Am I the only one scratching my head about how Zed will eventually monetize their business to satisfy the investors behind their $12M investment?
What’s the risk exposure for startups whose engineers are using Copilot to write proprietary private code?

A thousand times this.

Not related to guitars, but I do a lot of off-roading and the multimedia system is only controlled by the big screen. In bumpy roads it's a trial and error operation to skip a song. Give me my previous/next physical buttons back.

Re:Moving from Hey to Fastmail on Friday June 25, 2021 @12:24PM (#27632840)
Every time I read this type of post I get amazed at how primitive my use of personal email is.

No folders, no tags, no rules. Just inbox and read status.

Ditched gmail for iCloud a few years ago. Simple, cheap, well integrated.

Re:Why I'm open sourcing the financial side of my business on Tuesday February 11, 2020 @12:07PM (#22300087)
Before reading this post I had no idea of who Mattias was and had never heard of Oh Dear! or DNS Spy. I'm happy to read about other people's finance during my lunch break, but I question what are the motivations other than cheap marketing reach.
Look from the other side as well. I doubt such transaction moves the needle enough in Oracle’s performance to mean anything to the pension fund’s investment. However, it’s almost an asset for the fund to be able to pursuit such lawsuit.
Re:Parents who digitize their babies’ lives on Sunday March 03, 2019 @06:22AM (#19293929)
Great point and I’m afraid you are correct.

I’ve been trying to evangelize non tech friends/family about privacy in general and the reactions are not great.

Congrats. I really like the concept.

Don’t have much time to test now but do you track response/action on feedback in any way?

Re:W3schools.dev Redirects to Mozilla Developer Network on Friday March 01, 2019 @09:49AM (#19281083)
I wish too. But looks like w3schools display google ads while MDN does not.

Makes me wonder if that’s built into the ranking algo some how.

Re:AdNauseam – clicking ads so you don't have to on Friday March 01, 2019 @09:36AM (#19280941)
Yeah, unless the extension is used by a significant portion of the users, this a probably pushing numbers up a bit for networks.
Re:Reconstructing Twitter's Firehose on Wednesday February 27, 2019 @10:40PM (#19268816)
I don’t think it reflects badly on Twitter, it was simply a remark on the state of their blacklisting at the time. I’m sure they could’ve done a lot better if they chose to. Sorry I didn’t expressed myself better.
Re:Reconstructing Twitter's Firehose on Wednesday February 27, 2019 @08:39PM (#19268369)
No. Different strategy.
Re:Reconstructing Twitter's Firehose on Wednesday February 27, 2019 @08:16PM (#19268293)
I worked with a company in the past that abused the twitter api to an unimaginable level from a single IP address.

That was a few years ago but at the time I’m pretty sure their blacklisting was between inexistent and pathetic.

Oh Sparrow. The only email client I ever really loved.
With all costs that goes into building a business (directly in $ or indirectly in hours) is it worth going down the path of saving money to this degree?

Setup heroku in <1 hour for <$100/month, forget about hosting and go build your product.

If $100/month breaks you, I think you’re in the wrong path anyways.

Agreed. Apple respecting user privacy at some level is a big decision factor for me lately.
I agree it’s hard to really stop being tracked but I’ve been trying to become less of an easy target lately. Stopped using gmail as my main email and made duckduckgo my default search engine. Plus the traditional browser extensions.

Far from perfect? Yes. But at least I take some confort from no longer being such a juicy ad target.

Couldn’t be happier with the decision to delete my Facebook account.
Re:Ask HN: What do you use instead of Gmail? on Thursday March 01, 2018 @06:51AM (#16491260)
I’m surprised no one mentions iCloud as a viable alternative. Reasons?
Re:Ask HN: Is Ruby on Rails still worth it? on Saturday November 25, 2017 @12:20PM (#15776787)
This. Webpacker enormously improved the JS experience with Rails.
