Because English is the only language of merit? And doing everything in only English isn't snobbish?
Re:Is Germany once again the sick man of Europe? on Friday August 18, 2023 @05:51AM (#37173401)
All true. But they don't need people showing up just to gripe and complain.
'cause it's fun.
I'm gonna go out on a wild limb here and say that masks probably had something to do with it (among other things).
Re:France to Build Six New Nuclear Reactors on Friday February 11, 2022 @05:21AM (#30299627)
I live in Switzerland too. That hydro comes from water pumped uphill at night by cheap French nuclear power. (/s. Mostly.)
Or the infinite number of drum & bass ragga tracks to use this bassline e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6t7x1FASMJ4
Re:It takes a PhD to develop that on Monday October 04, 2021 @05:30AM (#28744738)
Agreed. As someone who spends most of their time on performance related issues, it's important to keep in mind that sometimes performance issues are strongly tied to the architecture of the program. If the data structures aren't set up to take advantage of the hardware, you'll never get the results you're hoping for. And setting up data structures is often something that needs to be thought about at the beginning of the project.
Glad to see that we're finally catching up to 1773. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_watch
Re:“Great resignation” wave coming for companies on Monday June 14, 2021 @11:33AM (#27503833)
In Switzerland at least, health insurance is definitely _not_ contingent on employment. It is specifically a private issue.

Ask your partner what they want. Then do that. Your opinion on this matter is not particularly important ;)

High quality watches were coming out of Switzerland long before it was a tax haven. [0]

Re:Why Highly Intelligent People Are More Likely to Be Miserable on Wednesday February 05, 2020 @07:13AM (#22246067)
I find that being intelligent simply means that one makes more convoluted problems for oneself ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It's not really a win (with respect to being happy).
Re:Late 40s, no job offers. Could a PhD help? on Thursday November 28, 2019 @10:43AM (#21658063)
IMO unless you have a very specific field in mind which you believe will be extremely interested in your skills 3-5 years from now, I'd say "Hell no."

I say this as someone with a PhD (and as someone who's field quickly became irrelevant only a few years after graduation).

Then the USA should also enact obligatory military service. So that everyone would know how to use those guns. And see them as a grave responsibility, not just a right.
Re:Wolfram Rule 30 Prizes on Tuesday October 01, 2019 @04:20PM (#21130135)
If I were still in grad school, I would get lost in this. Alas, days gone by...
Re:Birds Are Vanishing from North America on Thursday September 19, 2019 @04:56PM (#21020684)
If anyone is interested in a fanciful take on reducing the world's population in order to save it, I can happily recommend Channel 4's two-season Utopia series [0]

Yeah, I'm trying to avoid 1939.
It sounds nice. But isn't this literally the kind of top-down centrally-planned economy that was implemented in many post-WW2 socialist states? [0]

The French Foreign Legion is still an option!
Does anyone have any experience with Threema? https://threema.ch/en
Self explanatory, IMO. /s

The same team did a squishy Morty head for Adultswim. http://www.adultswim.com/etcetera/elastic-man/. Chris Heinrichs (Dolphin Club Audio formerly of Enzien Audio, https://dolphinclub.website/) does the procedural audio models.
I feel for you, man. Best of luck! But you may be on the wrong side of history :)
Re:Concepts: The Next Major Change Coming to C++ on Friday September 28, 2018 @07:36PM (#18097856)
I feel like the way C++ is going, it's getting around to doing what Java did better ten years ago. This article seems to be describing a (still verbose) C++ version of a Java Interface. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I've spent the last four years learning the art and craft of LED art. I suppose I wouldn't change the way that I do things, but if I were starting out again I'd definitely use this. I can very much appreciate all of the work that this system takes off of my hands. The auto-recompile low-iteration-time is key. Very impressive!
I'm surprised at that amount of surprise in this thread. I have a good friend who is (was) in sales. He had to get out once he realised that he'd turned into a full-blown alcoholic and that he'd wouldn't be able to do business if he at all tried to slow down. Heavily dependent on the industry though.
