Re:Making the web fun again on Saturday June 29, 2013 @10:51PM (#5964514)
wow!! This is crazy. Been sleeping on this idea for the past 3 months or so. But for my day job, I would have definitely taken a stab at it. kudos for starting this.
Re:Letterpress Deconstructed on Saturday November 24, 2012 @10:43PM (#4827187)
There are two subtle aspect of the game. Both based on simplicity. First the actual rules of the game. Just like angry birds almost anyone can pick it up and start playing from the word go. The other is about the platform (read iOS) that helps you treat a simple action like flicking a tile such a joy.

I was so intrigued by the first part that I actually cloned the app so I could use it on non iOS platform. But the beauty of the app just could not be reecreated. It was just a hack and made in two days with not much thought into the ui. FYI, the clone is at http://letter-press.herokuapp.com

Same here.when I started 2 years I did want to do lifestyle business, but 6 months later realised that phrase Has different meaning for different folks.
Re:Announcing Micro Instances for Amazon EC2 on Thursday September 09, 2010 @01:21PM (#1676093)
Same here. I am sure EngineYard will use this opportunity to provide services on micro-instances. It's going to be a big boost to EngineYard. Heroku, not as much I guess since they anyway run multiple dynos on a single m/c.
Re:Crapmania on Monday May 10, 2010 @09:17AM (#1334307)
only to catch your eye. I can imagine it dying down quietly after the initial 'wow wow'
Re:Crapmania on Monday May 10, 2010 @08:04AM (#1334141)
> I'm not trying to be innovative, because frankly all you guys

If that what it is, so be it. Personally I am not taker of this idea

Re:Crapmania on Monday May 10, 2010 @01:37AM (#1333678)
If only it was that simple to take a well beaten idea (selling stuff) and re-position it with a recently successful platform (posterous) and hope for its succeeding on the back of the platform.

I am actually amazed by so many people praising it, comparing it to MVP, and debating on the pricing model, but are failing to see if there are any real takers in the fundamental idea (selling stuff)??

Sorry, but I just do not see any innovation here that may warrant its decent traction.

Re:Innovators Dilema - Applying it to Apple on Thursday May 06, 2010 @11:07AM (#1324555)
Nice summary. Completely agree to your points. The reasoning of value network may not directly apply to Apple, but yes Nokia was in the right position to make as much impact if not better than what Apple did with iPhone.
Re:Innovators Dilema - Applying it to Apple on Thursday May 06, 2010 @11:04AM (#1324551)
I wouldn't consider Nokia as having adapted to disruptive technology. I think Nokia's example is similar to 3M's. IBM may be a right candidate, but I wouldn't agree that it has adapted to disruptive change. Yes it has survived through it.
Re:Innovators Dilema - Applying it to Apple on Thursday May 06, 2010 @09:57AM (#1324407)
I am looking for any other examples where a company has successfully migrated to the next technology S curve. Any examples?
Re:Who's using Google App Engine? on Sunday April 04, 2010 @02:10AM (#1239857)
I have used google app engine for several projects. Most recently for http://www.smstweet.in This basically helps Indian mobile phone users to update their twitter status by sending a simple SMS at negligible price.

Overall I feel GAE is very good to quickly validate your core ideas without having to worry about scalability at all. In SmsTweet I created the app in couple of days and as traffic grew, started optimizing little by little by using Tasks and Memcache. Yes there are a tonne of restrictions if you chose GAE, but there are decent workarounds for every one of them. You also have to learn stuff specific to GAE (datastore, tasks for example), but I guess they are trivial to pick up. And finally if your application does pick up traffic you can easily convert it to paid version and pay only for the extra traffic that you get. So a win win situation for you.

Re:Ask HN: Are you a single founder ? on Monday March 15, 2010 @01:31PM (#1193481)
Yes I do. But you see, in India only one operator supports this service, and is not very cost effective. smstweetin helps everyone here tweet via sms.
Re:Ask HN: Are you a single founder ? on Monday March 15, 2010 @03:06AM (#1192318)
1) Since Oct 2009

2) Not applied

3) Not applicable

4) http://www.smstweet.in : send tweets by a simple SMS http://www.ideabubbles.in : loyalty program on mobile phone and other such ideas

Re:Show HN: My 2-Hour Twilio App on Sunday February 28, 2010 @04:18AM (#1156683)
I created a similar app, but primarily for India (using India local number). But it should work internationally also if you are willing to pay international SMS charges (don't know at what premium). I've hosted at appengine first to see the response http://sms2ping.appspot.com Do let me know if someone tries it. BTW I get a response message free so am not paying to send out messages as response

sounds like a catch 22 kinda situation to me. Or for that matter Heisenberg uncertainty principle.
Re:Can India take on Silicon Valley as a global R&D hub? on Saturday November 14, 2009 @01:26PM (#941931)
India has definitely progressed in the last 5-6 years, but to emulate a startup ecosystem like the valley takes a lot more time. Fred Wilson had a good article on this the other day. Valley today is what it is because a lot of ventures and startups happened around the 70's. India is seeing that kind of growth only today.

I would say atleast 10 more years before you can have a Techcrunch 50 in India at the same level as it happens in US

Re:Bit.ly exploit to brand your short url on Wednesday August 26, 2009 @08:33AM (#787035)
twitterfox that I use as my twitter client does not recognize "<user>.bit.ly/xyz".

If it is an undocumented feature, it is susceptible to link hijacking. I can take a url shortened by you (pplante) and brand it as my own mayank.bit.ly/xyz. That will not be cool...

Re:What happened to tcrn.ch? Techcrunch's own URL shortener on Wednesday August 26, 2009 @08:28AM (#787030)
Yes they were using services of http://awe.sm to to get their own shortlinks at http://tcrn.ch. But lately I am seeing that they are using bit.ly and not tcrn.ch
Re:Bit.ly exploit to brand your short url on Wednesday August 26, 2009 @07:54AM (#786993)
Thanks for the quick lookup. I did some dig on some sub-domains as well. Indeed looks like they have a wild card for sub-domain mapping.

I wonder then what is the extra advantage/feature that om and cbs are getting. Anyone can brand their bit.ly shortened url with or without bit.ly's consent
