Nice suggestions. I would also add: disable javascript

Yes, if you're young and have good reflexes, you can break your wrists. If you're old with slower reflexes, you can't get your arms out in time so you break your hip instead.

Re:The Ancient Persian way to keep cool on Wednesday August 11, 2021 @05:39AM (#28139947)
I would have thought these structures move air up and out by the [chimney effect](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stack_effect) instead of funneling air down as the article describes. I love my old house's double hung windows which also use the chimney effect for passive cooling by opening both sashes halfway. Cooler air comes in the bottom, and warm air goes out the top.
Re:Did Windows 10 slow down with each feature update? on Monday June 21, 2021 @11:22PM (#27587594)
For the record, it was Volkswagen that cheated the emissions test, not Volvo
Re:I wrote a linker everyone can understand on Wednesday June 09, 2021 @02:15PM (#27451200)
I always get tripped up with ld failing unless the object files are listed in the right order on the command line. I was curious if this simple linker would overcome this historic limitation, and was happy to see it does.

> Another downside is that you do have to arrange the object files in the command line in an order that makes sense for this linear approach. The first object file must be the entry point of the program. Different arrangements of object files may work for linking your executable but will produce an organizationally different executable. You may or may not care about this.

Re:Amazon workers vote against unionizing in Alabama on Friday April 09, 2021 @02:28PM (#26754162)
I'm an Amazon warehouse worker in North Carolina. As far as health insurance, I pay 100% of the first $1500, then 10% of the next $15,000 (so $3000 total), then 0% of anything over $16,500. I wouldn't call that astonishing, but it is the minimum $0 monthly premium plan. Also, I'm generally happy at work. I basically feel well paid and well treated.
Re:More than 73% of American adults are overweight or obese on Tuesday December 29, 2020 @04:17PM (#25575148)
For the last ten years, my spouse and I always split an entree when we eat out. We order one entree and ask for an extra plate. The portions are perfect, and eating out is much more affordable.
Re:Why online voting is harder than online banking on Saturday September 12, 2020 @02:39PM (#24454426)
For example, a new election was ordered for the 2018 NC 9th district congressional race.

Exactly this! Voting by mail just means my grandfather gets two votes and my grandmother gets zero.
Re:How do you prove that Earth is older than 10,000 years? on Thursday November 23, 2017 @04:37PM (#15767950)
The gender of the name "Sabine" is not obvious to me. I wish English had a good gender neutral pronoun. "He or she" is too formal sounding. "They/their/them" is too informal sounding.
Re:Show HN: Fruits and vegetables in season in your zip code on Monday November 20, 2017 @10:02AM (#15740309)
How can I use this to help me eat locally? I put in my zip code for Raleigh, NC (27601), and it gives me a result of: Cabbage in Pasquotank County, but there is no contact information. How can I get some of that cabbage?

Exactly, advertisers are the customer, you are the product
I went there to apply for a job, and at first I thought the design was a joke, but apparently it is serious.
Re:Uber Faces FBI Probe Over Program Targeting Rival Lyft on Friday September 08, 2017 @01:16PM (#15202095)
If Papa John's calls in thousands of fake pizza delivery orders to Donimos, are they doing research on response times and how many drivers their competitor has, or are they committing a crime?
Re:Show HN: GreenPiThumb – A Raspberry Pi Gardening Bot on Tuesday June 27, 2017 @09:05AM (#14644963)
When MOSFETs get hot, that usually means the gate voltage is too low. It looks like your driving the MOSFET gate through a resistor voltage divider. It would be better to drive the gate straight from the PI's GPIO pin. Also a flyback protection diode would be a very good idea.
Re:A therapy chatbot for depression on Wednesday June 07, 2017 @07:30PM (#14510703)
When I read the headline, my first impression was great! But digging deeper:

  - The name woebot - is this a joke?
  - The company is made up of 5 cs engeneers, only 1 clinical psycologist, and 1 ceo/doctor (of what?)
  - It's a for-profit paid business, not a make-the-world-better university project
Yuck. Just no.
Re:How I made 1000 commits to GitHub in one day on Friday January 06, 2017 @12:36PM (#13338266)
Could the person who submitted a pull request with 1000 commits please squash your commits (jk :D).
This is a very cool idea, but the search terms were too simplistic. For example the word "wrong" in "If the commit was to the wrong branch..." should probably not be interpreted as an angry comment.
Re:An experiment in fighting racism on Twitter on Saturday November 19, 2016 @11:17AM (#12994094)
The sample size was 242. If you click the link to the paper, then click the supplementary material link, you get [this pdf](https://static-content.springer.com/esm/art%3A10.1007%2Fs111...) that explains the methods.
Re:You Are Still Crying Wolf on Thursday November 17, 2016 @01:54PM (#12980246)
I've never heard of this guy or this website before, but I just spent an hour getting slammed with more truth and reason than I've read in the last two years combined. Mind blown!
Re:Cylance Discloses Voting Machine Vulnerability on Sunday November 06, 2016 @12:40AM (#12883544)
Yes. With paper ballots, cheating is at least detectable because there is literally a paper trail. With touch screens, maybe the results are correct, maybe the machine miscounted. There is no way to really know.
Re:The Candy Hierarchy for 2016 on Tuesday November 01, 2016 @11:59AM (#12846990)
Just what I'd expect: Kit Kat, Snickers, Twix, and Reese's Cups are at the top of the list.
The pokeman locations where crowd-sourced, and unsurprisingly the crowd was skewed white.
Re:Einstein: The Negro Question (1946) on Saturday July 09, 2016 @01:46PM (#12062458)
People who think philandering is a flaw are not as enlightened as Einstein was.
