Ask HN: How are you making JavaScript websites (not webapps)

There are plenty of great frameworks for single-pages applications (Angular, Ember, Backbone, ...) that each offer their own interpretations on how to develop. Take Ember for example (only because I am familiar with it). It provides you with all of the scaffolding and plumbing you need for most SPA requirements. It is opinionated on how to structure and build your application and offers tools...

Re:How do you go about getting contracts for remote work? on Tuesday August 09, 2016 @01:38PM (#12256305)
If you work with a particular technology than start a blog and start getting your name out there on things like Stackoverflow and Github. Once you start engaging in the community you will be surprised how many inquiries you will get. Once you have a couple of jobs, try use those relationships to get more jobs. Referrals and word of mouth are invaluable.

Re:Ask HN: Do you still play with VR actively? on Wednesday August 03, 2016 @03:45PM (#12220906)
Most of the replies here focus on the gaming experience. What about for entertainment (don't mean porn)? I'm unfamiliar with the Vive/Oculus ecosystem but is there not a huge opportunity for live content (concerts, sports etc.)? I'm also a developer and can see a huge amount of potential for all sorts of content-based applications.

Ask HN: Is anyone using the new online bank Number26?

I signed up and verified for a current account with Number26 today. They're a EU (in 6 countries) online-only, mobile-first bank:- https://number26.euI have to say I'm very impressed with this. I was able to sign up within 10 minutes and have an IBAN. This involved using the app to start a video call with a representative and take a picture of my password as well as verifying some information....

I use Postbox but I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has used both Postbox and Airmail to see if they prefer one over the other?
Re:My WebSummit 2015 experience recap as an Alpha Track startup on Saturday November 07, 2015 @08:06AM (#10524673)
Regarding your P.S., there has been a huge controversy here in Ireland regarding the move to Lisbon since it was announced. Paddy Cosgrave has blamed everyone under the sun for the problems that apparently require the event to be moved, but at the end of the day, the Portuguese government offered them money while the Irish government refused to cater to their demands so I would have no doubt that the only thing that matters to those involved is the cash. The whole debacle has been pretty embarrassing for Paddy Cosgrave and the WebSummit.

Re:A New Face for Pebble on Wednesday September 23, 2015 @07:54PM (#10269061)
I really wanted to pick up a Pebble Time when they publicly launched. I was so disappointed to see that they were charging €250 (~$280) in Europe while only $199 in The States. Now, the Steel and the Round are €300. It's just too much money. Even considering VAT, the difference in price between EU & US seems excessive
Re:Ask HN: What is the worst you poured over your keyboard? on Friday September 11, 2015 @09:45AM (#10203593)
Gin. Like people, laptops also behave stupidly after drinking gin.
Re:Raspberry Pi touch display on Tuesday September 08, 2015 @01:29PM (#10187055)
Promotional quiz games where there are two buttons wired up to the RPi which is serving a web-based game, tweet-powered devices (RPi listens to the Twitter stream and activates a power switch when a certain hashtag is used) etc.
Re:Raspberry Pi touch display on Tuesday September 08, 2015 @09:36AM (#10185540)
I use RPis for bespoke installations for clients. One of the problems has been offering an easy way to make adjustments to the apps the RPi is running without a keyboard/mouse/monitor setup or having to SSH in. This is a great way to offer the ability to make changes. Looking forward to trying one out
Re:Ask HN: Best Markdown editor for OS X? on Wednesday June 10, 2015 @05:30PM (#9695603)
MacDown. Stay away from Mou. Very sketchy author. He did an Indiegogo campaign after essentially abandoning the project and failing to sell it and hasn't updated in 6 months after taking $25,000 from backers[0][1][2][3] He also raised the price of the product because "There're too many pre-orders. We decide to raise price to reduce the sale."[4]

How does insurance work with this? What if my driver is robbed, gets in a crash or decides to pocket my stuff? Do Uber insure the contents or the retailer (or neither)?
Re:Does your Macbook adapter plug wire break? on Friday March 27, 2015 @02:11PM (#9278045)
Yes, this seems to happen to all of my chargers. So far I've had to fix 4 (all on the magsafe end).

I used self amalgamating tape[0] on two of them and it's worked really well (albeit a slightly ugly fix). On the other two I used Sugru[1] which is prettier but not as flexible.

Ask HN: Developing on VPS with Vim and tmux?

I'm a freelance web developer. I primarily develop locally using Sublime Text 3 but I'd love to change this and be able to develop entirely remotely on a VPS. I've tried a couple of times to get into using Vim but I've found it quite difficult. How many others are developing like this and what tools and resources can you recommend?

Ask HN: Could you share your general purpose development contracts?

I'm a freelance web developer and I'm planning on putting together a general purpose web development contract for future projects. I was hoping to get a feeling of what I should be covering in the contract. I'd love to make a easy to read, non-legalese contract that covers the basics (payment, ownership, expectations, work hours etc.) which would give a client an introduction to my terms and be...

Ask HN: Help becoming a one-man 'micropreneur'

I'm a recovering freelancer that recently picked up "Start Small, Stay Small"* from a thread here on HN and it really resonated with me.I have been freelancing very informally over the last few years but I find myself totally unable to progress. My contract work has fizzled out and I haven't been able to get the energy or passion together to replace it with more. I've gone through numerous...
