microDude

I work in semiconductor manufacturing, it's a very common model. I have been in about eight fabs around the world that use it quite successfully.
I think about this all the time:

Would it be possible to change the anti-trust laws so that companies can not merge or be acquired if the sum of their assets and revenue exceeds a set dollar figure adjusted for inflation?

If A(assets + revenue) + B(assets + revenue) >= $, then not allowed to merge.

This will promote competition from upstarts and increase the efficiency of these companies by preventing them from gobbling up every new market.

To my surprise there is a museum right down the street from my house (Beaverton/Portland, OR USA). That I must have just been missing. Thanks for posting!

One thing I never understood was why server1.mycompany.com (origin) cannot make a GET request to server2.mycompany.com?
My former employer threatened me in Oregon (started as an intern, software engineer). I had to pay a lawyer $4000 to help avoid going to court. Basically they were trying to scare other employees from leaving.
Any Friends of DeSoto here?
My wife's experience:

PI: "You put your kid in front of the TV for 2 hours a day to get stuff done? That's terrible parenting."

PI: "You will be late 1 day for a meaningless group presentation to your own lab, because your child is sick and can't go to daycare? Get your priorities straight."

Can not recommend the book enough. I read the entire book in PDF format first. Then went out and bought a hard copy.

I work at ADI now, which is kind of weird to see the OP's link.

Re:Too Many Workers Are Trapped by Non-Competes on Sunday January 13, 2019 @04:35PM (#18898848)
Yes. My old boss was threatening to take me to court. I could not afford the fees, but I wanted a lawyer to review any paperwork that I was being forced to sign.

After my last day I hired a lawyer to review the document. He was able to strike the part about me knowingly taking IP with me. He then advised me to sign the document, since court costs would be much more expensive.

Yes, Oregon's wage limit (4 person family) and 18 time limit help...

This coming from someone who's former employer tried to enforce a NDA on me.

Re:Too Many Workers Are Trapped by Non-Competes on Sunday January 13, 2019 @01:06AM (#18895371)
Yes. I told my boss, when he asked. They would find out, since I left to their customer.
Re:Too Many Workers Are Trapped by Non-Competes on Saturday January 12, 2019 @09:27PM (#18894660)
I lived in Oregon when I signed a non-compete as a software engineer intern. I did not know what I was signing and thought it just applied to stealing trade secrets or source code.

So, I ended up working for that company after grad school, for about 6 years. Then,,, a customer of that company (one that I worked with, and grew a favorable reputation with) offered me a nice package (2x salary offering, plus a RSU bonus account worth about $125k). I was not making that much at the original company for the market (about $72k). So, I jumped....

I gave my previous employer about 6 weeks notice, and documented all of my work, and did my best to transfer project ownership to other employees. I really liked all of the engineers I worked with and was attempting to stay in good graces.

Then, on my last day of work my boss calls me on the phone and screams at me for leaving the company. He flashes the NDA on the computer screen and highlights the non-competitor part of the agreement. Then, he has the gall to demand that I sign another agreement, saying that I am knowingly taking trade secrets with me..... Bull-shit, I'm not signing that I say. Then, I had to hire a lawyer and burn through the sign on bonus and relocation at the new company to move on. I ended up signing a version of that agreement, since my lawyer said we would have to take them to court to get out of it, and that I will be out after 18 months anyways. The truth of the matter is, I could have fought it and may have won, since I made less then the threshold, but I just wanted to move on....

Now, I am really happy. I am finally making a living (comfortable) wage for me and my family, and will be taking a family vacation for the first time in years.

Re:Chip wars: China, America and silicon supremacy on Friday November 30, 2018 @05:32PM (#18573356)
Nope. When you de-package the chip you damage it, especially on small features. They have access to the die bank, which means they have perfect die. Probably, with test pads still exposed. A microscope, etcher, etester, and patience is all you need to reverse engineer.
I'd pay for it, if it was embedded in car paint.
Re:Tell Your Co-Workers How Much Money You Make on Monday September 03, 2018 @02:44AM (#17900848)
Companies want to have a bilateral agreement with each employee and have all the information.

The best strategy is to use competitor salary information, taken from the likes of Glassdoor or similar.

Re:The New Yorker has formed a union on Wednesday June 06, 2018 @02:00PM (#17249433)
As someone who lives in Oregon. Eastern Oregon is incredibly cheap, only around select Western areas (Portland, Willamette Valley, Bend) are the costs much higher.
Re:Version 6 of Angular Now Available on Saturday May 05, 2018 @02:20PM (#17003021)
Amen. Using your own vanilla JS architecture gives you flexibility and future proof. It is easier to hire new devs and train them. A little documentation and a template project go a long way to getting uniform projects.

Re:God Save Austin on Friday April 06, 2018 @01:26PM (#16775165)
My old boss moved to Bend, OR, but was surprised when I did not follow him. He did not give me a pay raise to afford the $400k entry house for my family. I could have lived out in the sticks, but wanted to be able to walk to downtown, like I do now.
Re:We Only Have Hours Left to Stop the NSA Expansion Bill on Wednesday December 20, 2017 @01:49PM (#15972527)
I live in Oregon, where I am pretty sure my representatives will oppose this bill (as they have a history of doing so). What I really want to do is voice my opinion to my old state of Pennsylvania, where I am less confident.

As more people move to where the jobs are at, the country will become more blue/red divided.

MoneyDance is good and runs on your home Linux machine. You need to pay for it ($50 I think. Not open source, but paying a company typically means that they are getting the revenue from you not by selling your data in some back channel). I use VNC from my phone to connect to home base.
This was very helpful information, thank you. I believe the new employer wants me because I have done a "lot" of phone support for them the past 2 years and have kept their plant running at the "wee hours" of the night on weekends. I have also done software extension work for them. The plant only has one automation engineer currently, and he really needs help managing everything.

Basically, if I can not do automation work for them they might not be interested in me.

I am just an engineer. My final title was "automation engineer". Not in upper management. Thank you.
5 years term. It also bars me from talking to customers that have expired 2 years before the end of my employment.

Ask HN: Is a Non-Compete Contract enforceable for a non-competitor?

Hello, back in 2011 I signed a Non-Compete agreement with my employer (I was a doe eyed fresh graduate engineer). I was given the contract on my first day at the job and had little choice but to sign it.Now, I have accepted a job at a customer of my old employer. The new employer does not compete or sell/offer services similar to the old employer (I do factory automation software, the new...

Please don't ride E-Bikes in a Public Land (BLM, USFS, etc.) Mountain Bike Area.

My Mountain Bike club has worked for years to get access to these areas. Other land users (hikers and equestrian riders) are not very keen for MtB use. The worry is that E-Bikes will be used as a excuse (Motorized vehicle) to kick out all MtB use in the areas.

I am totally ok with road use and on private property though.

e) You will no longer be able to call yourself a "full stack" developer that can work in any field. Employers will only look for developers that are good at programming, and a expert in a niche field. For example, bioinformatics.
Re:Why Is Python Growing So Quickly? on Thursday September 14, 2017 @12:57PM (#15249946)
Really simple answer...

University undergraduate classes in a variety of courses use it as their default language, so it is a bunch of students trying to complete their homework assignments.
