To jump in front of a bullet that no one wants to be struck by? As a PM, I want my eng team to be courageous and stand by their decisions rather than respecting me only once I offer my self in a sacrificial ritual.
Re:Lessons learned from the recent job hunt on Monday May 09, 2022 @12:04PM (#31315869)
I’d prefer I’d no one was punching anyone. Just because a person belongs to a privileged group doesn’t mean that they should be subject to any harassment.

We’re smart enough to convey our viewpoints without having to insult. It only helps with our righteous self-indignation at the expense of making inroads towards actual, positive change.

Ask HN: How do you time innovative ideas?

As in, when is an idea too early? Or when is it too late? To what effect does the general zeitgeist play and how should consider being a trend maker/setter?Of course, this is the age old question but I'm looking for advice (anecdotal, in literature, etc.) or discussion to tackles this subject as I'm sure we've all thought about it from time to time.

Re:Tuesday was my last day as CEO of CircleUp on Thursday October 15, 2020 @04:31PM (#24793504)
Let’s not do that. I’m incredibly appreciative of OPs transparency here. As a person who is susceptible to the same degree of stress and mental health toil, let’s not make the story about the investor but rather around the stresses of being a CEO.
Or perhaps we should take a step back and design a new set of rules that can allow Twitter and other companies to moderate without having to be responsible for the content. I feel like there’s a false dichotomy being portrayed here that’s unnecessary.
That’s what’s happening. The article mentions that exact scenario.
Having worked at an OEM and in automotive I can tell that what you’re saying is simply not true.

Where would they get the money? From cutting out the middleman, from increasing sales by offering an alternative to the terrible dealership experience (spending 1-2 hours buying a car is not ok) and from gaining the flexibility to offer alternative business models (i.e. subscription models).

Dealerships are the past. They may very well be the deadweight that will cause incumbent OEMs to sink rather than swim.

I believe this was at Snap Inc. I’ll try to find the link later.
Maybe that’s the business model? It may be cheaper to train than to retain.

You’re assuming there’s only one business model.

Re:Detroit News Vehicle of the Year is a Tesla on Friday December 28, 2018 @09:04AM (#18776740)
I agree. I has the 2017 S-Line Prestige Edition and I much prefer the interior of a Tesla Model 3.

My resume is, admittedly, overboard. I created it back when I needed to stand out. I used InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.

That's an example of great design.
Re:The purpose of Tesla is not to make money on Sunday November 26, 2017 @11:48PM (#15784919)
I can't help but view Tesla as an ongoing kickstarter. This was made even more apparent in their latest unveiling. I say this as a fan of their vision, mission and current product offering.
Re:New Tech Incubators Put Finances First on Tuesday November 14, 2017 @10:42AM (#15695949)
IMO this is highly dependent on certainty. If there is a low uncertainty around the product, technology, and/or market then this is a very useful exercise. However, as uncertainty grows so does the futility of trying to articulate a coherent business model.
Re:Ask HN: Do you hold any cryptocurrencies? on Wednesday November 01, 2017 @09:33PM (#15607137)
Do you think the latest surge is sustainable?
While that makes for a great anecdote, there are action-oriented people should not be heeding that advice. An appropriate balance between rational ignorance and analysis paralysis must be struck. Otherwise, it's left to others to deal with your predisposition towards an extreme.
Re:ARCore: Augmented reality at Android scale on Tuesday August 29, 2017 @04:02PM (#15127179)
Not only that, but you can quickly solve that issue by going with Pixel/Nexus devices. So I'm not sure that the criticism is well-deserved.

Not OP, but it's not just the ability but its also the willingness to learn new things.
Re:Ask HN: What costly inefficiency do you see at work? on Thursday August 17, 2017 @05:02PM (#15040982)
I believe the future of companies will be internal startups vying for investment dollars. With disruption challenging even the most traditional and stable industries, we'll think back and muse to ourselves as to how political and beauracratic we were.

That being said politics will always exist, but not the debilitating level (IMO) to which we've seen in the past.

Re:Cover (YC W16) Raises $8M Series A on Thursday July 13, 2017 @06:25PM (#14765858)
Yikes, nice catch.
While you may not get validation, you will get a critical analysis of your idea from multiple perspectives. I've already seen some responses with amazing insights that would've taken an inordinate amount of time to gather.
I'm curious to see what improvements to your workflow and to the experience you have seen. I'm open to anecdotes but I'd love some metrics if you have any.
Re:How to Keep Your Best Programmers (2012) on Wednesday May 31, 2017 @02:09PM (#14454667)
>Process is the enemy.

Nowhere in the article is process mentioned. So I'm not sure how you concluded that process was to blame.

Let's say that process is the cause. How would you evaluate and reward people for 'business impact', presuming we have a method of determining it? Wouldn't it be through a process?

Perhaps what you meant to say was that poorly designed processes or a process driven culture cause problems, one of which is employee boredom.
