Re:Challenges in the diagnosis of magnesium status on Monday June 28, 2021 @04:45AM (#27659442)
There are a handful of factors involved, so I will just share the conclusion, which also admits that "more research is needed":

"We looked for _any_ way to spin the nutrition argument in favor of grass-fed meat, but the actual data are fairly easy to verify. If we whitewashed this for a more palatable narrative, the obvious flaw in that position might cast doubt on everything else we are suggesting.

We realize that this is a remarkably unpopular position. But, [...], an ethical clinician would never tell a patient that they should eat only organic vegetables or no vegetables at all. We have the same position on meat. For those who simply don’t have access to grass-fed beef, we still feel red meat in general is an important, nutrient-dense food for humans."

Grass fed is not necessary. Please check out "Sacred Cow" (https://www.sacredcow.info/book) for the latest research.

I (and many others) agree with your recommendation on sodium.

Thanks for sharing - this would be easier to read if you didn't make it sound like everyone should be doing this all of the time. Yes, a carnivore diet will probably bring lots of benefits to many people. At the same time I want to remain open to other lifestyles and tweaks which maybe don't fit into just one category. I want to eat out of choice, not out of habit.

My guess is they want to avoid any signals of dominance. It's not that they cannot afford to look stylish.

The question was probably "how modern or innovative do we want to look?" and the answer something like: "let's better lay low for the next years with all the public scrutiny and the risk of a breakup".

Microsoft has employed the same strategy for years, IMO.

Re:The computers are getting better at writing on Tuesday May 04, 2021 @02:20AM (#27034577)
I am wondering if we call some writers great because of what they did not, could not or cannot express (anymore). By their limited and graspable existence they serve as targets for our projections, whereas an AI is less attractive for that purpose, at least in my view.

I'd rather think about the authors of AIs, their assumptions and their worldview.

Re:Ask HN: How to build empathy? on Saturday March 20, 2021 @01:14PM (#26524493)
Well, thank you for you honesty and openness. (How does that sound to ears that are averse to classical NVC?)

Kelly Bryson ("Don't be nice, be real") mentioned how he experienced Marshall Rosenberg being quite torn about teaching people to be overly empathic as a habit. Kelly recommends radical honesty as an antidote to that.

Re:Ask HN: How to build empathy? on Saturday March 20, 2021 @12:01PM (#26524003)
First, make sure this is really what you want and need.

It helps to be a Jungian personality type that has a strong focus on the feeling cognitive function, i.e. Fi/Fe. If that's not you, then empathy/sympathy will probably not come natural to you.

Also, I have personally found that a very refined culture of giving and receiving empathy is found in the Non-Violent Communication (NVC) "universe" created by Marshall Rosenberg.

Yes. For an even more extreme experience try following @AuschwitzMuseum. See how it affects your daily life and priorities. Does it make you cry sometimes? Lucky you. There is a very beautiful and important need called mourning. Enjoy.
Re:Kosmonaut: web browser from scratch in Rust on Saturday August 15, 2020 @02:12PM (#24170955)
I had a similar thought: Why not build a browser-generator? Some nice presets and checkboxes for options and a single shiny "Build" button. This can't be too difficult, am I right? It would give users the explicit responsibility for broken pieces and also some nice performance gains.

I think this is a beautiful role playing game indeed :) Thanks for sharing, I am inspired!
Re:Surgery free, 3D printed implants on Saturday June 03, 2017 @01:49AM (#14475191)
Seeing this on HN is a little confusing because I will hopefully be soon getting an implant by Dr. Pirker. I was in has practice a couple of weeks ago and we had a long, for me very inspiring talk not only on my implant but on the worrying state of medicine and society in general. And yeah, from what I understood, he is looking for investors for a more automated manufacturing process for the currently hand-crafted implants.
Let me guess: a file converter or a PDF utility?

Thank you for your choice of strong words. Sometimes I need a wake-up call like that in order to grasp what mess we are currently in.
Re:A Guide to “Getting” Rumi on Thursday March 02, 2017 @05:34PM (#13778926)
What an honor to receive this present. I am really touched. Thank you from my heart.
Re:A Guide to “Getting” Rumi on Thursday March 02, 2017 @02:44PM (#13777514)
Thanks for your sharing your story. I learned of Rumi through my exposure to non-violent communication (M. Rosenberg) and have already experienced many times a mystic, transcendent moment of empathic connection to others and myself. I find it is something that can be practiced, something you can have at any moment of your life. Rumi's poems come very close to this beauty I have experienced.
Re:Why Kakoune – The quest for a better code editor on Tuesday December 13, 2016 @12:44PM (#13168745)
I started a similar project in 2013, sadly never delivered a working prototype. Its name was going to be "Kuji Editor", basically an editor in visual mode by default and with context-verb grammar instead of vi's verb-object grammar. I knew this would represent a big improvement over other editors because of a more intuitive and modern approach leading to a better workflow.

I started with building the UI in PyGame but never got further than that...

(I am really disappointed I didn't spend more time on this now I see the attention Kakoune gets. I would have loved the feeling of contributing something truly innovative... well...). Congrats to Maxime!

What about PySide or PyQt?
Re:Atom – Git commit messages on Monday January 12, 2015 @12:25PM (#8875073)
"/email route: Email integration added" is my favorite way. Same thing with code naming, I always put the widest context first, then narrow down. With this habit I spend a lot less time thinking about names.
Re:PixelPals – Collaborative pixel art canvas on Wednesday December 24, 2014 @12:22AM (#8791676)
Awesome! I already have a couple of ideas on how to use this as a teambuilding tool. Thanks for open-sourcing it!

For Android, try Lux Auto Brightness. I have been using it for years both on my phone and tablets.

The school system is not moronic at all. It is _designed_ to preserve our society's status quo by conditioning students into gradually losing their "naive" ideals and any independent thought (check out Disciplined Minds by Jeff Schmidt). As you have already weakly implied, the kind of teaching you envision will only happen in alternative organizations.
