I've been using tmux for a while now, and it's a great tool. I hardly open any new terminal windows now.

If anyone is interested in the settings I've accumulated over the months, here is my config file: https://github.com/ludwig/dotfiles/blob/master/tmux.conf

Re:tmux 1.8 Released on Friday March 29, 2013 @04:22PM (#5462831)
For what it's worth, here is my carefully crafted ~/.tmux.conf file. I was used to screen, so I carried most of the keybindings along when I switched to tmux.

Re:Who Can Name the Biggest Number? on Sunday January 20, 2013 @12:03AM (#5086057)
Graham's number is big, sure. But in a similar duel[1] between two MIT professors, they settled on this number: “The smallest number bigger than any number that can be named by an expression in the language of first order set-theory with less than a googol (10^100) symbols.” Try and beat that! :)

The second interpretation of that quote is that beginners can also see/find things that experts would miss. Not surprisingly, that quote is from Suzuki's book "Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind"[1]. I view both interpretations as valid.

Not long enough! I can't speak for anyone else, but you've eloquently described the main reason why I found Steve Jobs so inspiring. If you've read The Talent Code, I am definitely reminded of the chapters on Ignition, where the author Daniel Coyle writes about the conditions under which people are inspired and motivated.

Wait, I'm confused. They quoted figures of 8000 boxes at $4 each, but on Fred Wilson's blog post the quote indicates it was 500 boxes at $40 each. Which one was it?
More like you can never get reservations there. They're constantly eluding you, if you will.
Reminds me of the old adage which partly reads "...if your ideas are any good, you'll have to ram them down people's throats."
Re:LaTeX coffee stains on Sunday November 21, 2010 @12:42AM (#1926433)
Nice. I'm getting flashbacks of the time I managed to get a big coffee stain on one of the pages of my application to MIT. This was at the post office, minutes before the final deadline >.<

I simply wrote "sorry!" right by the stain, and mailed it off. I've no idea what influence this might've had, but it didn't seem to hurt since I got accepted anyway :)

Re:Introduction to tmux (alternative to GNU screen) on Friday October 29, 2010 @01:35PM (#1848122)
Neat. I was wondering when that patch would work itself into the main line. I had been running a locally compiled version for so long that I forgot to check back on it.

Re:Introduction to tmux (alternative to GNU screen) on Friday October 29, 2010 @08:19AM (#1847010)
I recently switched to tmux after years of having used screen, and it's great. It didn't take me that long to configure, which I did mostly by working my way through the man page.

For me, the two killer features that made me switch were the vertical splits (vanilla screen only does horizontal splits), and the distinction between windows and panes.

If it helps anyone else, here's my ~/.tmux.conf file[1], with keybindings that match closely to the screen setup I've grown so accustomed to.

Re:Ask HN: Who Plays Go? on Sunday October 24, 2010 @08:06AM (#1825930)
You made the right choice :)

I got to about 7 kyu, and then it suddenly hit me. Balance is key. Therefore you should concentrate on those aspects of your life which have become more urgent. I haven't played very much after that realization.

In my view, Go (or any other hobby, really) would stand in one corner of the board. Your family, personal life, and work would be at the other three corners. As the situation on the board evolves, you would choose your best play. Focusing too much on any one area would leave you over-concentrated. It would be too inefficient. You'd easily secure one corner but lose the other three.

But then, if you spread yourself too thin all over the place, trying to please everyone, including yourself, that would leave you with a vulnerable position that could fall apart at any moment. That's clearly not good either.

However, if you patiently settle your stone formations before moving on the next area, if you gain strength in one corner/side before expanding towards another, if you are fluid in your decision making process when choosing a direction (life does throw you stumbling blocks doesn't it?), THEN you'd be a wise man indeed :)

I do make it a point to participate in a local yearly tournament (five games over two days) whether I feel ready or not. One day, though, I will come back to Go in full-force.

I'm also ludwig on KGS, btw. If anyone fancies a game, you can always reach me via twitter (@ludwig1024).
