As in, selling a product at a profit? Taking dividends? I know it sounds wild, but that's how it went down in the olden days.
Re:Apple cuts off Beeper Mini's access on Friday December 08, 2023 @06:01PM (#38575899)
I used to think like this before I saw companies like Instagram and Tiktok thrive in the app store, which they absolutely cannot control. It is often worth a shot.
