Local PCs cannot win. Local software for productivity works now because of network bandwidth and latency.

With mainframes, network latency hardly matters compared to overall batch processing time, and mainframes processing multiple requests simultaneously have total throughput much higher than when handling a single request

Re:Is It EDT or EST? on Sunday November 01, 2026 @09:45AM (#50326192)
Yes, totally. But usually the answer is Yes or No. Not pages on pages of explanation of the question with just a tiny unclear section with the answer
Re:Is It EDT or EST? on Sunday November 01, 2026 @08:31AM (#50325532)
This website looks to be written by humans but has all the characteristics of LLM writing.

The site seeks to answer one question. But the answer to that question isn't even very clear on the page. Theres a ton of space devoted to explanations but only a tiny spot that highlight EST as the answer. And its easy to miss with the color design

Re:The question we should all be asking about AI on Sunday November 01, 2026 @08:26AM (#50325480)
As much as it'd thrill me in one of the worst Pyrrhic victories to see the AI bubble burst, I think it is way too early to claim that a single bad day or a single bad week means it's collapsing.
The first 90% is always the easy part. The second 90% is the hard part.
It seems all too common these days for tech startups to try to wall off a common good and try to sell access to what used to be free

> Before, people were responsible for the dependencies they were importing.

This is an attitude not reflective of reality for those that wrote code in the pre npm days

Might does not make right. Even if your assertion is true.
Andy Yen wants us to live in a dystopia where we all pray at the alter of maximum profit and sacrifice everything to it.

I refuse to believe we live in that world. While we're a long way from a star trek utopia, there's no reason to believe standing for morals and principles is impossible in this day and age. A lot of social media and the news are here to tell you thats a hopeless dream, but it's not. Get out an meet people especially the up and coming generation. People have been raised to be kind, and it shows.

The long arm of history bends towards progress not because of inevitability but because _we bend it_. Get out there, do the right thing and leave the world a little bit better than you found it. There's still plenty of profit in that. Enough to share even

Re:If IPv4 Were Land on Thursday October 29, 2026 @10:56AM (#50290157)
For every complex and difficult problem, someone has an easy, simple and wrong solution. Usually the presence of "just" is a good clue.
Re:If IPv4 Were Land on Thursday October 29, 2026 @10:54AM (#50290123)
I'd love to do that, if my ISP would provide me an IPv6 address. Windstream doesn't provide IPv6s. They did a trial a few years ago rolling it out and then undid it.

It's crazy I can get fiber to my house in the US, but not IPv6.

But doordash says this merger means more choice for the consumer, how could antitrust play a role here? I mean, unless they're lying about removing choices from the market place will result in more choices in the market place, but doordash wouldn't do that would they?

Re:Amazon Is Gutting Its AI Division After Sustained Failure on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @12:57PM (#50276737)
I'm disengaging from this conversation since you seem unwilling to engage with facts. 60,000 software engineers are not being laid off at microsoft, full stop.
Re:Amazon Is Gutting Its AI Division After Sustained Failure on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @11:35AM (#50275434)
So is a pacemaker. Still, what is your point?
Re:Amazon Is Gutting Its AI Division After Sustained Failure on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @11:48PM (#50269155)
Microsoft isn't laying off 60,000 people. They offered voluntary separation agreements, but nobody was laid off.

For 1 million software engineers in the US to lose their job you'd have to shrink the industry by 62.5% and nobody is doing that. We employ more software engineers this year than last year, which was higher than the year before which was higher than a year before. Get off the social media and look at real statistics and news.

This gleeful nihilism isn't health friend

Re:Amazon Is Gutting Its AI Division After Sustained Failure on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @08:19PM (#50267778)
Writing lines of code by hand is all of human software development? Pretty sure in all of those companies its still software engineers writing the code, even if they're using LLMs to do it.

Unless you're making the claim that software engineers aren't involved or that only writing code is software development.
