News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

So apple conspired with Qualcomm to keep the market off wimax and on patents from Qualcomm, but no longer likes its deal on those patents? So they decide to disable new presumably patented features to begin to switch away from Qualcomm and Qualcomm counter sues for not continuing to help them screw the market?

It is like reading about a civil case launched over an inability to divide booty.

Ask HN: Widespread impersonation on Facebook ahead of votes?

I've spoken to a number of peopele who seem to be being impersonated before the Turkish referendum. Does Facebook provide data on the nature of such attacks (for example demographics of the accounts being spoofed) so members of the public can investigate the nature of the current attack landscape?

This is a bizarre hate filled reaction to suggestion that politics within Mexico will lead it to start a lawsuit in International Courts as a counter to current US politics. As the article points out, there is a chance that Mexico could win the case within the court and even if it did the US would never recognize that.

Still, a technical win could have international political affects. For example, the US has veto power in the UN and control of many international institutions such that they can't be used directly against the US, yet its ability to use international mechanisms to take actions against nations such as Mexico relies in part on its reputation for heeding international decisions.

Why is a piece on a likely upcoming political hack based on a legal hack flagged? If we don't accept this one, lets drop all the non-tech.

While the publicity pieces may be poorly stated, (in particular one should never use the word "individual" in any context) the desired teachable moment is based on buying data or access to a segment of at least 500 individuals based on factors like travel habits, income and demographics. (In some proposals that segment could be as high as 5-10K as I see mention of congressional aids and the like.)

That desire could be quite easy to achieve and quite hard to block without upsetting the intended market for ISP data since being able to buy affects on segments down to such granularity is exactly how the market works.

I think much of the stigma on job hopping comes from it really having a lot of advantages for a worker who is up for it (it gets progressively harder to deal with the first 6 months in a new job the longer you are stably employed and the more specialized you get.)

If I felt I had an external justification to explain a hop and I had doubts about my employer, I would look immediately for a job filtering for ones that I would actually want to keep for 3-4 years. If a new employer accepts you and you actually stay a few years, I would consider a future employer that had an issue with your resume rather odd. While sticking it out at an employer that you feel uncertain about can leave you in a worse place with the wrong timing.
