I wear khakis and a dress shirt just to put me in the working mood.
No shoes or socks though.
My idea is that the skills required to build things are at odds with the traits/skills required to persuade.
My cherry picked list:
Building: honesty, introversion, reason
Selling: charisma, extroversion, empathy
I’ve only ever heard of managers “working on developer KPIs” and never seen them actually defined and distributed.
I definitely agree that
(in general) devs and mgmt do not understand one another.
I think this is bc one practices abstraction while the other practices persuasion.
I see these two forces as equal and opposite. A yin and yang kind of thing.
It appears that the best orgs have these two things in balance.
As a developer, I’ve noticed a pattern: devs complain about too many meetings -> devs are left alone (aka isolated) -> devs complain about being left out of decision making process/chain of comm.
Tattooing a wolf on yourself is sending a strong signal.
I’m from the Midwest/South and a lot of the author’s behavior would be considered normal here regardless of income.
Although I’m not sure if stealing the head phones was a good call? (Unless they had a policy stating they were fair game)
Lol, idk if that’s true? I’ve been poor working with poor people and we did not all say hello on a regular basis
Interplanetary battle bots
I’m curious if they would petition Steve Jobs today if he were alive.
One time an old guy faking a limp walked out with a $3k Les Paul stuffed down his pants.
Our managers chased after him and tackled him in the parking lot.
Afterwards they were reprimanded for creating a litigious situation...
Other than that just a lot of teenagers butchering their Dad’s favorite songs on guitar.
I worked there once as a sales associate.
Worst job I’ve ever had.
Disclaimer: I am terrible at sales.
Managers at my small company don’t last three years
I half expected this to just redirect to twitter.
Like what? Everyone always bashes where they live though, right?
Awesome! Thx I’ll check this out.
The latter. I’m attracted to the Icelandic culture as well as the landscape. I mentioned Reykjavík specifically because I assumed most dev jobs would be there, but I really just want to move to Iceland, haha.
Learning new languages is fun though! I think it changes the way your brain thinks.
Hi! Thanks for reaching out. I specialize in enterprise web applications. Mostly PHP, Node JS, and React.. but I can learn new things very quickly.
Here’s my email if you’re interested: [email protected]
Agreed. Better to keep them corralled.
Now that I think about it we did hike for 25min out to the plane crash. When we arrived it was full of instagram models taking selfies and wearing Supreme gear.. not really the kind of wilderness I was looking for.
On the flip side, we did see the Northern lights at a camp site up North. There were only a handful of people since it was still in the Winter months. It felt very pure and intimate. Like it was our secret no one else knew about. One of the greatest experiences of my life. I think that’s what all tourists are searching for.
I went to Iceland back in March. I drove around the entire island in a “touristy” Mercedes camper van.
As a visitor, I would say there were the perfect amount of tourists there.. not so many that it ruined my “experience”. However, that was in March. I can’t imagine what it’s like in Summer.
I’m now learning to speak Icelandic, and looking for software jobs in Reykjavik if that tells you anything. (Hiring managers please contact me)
Maybe I’m part of the problem?
You should go to Iceland.. it’s epic in a non-cliche kind of way.
