Agreed. I can't understand how that's supposed to work: Texas citizens sue Facebook for not operating in their state, under Texas state laws?

Surely state laws and thus lawsuits based on them can only be applied to entities operating within those states.

Right?

I looked into the source of the above link and it's a collaborative git-managed team effort.

https://standardebooks.org/about

What an awesome project.

Are there any legal security issues to be concerned about as a developer of this kind of anonymous service?

I wonder every time I see a project like this, namely anonymous or transient hosting of any kind of user data, whether the developers get any kind of flak from agencies claiming it could be used to nefarious ends.

Serving plain text is obviously less of a concern than hosting images, video, etc.

But I imagine the more anonymous a service is, the more attractive it is for use by unsavory actors.

Anyone have any thoughts?

How do you know the above commenter not posting anything that's being censored? Do you know what they are posting?

If he/she "doesn't see it because he's not beingu censored", as you seem to imply that perhaps you are, his question would then be very relevant:

You could enlighten them with evidence so that they can also see what is obvious to you.

This strikes me as entirely being exactly the things of which you are accuse the parent post's author.

> "people like you are part of the problem"

> "such judgemental bullshit"

> "judgmental jerks who prolong the schism between people"

Whatever your positions or beliefs on the matter, or opinions of the post author to whom you are responding, your opinions and views could be more effectively expressed using logic and reasoning without the ad hominem and vulgarity.

In any regard: it's beneath the community standards of reasoned and respectful communication on HN, which I think many of us highly appreciate and value.

Question! Is there any reason this technique could not be applied to solve the Oregon wildfires?

It looks like Google 2FA will support using a Yubikey or something like it, which in my mind is preferable to being required to use the Google mobile app.

Re:What I wish I knew before building a Shopify App on Sunday March 21, 2021 @08:05AM (#26529797)
Are there any viable alternatives to shopify for developers that don't have these issues?
Annoying.
Most interesting line if this article for me:

> The ape cost £300, about £25,000 in today’s money (or about $34,000USD).

Holy cow, has there been a 10,000% inflation of the value of a pound in one century?

What's up with spam site returning in tech question Google top results?

Lately I've noticed a spam site showing up in the top 10 of most of my coding / tech issues Google searches. It returns a "headline soup" of other sites which have been obviously scraped from other blogs and help sites. It's annoyingly-convincing clickbait that's hooked me about 10-15 times now. There are no ads, nor links to any of the articles nor external sites. Just a wall of text.Example:...

Whoah!! That's frikkin awesome!

Has this made front page in HN yet at any point?

Re:Solid Project: All of your data, under your control on Tuesday February 02, 2021 @02:29AM (#25998225)
I want to love this.

But, in trying to imagine any scenario in which tech corporations might conceivably start hosting their internal user data on these external "Solid Pods", I'm left drawing a blank.

Until we have a way that tech companies start storing users' data in user-controlled infrastructure, I think this idea is a noble fantasy.

I would love to hear an argument that will convince me I'm wrong on this.

I suspect he/she means we have the ability to vote in our political system, which _does_ have the ability to influence what corporations are/aren't allowed to do.
That's gonna be a FRICKIN NOPE.

Question:

Is there any mechanism in place (aside from upvotes ranking, and astute HN commenters) to prevent endless duplicate submissions?

What safety guardrail would prevent a malicious/selfish/merely annoying self-promoter from flooding HN with submissions?

Re:Make Your Own Internet Archive with Archive Box on Wednesday January 20, 2021 @12:27AM (#25842870)
Interesting side note:

It seems like a lot of people in this thread have an interest in retaining a "replayable timeline" of their own browsing/reading history.

There's probably enough support here to gather a few contributors for an open source project.

This is a really good thing.

I know a lot of the people who are overwhelmed by debt don't have the spare mental or emotional space to deal with something else equally overwhelming, which is visualizing their path out of it.

Should be higher on the list.

The "great migration" of post-slavery African Americans from around 1916-1970.

Millions left the South under threat of death and worse to escape continuing slavery-like conditions and oppression of the Jim Crow era, radically altering the political, economic, and demographic balance of the nation.

Totally mind blowing, and never got a whiff of mention in my history books growing up beyond "Jim Crow laws were a thing. Then WWII happened"

This was beautiful.
There was a novel written on exactly that idea. In the story this idea results in exactly what the above poster was proposing to avoid.
