If margins are already at the least possible bottom (according to market logic this should always happen with commodities and competition) then you need to start to look for ways to reduce your operating costs in order to increase them again
Exactly this, I wonder why this setup (with ability for external techies to be granted temporary access) was not chosen in the first place. Considering the threat model, "my freezers all defrost at the same time all over my stores because of ~cyber~" should be a critical item to be discussed
Re:Quad9 (DNS Resolver) to Exit France on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @08:29AM (#50258133)
Because the incentives are not aligned. In a capitalist society societal consciousness is necessarily imprinted with capitalist (value extracting) logic.

If most of the people around you believe that making money is the logical way to survive then making money will become the goal of many to most human interactions. People will choose big publishers because big publishers guarantee them some amount of money (and services around publishing) in exchange for the ownership and monetisation rights (and then the right to sue somebody into oblivion when they break copyright law).

So the rich and vibrant ecosystem can be reality, just not within current society.

The comparison doesn't really make sense. Stockholm Syndrome is a pop-culture term that has no medical recognition and is psychologically contested

Corporate having interests that are not aligned with the interests of the majority and using their funds and power to influence the outcome to their liking is not a new concept
If you ignore the uncountable amount of incidents where LEOs abuse their power then you could think that, yes.

Otherwise you just know that LEOs are your enemy in more cases than not.

this page is extremely stuttery on my developer machine in chrome. why does every web page now have to have an amount of "fanciness" that apparently not even decently specced machines can take?
Re:It's Time to Investigate the AI Labs on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @03:09AM (#49889322)
The true value of AI lies in hyper-specialized models that you can run locally / are embedded in programs to make tedious tasks easier.

As true open-source models mature more and more they will make the big AI labs completely obsolete.

Also, German law recognises legal expropriation

to be fair, Meta is a conspiracy company, probably just not in this particular case
Re:Reverse Engineering My ADHD Test on Tuesday September 01, 2026 @02:44AM (#49518746)
If you pair meds with therapy and adjusting your life according to the things you learn about yourself through the lens of the diagnosis your quality of life can increase dramatically (at least it did for me).
what the person is criticizing is that fraud gets way less recognition as being disgusting than one-on-one violent crime. not trying to excuse the violence
There is already a named concept for it, you were probably looking for "social murder"
nobody becomes CEO because of being a cog, you have to intentionally seek it out and be actively willing to participate in the wage theft machine
The person in question obviously did not handle the hallucinations, though, did they?

Counterpoint: I give a shit about this because I love typefaces / fonts, how they are made and what the history behind them is.
Re:Eight Myths on Software Engineering and GenAI on Wednesday August 05, 2026 @04:40AM (#49180145)
I've found that using LLMs for significant amounts of code generation completely drain the result from any dopamine I would get doing it myself.

Have others noticed this as well? This is going so far as to me losing interest in side projects because I have "lost touch" with the code base.

Re:Steel Bank Common Lisp version 2.6.7 on Wednesday July 29, 2026 @07:06AM (#49095874)
Well, why use Elixir if I can use Clojure/Python/Ruby/Go?
Workplaces that are dictated by a boss or C-suite are anti-human as well, as they are dictatorial, not democratic.
Your work colleagues are not your family. Your superiors are not your friends. Treat every company as if they were going to look for a reason to fire you right now unless you can reasonably argue that they don't

They held an internal discussion amongst members and decided democratically which stance to take.
as someone who uses tailscale: exactly this.

i have my homelab only reachable via tailscale and can access everything i would ever want on the go that way. it was a matter of 15 min to get it all working.

You can update Win 10 to Win 11 IoT version for unsupported devices, by using something like massgrave
money that is stolen from the public at a certain point is really damaging, especially when people think they can get away with it.

some non-violent offenders definitely need to be put into the same prison as violent ones
