Re:Vegemite is not a human right on Monday October 26, 2026 @11:34PM (#50254439)
The part that puzzles me is where he states that he'd been let out on parole (where presumably he could access Vegemite) but didn't like it and chose to go back into custody: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-10-26/vic-vegemite-prison-c...
I'm surprised that so far nobody has mentioned using one for a password store. The 'pass' utility has git integration and encourages you to have a git remote somewhere to host a duplicate of your encrypted store. For over a decade I have had a cloud VM costing a few cents a month to do this.
Re:Ask HN: What're You Reading? on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @08:24PM (#49916213)
It is a good read. I 'borrowed' it from the Internet Archive and read it. The reconstruction of what happened from the various different and conflicting sources is interesting, as is the 21st Century expedition to seek the wreck.
Re:The Largest Electric Aircraft Just Flew [video] on Friday September 04, 2026 @12:42AM (#49560605)
Canberra - Sydney is one of the busiest routes in Australia with Dash 8 and ATR turboprops on high rotation every day. I could see a small electric aircraft working pretty well there, modulo charging times.
Re:The safest job from AI may be writing on Tuesday September 01, 2026 @12:39AM (#49518021)
Arriving ten hours after this was posted, I am a tad surprised that nobody seems to have popped up to suggest that the article ought to have been titled, "The job safest from AI may be writing".
Re:Jira and Confluence Are Both Down on Thursday August 27, 2026 @12:43AM (#49459822)
Ten minutes ago from Atlassian: "Our teams have identified a possible fix for the issues impacting Jira Cloud, Jira Service Management and Confluence. This is now being rolled out to impacted regions and we will update within one hour, or sooner if further information is available."
A lot of swans live here in the Australian Capital Territory. They seem to like our lakes. I have only ever seen black ones.
Re:Craig Mod built his own Good Reads on Tuesday July 07, 2026 @12:37AM (#48813714)
From that link... if only Craig knew the difference between 'tenet' and 'tenant'.
Yes, in Australia we have compulsory voting, but no national holiday. Polling day is on a Saturday, so most people can get to their local polling booth pretty easily. And since COVID, pre-poll postal votes have become even more popular and the Australian Electoral Commission has a really secure and streamlined process for these, proved over decades.
I think that the EV6 User Interface is pretty spot on, including things like side mirrors complemented by cameras that activate when you indicate, a nice HUD and real buttons for most things. If ONLY I didn't have to manually deactivate lane keep warning alerts EVERY time I start the car, it'd be nudging perfect.
I saw the book mentioned at random here mid way through last year and ordered it for my Kindle. To my surprise, it wouldn't be available until the end of the year. I found that puzzling because some people here seemed to be saying that they had read it. Now reading this set of comments today it seems that I was to be buying a revised version and the text had been 'in the wild' for some time. Anyway, it duly arrived, I read it and thought it an okay read. It wasn't until reading this page today that I became aware of the existence of a thing called SCP and any of what that entails in relation to the book.
Is there a place somewhere in the world where Hydrogen powered passenger vehicles are a success? I know that the one Hydrogen filling station here in Australia's Capital City has shut down after opening with great fanfare a few years ago. And the approximately 20 or so Hydrogen cars it supplied are no longer being used.
Re:You Just Reveived on Thursday March 05, 2026 @11:11PM (#47270779)
Actual voice phone calls are so rare for me these days that I'll often go months without making or receiving one, though my mobile phone is always with me. And I recently realised that the house I live in, which was built in 2020, has no provision for any sort of landline telephone at all.
Re:Ghostty – Terminal Emulator on Tuesday March 03, 2026 @10:45PM (#47242792)
Installed the snap on Ubuntu 24.04 and when I used it to look at /etc/sudoers.d/README, it emitted:

WARNING: terminal is not fully functional

Press RETURN to continue

...which I thought a little odd.

I'm having trouble getting my head around an interview with Teller. We all know he doesn't speak. :)
Re:20 years of Git on Monday April 07, 2025 @11:32PM (#43618124)
I think that was the first time I ever saw Tridge deliver a conference presentation and it was to a packed lecture theatre at the ANU. He described how he 'hacked' BitKeeper by connecting to the server via telnet and using the sophisticated hacker tools at his disposal to convince Bitkeeper to divulge its secrets, he typed:

help

The room erupted with applause and laughter.

Re:Take this on-call rotation and shove it on Thursday March 27, 2025 @06:25PM (#43498920)
This article gave me unpleasant flashbacks to the first half of 2023. I resigned from planet.com in mid 2023 due to the stress caused by being on-call every second week. It took me six months to get my head into a healthy state again. Now I have a much better job, better paid and no possibility of on-call, ever.

When the Old Man shaking his fist at the Cloud is a former tech lead of OpenStack's Compute project Nova, I think it's worth paying attention. His fist started shaking 4 years ago, but the most recent commit on GitHub was 4 hours ago. The fist is still shaking.

You won't be able to call Jenny with a typo'd number like that.

Re:Congress is set to ban most surprise medical bills on Monday December 21, 2020 @06:32PM (#25501044)
I also had an emergency hospital visit a few months ago. Multiple X-Rays, a CT scan, two surgeries and innumerable drugs. I don't have health insurance. Cost to me? Zero.

But then I live in Australia.

Re:ZipGrow: Vertical farming/urban agriculture system on Sunday March 29, 2020 @07:30PM (#22723719)
Typo for 'solar'?
Darn. The tiny VM I have hosting my Quassel server for always-on IRC will go from approx 20 Australian cents per month to approx $4.30 per month. That's a rather large jump.
