Re:Geo-Scalable (Big Data or IoT) Architectures? on Wednesday August 09, 2017 @08:47AM (#14968075)
Since posting this question, I have been reading through a few presentation and youtube videos. So far I have gathered the following:

Option 1: Use a customized solution stack from a cloud vendor like Amazon, Azure. To quickly bootstrap, there are also consulting firms that specialize in one of these cloud solutions.

Option 2: Build using open-source stacks. Couple of interesting architectures are : SMACK , Lambda.

Any help that you could provide in pointing to the right links or just notes from which I could derive an reference architecture will be greatly appreciated.

Geo-Scalable (Big Data or IoT) Architectures?

Can you share your experiences building an application that has to be : - geo scalable : allows for ingestion of data from nodes that are spread across the globe (possibly like IoT). - semi-structured data : data that is not all sorted out. scope for new devices to send data that is not yet known - has an single-pane/portal/api that allows for querying aggregated data from different locations.

Re:Comparing nights-watch with Operations Team on Thursday July 27, 2017 @11:22PM (#14871706)
Specifically, who are the allies in terms of storage and network providers? Can the old world order still save the day, or is there a need for new solutions like being discussed here : https://blog.openebs.io/tech-enthusiasts-weighing-in-on-cont...
How are you deploying? Are you using Tectonic? https://coreos.com/openstack/
Is there a better place to host container images, that can provide real tangible metrics in terms of who is really pulling/using the docker image -- like client geo location.

take redis for example, 10M+ pulls. can i know who is really using (is it an automated bot? or ci system or actual applications).

Having a GUI that is easy to setup is definitely a plus. My experience is that along with setting up, we also would like to add some monitoring capabilities that would send us some alerts about the disk failures or usage threshold stats. I have been part of the team that built ElastiStor (ZFS on FreeBSD), http://www.cloudbyte.com/.
Re:The Utter Uselessness of Job Interviews on Monday April 10, 2017 @07:07AM (#14077445)
Hiring candidates through interviews or through known contacts list is just about taking a chance. There are several unknowns which can only come out in the course of time.

I agree with vonnik, that running the Project in Open Source definitely has an edge in the interviewing process. The potential employee has already seen your code (or you can make sure that he has), knows what he/she is getting into. I would seek for some links of their contributions to other projects which will help me evaluate if their code.

Of-course less than 5% of the job applicants now have had the opportunity to develop for open source. (Either the folks contributing in the open source love their job so much, that they hardly look around or they are already being offered jobs without looking..).
