It doesn't take much to write a single paragraph, though. I think the quality of their response will become much more clear later.
I personally don't have a ton of trust in polls like that (referring to the Russian one). It is a strong claim to make that Putin is more popular in Russia than Biden in the US.
Let's be honest, most of the HN crowd probably has a paywall blocker extension. That, or they just turn their cookies off and the website can't keep track of how many articles they have left. Not so lucky people can probably do the same.
In my mind, a subscription model for these websites is essentially a donation model.
It sounds to me like you do agree with them. The OP wasn't saying Americans feel wealthier, but rather that the quality of life relative to the past is higher.
Libgen added a feature to download files with ipfs. It is ridiculously faster than a normal download.
I don't think that merely being a good writer will allow him to be "quoted beyond the lifespan of his contemporary readers." I agree with OP that I really don't see anything special about his writings, compared even with contemporary writers on technology like RMS.
You've completely changed the direction of the argument.
You're right, I could have phrased it better.
I have a Firefox extension called bypass paywalls.
You're missing my point on purpose.
I am trying to say there is a contradiction in what you are saying. You claim to want companies to move into impoverished areas, but also say doing that is evil. No company has ever moved into an impoverished area to help people, they have always done so out of self interest.
So which do you want, companies to move into impoverished areas (acting evil), or not (acting good, according to you).
It's happened more at the elementary school level.
Collective bargaining is 100% better than individual bargaining.
But, collective bargaining is only a single aspect of unions. They're not voting against it because they dislike collective bargaining, but because of other reasons. Collective bargaining is likely not a significant motivator for them because their salaries really are fairly high for the area.
I think in many cases unions are good, and in many others they are bad. I disagree that you can point at overall data and use that decide a specific case. Union data likely has severe survivorship bias, since unions likely tend to exist where they are more helpful.
What a pretentious thing to say.
Maybe your critical thinking is eroded if you refuse to try to understand why people would vote against a union. I'm not saying you have to agree with their decision, but it's ridiculous to assume everyone who disagrees with you is stupid.
Are you an Amazon employee at Bessemer? I'm pretty sure any employee there is more qualified to make a decision about their own lives than you.
So your issue is specifically with the mindset of the company, not the actions themselves? Why would a company ever do anything out of the goodness of their hearts? Shouldn't we just be looking at the result of them following market incentives?
If college is free (or loans are forgiven), people who never went to college would have to subsidize those who did.
If healthcare is free, people who are healthy have to pay healthcare for those who aren't.
I'm not taking a stance one way or the other on these issues, just trying to illustrate the argument.
Anecdotal evidence, but I did well on the SAT and spent very little money. I bought a few books, but easily could have pirated them online (like I did for all of my AP tests previously).
I think the SAT is likely more egalitarian than extracurriculars, although I cannot comment on its effectiveness as an indicator for college performance.
Someone who has to work after high school to support their family would not have the time or energy to play sports, do choir, run clubs, etc. But they could go to the library, pirate some books, print out the pages and practice 20 minutes a day starting 10-12 months ahead of time. It would be more difficult, of course, but I still think studying for a test is easier and cheaper than having extensive extracurriculars.
Anecdotally, I've also always heard SAT test prep is a waste of money.
I bet the author of his article will change their tune if someone makes them do an interview with a game they don't have any experience in, like chess, kerbal space program, OpenTTD etc.
Certainly, but it was a burden in that it took away an unnecessary privilege. The point of the boycotts was ultimately not to put an extra burden on others to remind them of their privilege.
The point of the original comment was that renaming master to main served as a reminder for people. But movements in the past that you were referencing never served a goal of solely putting burdens on other people.
Fighting for people's rights does not put an unnecessary burden on other people. Rosa Parks wanted to allow black people to ride anywhere on the bus, not make white people stand up and give them their places instead.
I can't take your argument seriously. Simply throwing up your hands and saying, "This theory exists, but it wasn't addressed in the article!" is ... well, not worth a lot.
Because they would always get social services. Undocumented children can get financial aid for college, for example, in California.
While the thing you're saying sounds reasonable it just practically isn't possible to workout in US politics.
Bank Holiday is an American thing too. FDR declared one in response to bank runs in the Great Depression.
Hezbollah isn't the PLO, they were formed out of Shia militia groups from Lebanon's previous civil wars, not to help the Palestinians.
Lebanon absolutely does not have the Palestinians rights in mind. They have "refugee camps" with tens of thousands of people in them that they have been kept there since the 1950's and 1960's, and haven't given them citizenship.
How come you're so concerned about other countries making peace with Israel, but not concerned with countries making peace with Lebanon?
What sources do you follow other than HN?
On the bright side, maybe censorship will be what finally sparks the Linux Desktop.
It's easy to talk in platitudes that Nazis' free speech should be silenced when you've never lived somewhere with no free speech or been accused of being a Nazi.
Using a minimalist Android theme has concretely helped me with using my phone less. It just keeps 8 productivity apps on my home screen, and everything else I have to search for. Adding a long and hard to type password with letters also helped.

I've recently been using node and Java Spring so I can learn how to build fully-fledged web apps. One of my side projects is an API that has to be secure because it has access to private data. I used JWTs for authentication but I'm not sure if it is actually secure. When developing a product, how do you build and test it so that user information is protected, your APIs can't be abused etc.?...
