I learned Java specifically for Android, but I really like it for all around development. C# is probably better, but it owes a lot of its success to Java IMO.
Re:Ask HN: Has Twitter's latest UI change worked for you? on Thursday June 28, 2012 @02:45PM (#4173221)
Honestly it hardly made any difference for me. The only thing about the latest update that bugs me is now the birdie is tilted more upwards than he was before.

Looks like a cool idea! I just might have to use this when my product comes out of beta.

=)

Glad that's out of the way. I wonder if there's any opportunity for a business hidden somewhere in this ruling.

Bumper stickers for angry Republicans or something, lol

Yea I was gonna say get some bomb headphones and blast the music of your choice when you're working. That's if you're into music while coding, of course.

If you get distracted by music, try getting a playlist of instrumental music, or music with lyrics in a different language. I can code with lyrics no problem, but when I'm writing an article or something I go music w/o lyrics... or music in Spanish!

I'd like some feedback on the project I'm working on. I'm finishing some UI work right now, when I update the apk on the Marketplace I'll definitely hit you up, thanks man.
Re:Ask HN: Where are the SoCal hackers? on Wednesday June 27, 2012 @02:44PM (#4168484)
I'm in San Diego. I've passed up opportunities in the Bay because I love it here. My girlfriend is getting her MBA at SDSU, so that's another reason, I suppose. I might have to give in and get a job up there in the end but I hope not.

I've been working on developing a business in my spare time for a while now, while it won't be the next Google or Yahoo in terms of numbers, hopefully it will provide some opportunities for SoCal developers. Maybe Y Combinator can help out with making that happen =)

Maybe you could do something like StackOverflow does. You are given the option to login using your Google account credentials there. This way it's just the simple press of a button, both sides get what they want. You can login with Facebook as well, it seems: http://stackoverflow.com/users/login

If Apple keeps waging patent war it is going to find itself in this position.

Agreed. They're just trying to bully you out of the domain.

Anecdote: A co-worker owned a domain www.furrytown.com back in the 90s (a pet lovers site, not the other thing...). Mattel was planning on launching a big toy line called Furry Town, and sent him similar letters to the one you've received telling him he should just give up the site or else face legal action. They claimed he had just scooped the domain up after he "saw it was copyrighted" by Mattel (of course he had no idea they were doing this before they sent the letters).

Well, he wasn't bullied by them, and just held his ground and told them they could try to prove it if they wanted, but he wouldn't just give up the domain. After a week or so they email him asking him what it would take for him to give them the rights to the domain. He said $10,000 dollars, and he received a check in the mail 10 days later.

Moral: Don't get bullied by a big company with no grounds for their claims.
