News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Needs a better title font for headlines.

Georgia Bold is not fit for the purpose, and there's no earthly reason to use it at 55px.

There are so many good serif fonts to choose from on Google Fonts. An embarrassment of riches.

I had some fun adding WordArt support to Slack's Word document renderer.

Turns out that WordArt is still feasible in modern-day Word, but it's really fiddly.

Everything you watch, documentary and narrative alike, attempts to shape your understanding of events through the director's lens.
You're not comparing like with like.

Today's protests seem aimed around GOTV, rather than opposing specific policies. It makes sense that they wouldn't have the same draw.

The main organising IG account for the protests is https://www.instagram.com/50501movement, with almost 900k followers.

It was an account with a few thousand followers. Nobody I know (in Brooklyn) follows the account.

I've seen more coverage of a brief 90-minute ban than I have of the protests themselves.

Trump and the Republicans are as unpopular as ever, but I don't think the No Kings protests are moving the needle right now.

This is also relevant: https://www.legis.state.pa.us/WU01/LI/LI/CT/HTM/75/00.001.00...

It classifies a delivery robot as a pedestrian, so she was impeding pedestrian traffic.

Re:Tesla Roadster on Friday October 16, 2026 @10:27PM (#50127303)
That’s not the same vehicle that did the tricks — the “Rocket” version has many downward-facing vents, and presumably a larger tank for pressurised gas and a much smaller battery capable of sustaining the suction but not much more.

And I think Not Invented Here has turned into Not Invented By Our Agents at many places.
Also wake me up when there’s a cloud version that works in an even vaguely similar way.

The Office advantage is a suite of apps and integrations with their cloud offerings. That’s their big moat against vibe-coded apps, because few vibe-coders want to maintain a SaaS service for Office files and even fewer CIOs want to commit their company to use that service when Microsoft exists and is proven to work.

Can these tools withstand Microsoft’s lawyers?
The model that made this mistake was Haiku 4.5.

As I understand it, bug bounty awards are a rough proxy for "would nation-state actors be able to exploit this for operational purposes without getting caught".

Zero-click iPhone exploits that affect the current OS and also previous ones are worth hundreds of thousands.

You’re conflating private helicopter rides (which are annoying and frequent) with police ones, which are generally pretty necessary. I’ve only seen them out in my neighborhood after serious crimes where a suspect hasn’t been caught.

Very biased, but at Cambridge we were taught (by Maurice Wilkes among others) that the EDSAC was the first “useful” computer.
> Rust is the best general-purpose language for the new world of AI-driven development.

Funny, the Python guys say Python is the best general-purpose language for AI and the Go guys say Go is the best general-purpose language for AI etc etc

> Of course, the more you know about a subject, the less convincing the AI's responses are.

This is said all the time by AI skeptics and I think it's right in some areas and massively wrong in others.

I know (or at least assume I know) a lot about certain coding domains where frontier models also show convincing ability. And we know that frontier LLMs really do excel in some areas of mathematics (i.e. when an inexpert human was able to prompt the models to derive a closer bound on the Riemann Hypothesis).

OTOH I know those same models struggle to do things I'm not an expert in (e.g. writing English in a captivating way) because I read their output and have taste.

Re:Hacking OpenAI on Friday September 18, 2026 @12:03AM (#49750059)
My guess is that OpenAI has done a lot more to prevent exfil of their model weights than the codebase of their main web app and client.

Did you read it or, if English isn’t your first language, have someone who writes English well read it? I’ve had a lot of useful feedback on stuff I’ve written that way.

I'm so tired of AI writing

Other sources say it was a cargo plane, so unclear.
I assume he was taken to a US airbase and flown from there.

Americans can recall diplomats back to their home country at any time. He was recalled somewhat more hastily than most.

I imagine they said something to the effect of “you will be deported and stand trial in the US; the only question is whether you’re prosecuted in the UK as well”. I imagine that, plus promises to keep his name out of the media, were convincing.

I don’t think that’s accurate or helpful.

I think he found himself in a situation that he could not cope with in a rational manner. I suspect that many people, myself included, would struggle in similar situations.

Occasionally a person can find themselves in a place where quitting is the best option for everyone involved, but the person at the centre is so dug in that they don’t even consider the possibility.

Great news for a language whose last stable release was 20 years ago
