Re:In Los Angeles Coders Are Too Scared To Take Risks on Monday July 18, 2011 @03:30PM (#2777787)
Another problem is that there is no "Category Killer" company which can incubate tech focused entrepreneurs like there is in SV. In SV there are companies liek Paypal, Google, Facebook, Yahoo, etc. who attract top engineering talent. Had there been a category killer company produced in Socal I think there'd be a much different tech landscape.
Oh no! singularity is playin itself out
Re:Ask HN: Healthcare Startups? on Wednesday February 09, 2011 @02:18PM (#2198877)
The existing electronic health records landscape is incredibly fragmented. I read a post somewhere recently that listed 400 different EHR businesses. The interoperability problems are the same ones that the internet experienced in the early days. Little standards, different platforms, siloed data. I think the interesting opportunities are in developing applications that help medical practices fulfill the "meaningful use" criteria. Each individual module can be fulfilled using specific technology, that doesnt necessarily need to be certified. For example, a practice can use one technology to fulfill their CPOE requirement while using a completely different vendor to do Clinical Decision support. You can be the go to player for a specific module.
The 5x5 programs are usually geared towards intermediates. I've done a few cycles of Bill Starr's 5x5 program but only after I'd learned the rudiments of weight training. I'd use starting strength as a beginning point, then progress to 5x5, HST, MaxOT and any of the other programs you might find at bodybuilding forums.
didnt see your email in your profile. i might be moving up there soon, we should connect.

Re:Buddhism and Happiness: Sitting Quietly, Doing Something on Thursday November 18, 2010 @12:06PM (#1918429)
The benefits you get are equanimity, and concentrated attention. In sports it's called being "in the zone". It's a state of mind where you are fully present and time slows down. Others call it "flow." Now imagine if you could direct that type of concentrated attention to any activity that you desire whether its hacking, sports, or writing.
