Show HN: Audio Visualizer HUD for macOS

https://www.krisdigital.com/en/blog/2026/03/28/macos-audio-visualizer-rust/

I built a little audio visualizer that lets you configure multiple panels with custom WGSL shaders. With the app in focus just hit "c" to open the config panel :)I am not really good with shaders atm but it is possible to convert shaders you like with a tool called naga, link in the article...A nice visualization can boost your productivity by up to 20% btw :)

Re:A Technical Intro to the Fediverse on Thursday February 19, 2026 @06:05AM (#47072530)
I wanted to build an easy to self host old myspace style app that is connected to the fediverse - it took me a while to figure out how activity pub is actually meant to work and what the challenges are to be a fediverse citizen. I thought it could be useful to write it down, sitting somewhere in between the detailed activity pub specs and the high level wikipedia description.
Can confirm the lasers are overpowered:)) I think the upgrades are too steep and the damage should fall off a little bit with distance…
Thank you I did not notice that, will try it out! I added a new tower according to the original game - it collects the energy and you can connect the other towers to it to get a boost when there is enough energy stored! With the laser - I am not sure if it should lose a little bit of power with distance, that could also help to balance it.
Congratulations!! Good job! I am using a trackpad but it should also work on phone or tablet, then you need to rotate to landscape :)
Thank you for your feedback! Yes the introduction is missing! There is just a little help screen that tells you to place the towers. I will add some more info! The missing “grid area” is part of the difficulty;)
Thank you for playing and the Feedback :) it is not a polished game and I did not try to copy the original closely, I would not know how to get it anymore… yes this game is more about moving fast, I run out of money pretty quickly ;) Downside is that one is so busy with moving and upgrading that it is hard to watch the game - though at a certain point when everything is set up you can usually sit back and relax. I may add more levels before the current ones to make the entry more smooth :) I noticed that balancing levels is not easy at all ;)

About placing the towers - this is actually part of the game and should not be too easy ;)

The purple missiles only damage the target they are hitting!

Good luck with level three! If you get stuck let me know, I can give some hints!

Show HN: 2d Tower Defense Mini Game in Three.js (Geodefense)

https://www.krisdigital.com/lab/creepdefense/

Three levels (+random) so far - can you beat the game?It is not polished by any means but I checked it on all devices I own (in landscape) that it is beatable :)Tips: Move quickly and don't forget to upgrade your towers...Geodefense was a popular iPhone game in 2008 which is no longer available (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeoDefense)I did it mostly to play with shaders and three.js.

Re:RSS is back as an underpinning to SlackOps on Friday July 22, 2022 @01:53PM (#32195003)
I had a similar problem and created nooshub.com some years ago, it groups similar articles and uses the group size to detect news trends, but everything can also be configured per feed collection if you prefer chronological feeds. I use this to quickly check what is going on with high rate feeds, for other feeds like podcasts I keep it classic... You can see it in action on some pages that do not require login like https://www.nooshub.com/pages/7-news-international
Nice read after my app update got rejected some weeks ago for not using in app purchases, even though it was already on the store for a year. It is a news reader app, but they said it does not fall under the "reader" category where they make an exception. I did not even want to make an app, but basically all the feedback from users I got was: is there an app out yet? Sadly progressive web apps are bullied, for example you cannot play audio in the background as I do for podcasts. But there is no way I will add IAP, I am not even trying to sell anything, it just for existing users. Kind of sad you cannot just provide an app even though you pay a fee for the store as developer.

The second problem I have as someone who is offering subscriptions himself, is how Apple earns money with scam subscriptions. I could have justified the closed Appstore in the past by saying that they take care that you do not get trash on your phone, but - the App Store is full of trash. Check the top two guitar tuners, they are free. Open them up and you will see a 8$/week subscription, that you accidentally agree to with the finger on your home button. The ratings are full of people complaining, but Apple puts them at the top. There is no way they don't see this shady business. Wonder how much of their revenue comes from shitty scam apps.

People who suggest to just not be present on the app store, it is just not an option for many businesses, as the App Store is basically a monopoly.

Re:Ask HN: M1 MacBook Pro or Lenovo X1 Carbon with Ubuntu on Sunday October 24, 2021 @01:26PM (#28980045)
Had the same experience with really bad performance - good to hear that it is better now. I also saw some demos running Ubuntu ARM in a VM called UTM. Not sure if that is more performant than Docker4Mac though, otherwise that would probably be my dream setup…
Re:Ask HN: M1 MacBook Pro or Lenovo X1 Carbon with Ubuntu on Sunday October 24, 2021 @01:17PM (#28979934)
My current/last MacBook also had 256gb and yes, can confirm that it fills up rather quickly. Just installing XCode takes 15gb!

Thanks for the info! Crazy that the ram is enough, I checked the ram usage on my current machine, and it was about 23gb… It would be much easier decision if they would just let you upgrade the RAM (good old days…), especially considering the crazy prices.

I am using https://hnrss.org/frontpage?points=200&comments=200, not sure exactly what it does but it works for me to not miss out on anything (I think)
Re:RSS is wonderful on Sunday October 24, 2021 @12:39PM (#28979517)
Not sure if that is what you are looking for, but I developed nooshub.com for that reason. It has the functionality to group similar articles, and the stories you don‘t wanna miss usually produce large groups that are then presented as top news. There is also a „in a nutshell“ page for top news from all feeds and a „gems“ page for low frequency content that otherwise can get buried. Maybe it is what you are looking for and works for you, it takes a little bit to setup but once it‘s done it is like checking Twitter…

Not sure: https://www.tuxedocomputers.com/en/Infos/Help-Support/Freque... seems the value is the time in idle… the test I read also did not have an external graphics card. But you also might be right!
Re:Ask HN: M1 MacBook Pro or Lenovo X1 Carbon with Ubuntu on Thursday October 21, 2021 @06:10PM (#28951438)
Thank you for the hint! Did not know that you can configure them with Linux! For the Docker thing - yes, my dream would be just having a Ubuntu partition and macOS for the rest. Maybe it will happen with M1 some time…
Re:Ask HN: M1 MacBook Pro or Lenovo X1 Carbon with Ubuntu on Thursday October 21, 2021 @04:52PM (#28950688)
Looks good! The only downside I found after a short research seems to be battery life (about 5h)...
Re:Ask HN: M1 MacBook Pro or Lenovo X1 Carbon with Ubuntu on Thursday October 21, 2021 @02:29PM (#28948923)
Thank's for the info! The WSL2 solution Windows has is pretty perfect, but that is a red line I cannot see me cross at this point :) That should be built into macOS! I hoped that the Carbon would get better ratings, but so far the tendency is pretty clear pro Macbook..
Re:Ask HN: M1 MacBook Pro or Lenovo X1 Carbon with Ubuntu on Thursday October 21, 2021 @02:22PM (#28948801)
Even if I need to sell organs for it? (sorry been watching Squidgame :))
Re:Ask HN: M1 MacBook Pro or Lenovo X1 Carbon with Ubuntu on Thursday October 21, 2021 @02:18PM (#28948728)
Thank's for the info with the Carbon battery, I had hoped they are more solid... M1 compatibility is ok for the most things I guess, according to https://isapplesiliconready.com Not sure if it is really more performant though for what I will use it for.
Re:Ask HN: M1 MacBook Pro or Lenovo X1 Carbon with Ubuntu on Thursday October 21, 2021 @12:42PM (#28947166)
OMG, that sounds worse than I expected.. I just asked in their chat window if it is somehow possible to get one earlier than 6 weeks (it said at least 6 weeks) but it isn't :) Their website is also kinda crappy, btw. I am currently running Ubuntu on my old Macbook and it is perfectly fine and fast, but because of a problem with the discrete GPU I don't know how long it will last, sometimes it won't start anymore.. I am looking at the framework laptop again, can't remember why I discarded it... Probably a Macbook is still the least of trouble and best hardware - for the price of being locked in..
Re:Ask HN: M1 MacBook Pro or Lenovo X1 Carbon with Ubuntu on Thursday October 21, 2021 @12:22PM (#28946793)
I think I know what you mean, for me it is the little things like the preview app on mac that I miss the most. And the trackpad that is by far better.
Re:Ask HN: M1 MacBook Pro or Lenovo X1 Carbon with Ubuntu on Thursday October 21, 2021 @10:54AM (#28945356)
Looks good! I am not so much in Google Camp so, probably could not get happy with Chrome OS...
Re:Ask HN: M1 MacBook Pro or Lenovo X1 Carbon with Ubuntu on Thursday October 21, 2021 @10:37AM (#28945091)
Thank's for the confirmation, I think Docker is not going anywhere soon, so yeah.. But your impression might be correct (that it is faster..) I read they use a new virtualisation, hyperkit vs hypervisor. This guy even carries a second laptop just for running Docker https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/mac-m1-as-dev-machine-d... :))
Re:Ask HN: M1 MacBook Pro or Lenovo X1 Carbon with Ubuntu on Thursday October 21, 2021 @09:57AM (#28944443)
Mine had one keyboard fix, single key not working, they needed to change the whole top. Then the first complete meltdown, which luckily fell under warranty, friend of mine had the same meltdown earlier -> no warranty -> trash. Then the second meltdown.. So yeah... I am thinking getting a more specced out Ubuntu laptop with lots of ram, then a base Mac like Air or Mini for the rest..
Re:Ask HN: M1 MacBook Pro or Lenovo X1 Carbon with Ubuntu on Thursday October 21, 2021 @09:52AM (#28944375)
Does that also count for the file system? That was the biggest pain point in the past, working with shared folders between container and host. I even needed a tool called docker-sync to even make it usable..

Ask HN: M1 MacBook Pro or Lenovo X1 Carbon with Ubuntu

I am really struggling making a decision to get the new Macbook Pro 14, I had even ordered one already with 32GB and 1TB, looked a long time at that 3200€ before clicking the button and just cancelled the order again. I was wondering if others have the same thoughts.Short background: I use my laptop 95% for development, mostly web, including docker. My current Macbook Pro 15 2011 died two years...
