Not really a "secure" workstation if you can't have a secure bootchain. An open, secure platform would allow you to fuse your own root key.

Looks more like an issue with the VM rather than xhyve. Serial console does not seem to get respawned.
Not sure how useful OS X containers would be. Are you deploying on OS X?

If your objective is to sell a stolen iPhone then you still have to know the owners Apple ID and password due to activation lock. Being able to bypass Touch ID isn't going to help you.
Re:Apple's A7 is Made By Samsung on Friday September 20, 2013 @09:37PM (#6421588)
The last SoC where this has been the case is the A5 (using the the ARM Cortex-A9 MP). The Apple A6 and A7 don't use ARM cores and neither does Qualcomm in their Snapdragon SoCs.

"so what's left to steal?"

The CPU? ARMv8 isn't a thing, it's an instruction set specification, just like x86, implemented by various micro-architectures. Samsung doesn't do that (yet).

Re:Apple's A7 is Made By Samsung on Friday September 20, 2013 @07:28PM (#6421164)
The GPU is a design from Imagination Technologies, the CPU is an Apple design. What part of the SoC is "mostly designed by ARM"?

I wondered that too. Anyone care to share how to get by with a non-tech salary in the bay area?

> You could create a new account for each kid. At a mininum, this means that you have to re-purchase all the paid apps from every account.

Not necessarily, you could have separate iCloud accounts for each family member and one shared iTunes/App Store account. You can use a different account for iTunes and the App Store, so you don't have to change accounts all the time. At least that's what we do.

Re:Google Disabling Exchange Sync for Free Accounts on Friday December 14, 2012 @08:20PM (#4924209)
Apple didn't discontinue mac.com and me.com domains for existing accounts.

No! That's what makes it so awesome. It analyses the scenery and infers your position as you walk around.

Well, on a new Ubuntu installation the first thing I have to do now is:

  sudo apt-get remove unity-lens-shopping
But still way better than the crap windows users have to put up with.

Well, that makes it a lot less interesting than I hoped it would be.

Mh, looks like he is off by a factor of 256 :)

Google? (AdWords)

Oh yes, absolutely.
It is interesting to note that Apple now designes their own programming language, the compilers, the operating system, the processors and the products all that tech goes into. That's a pretty rare configuration of a company that hasen't existed since what? the 80s? [1]. That's a really unique opportunity to do really wild things, I hope they don't squander it. But I guess that requires a bold visionary, not of the Jobs type, more of an academic.

[1] I guess IBM still counts, but mainframes aren't that sexy anymore :)

> So i maintain that Apple would have needed Samsung to enable them to use an A15.

I would guess if Apple is capable of designing their own Microarchitectures they would be perfectly capable of compiling a bunch of HDL code they can get straight from ARM. [1]

> but i still don't think they would want to give apple a CPU platform that was undoubtedly better than their flagship phone so soon after releasing it

Samsung also acts as a foundry, they manufacture designs of other people in the same sense a printing shop prints books written by other people. I don't think this involves Samsung "giving Apple a CPU platform", at least not any more.

[1] Yes, in reality thats quite a bit more complicated.

A plastic monstrosity. For me, this is a non-starter at any price.
> While you still can, while the market is still hot, why not aim for something better like creating the next instagram or dropbox?

I guess not everyone wants to build yet another website/app. A lot of interesting/hard/capital-intensive R&D is done outside of the startup bubble and there are only so many job openings at SpaceX.

Nokia already has something similar up (http://maps3d.svc.nokia.com/webgl/index.html).

Looking at NYC or the Bay Area is pretty impressive.

> Yes but, in the case of android, the assembly work is rather trivial if they wanted to offer a standard android rom.

Only if you want to ship an SoC already supported by Linux. (Even then, there is tons of board specific code.) If not, you are looking at a very non trivial amount of work.

Google bought X.

X being pretty much everything they do besides Search. Not sure if that is much of an argument.

Most of their employees are not engineers, but work in retail. Which makes it a bit of an odd case among the other tech companies :)
