Enjoyed reading this too. Added Termination Shock to my reading list.
Re:The world has more trees than it did 35 years ago (2021) on Monday September 12, 2022 @07:47PM (#32818906)
Someone advocating direct air carbon capture made this strong argument that stuck with me: Carbon released by drilling oil didn't come from trees. So recapturing the carbon from what we think was released from trees burned down before does not include carbon stored underground.
Re:Ask HN: What happened to Clubhouse? on Monday March 28, 2022 @11:22AM (#30831454)
I have a friend I knew from work who is severely hard of hearing (and we were actually a business phone company). I invited him to Clubhouse and asked him to try Twitter Spaces. We haven't seen captioning work on Clubhouse whereas it's available to all users on Twitter Spaces.

Also, isolated to me or a tiny subset of users - the only way to sign in is with a OTP sent via SMS. The delivery is very spotty for my carrier for some unknown reason (other services can deliver fine). So like right now, I can't log in and have to wait until they quietly restore delivery.

It's unfortunate because the stability of the Clubhouse app is far better than Twitter Spaces. A group I'm with has spent promoting events and it's embarrassing and annoying to have the Twitter Space unexpectedly end for everyone if the app of the "host" crashes.

I remember seeing a JS/HTML5/browser version a couple years back. How feasible is it to port this to WASM now?
Re:Turn your Android phone into SMS API gateway on Tuesday August 10, 2021 @06:09PM (#28135331)
Same here but could it be that we have very old GV accounts that are not updated in some kind of number portability database?
Re:QNAP ships NAS backup software with hidden credentials on Friday April 30, 2021 @12:28AM (#26989828)
I was close to getting a QNAP as they are cheaper than a Synology. My use case is storing home security camera footage.

Currently, I have an old PC running Linux with software RAID. My motivation to switching to an appliance was power consumption and heat/noise. I live in a tropical country so I can't get away with passive cooling. Due to dust build up, the Intel Celeron CPU and motherboard broke down.

It's been replaced with an AMD Athlon. My plan was to replace the entire setup with an appliance NAS the next time it breaks down. I'm now hoping it will last long enough that an ARM-based CPU solution will work out. My top candidate is the ROCKPro64.

Re:Ask HN: Why do VoIP vendors hate their customers? on Tuesday August 11, 2020 @12:21AM (#24117127)
Lots of dinosaurs. Old enterprise/corporate thinking. Source: I'm employed by a VoIP vendor.
Yeah, when I was looking for AnyBar once before, I kept bumping into BitBar.
Re:Ask HN: Curious to know if people still use IRC? on Tuesday December 03, 2019 @11:57AM (#21694083)
This is what I do - my formula is GNU Screen and regular SSH (this old dog can't learn new tricks)
Re:Blizzard's Weibo Account Just Posted an Apology To China on Wednesday October 09, 2019 @03:25PM (#21206930)
I doubt that a Chinese citizen is willing to risk imprisonment or a dent in their social credit score for this.
Re:Raspberry Pi 4 on Monday June 24, 2019 @06:19PM (#20269119)
My plex isn't on a Pi but I do not have this issue with Roku Express as a player. Could be other factors like the video codec and direct stream is set on Roku.
I do not have very valuable feedback but I've used Termius on the iPad twice when my laptop wasn't available (both emergencies). I haven't found the need to look elsewhere for an iOS SSH client. Great work and good luck!
Re:Design flaw behind MacBook Pro’s “stage light” effect on Wednesday January 23, 2019 @01:08AM (#18976058)
The worst part of this is it's not replaceable. I have a mid-2011 MBP still running in great condition. Its flaw is the HDD SATA flex cable that is prone to break which is replaceable and available on Amazon.
Re:Airbnb and security camera disclosure on Wednesday January 16, 2019 @11:02AM (#18921948)
We have two properties listed on Airbnb and have been a "superhost" for half a year.

Our listing has extra fees if there are more than 2 people booking and there have been a number of instances where guests would sneak in extra people.

We got a security camera for one of our listings recently. It's an attached suite with a private entrance. The camera is installed outside and it's disclosed with a check box toggled in Airbnb's listing settings.

Being a private person myself, I would not put a camera inside spaces meant private for guests. In these times, I'm even a bit wary on adding a CO alarm because guests might think it's a spy camera.

Obviously, not everyone has the same standards. The host described in the post is quite rude. I wouldn't communicate that way with a guest. Hopefully, Airbnb will reopen the case given the attention it has received.

>Agreed, this seems like a blatant attempt at co-oping the empowerment movement in order to boost their bottom line.

Exactly this.

On a side note, where can I get more information about the Osé (e.g. prototype, demo video)?

Re:Brain.fm: Music to improve focus, meditation and sleep on Wednesday November 21, 2018 @01:59PM (#18505064)
They did a Reddit AMA that didn't do so well with regards to their paper and the research grant.

https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/85svjd/i_am_the_ceo_o...

I used it a couple of times before but it didn't work so well on me. Sometimes I tune to lofi streams on YouTube which work for me.

I used to use ownCloud. Just curious - why is it not in your list of alternatives? Did the project die?
Re:Firefox is back. It's time to give it a try on Wednesday June 20, 2018 @10:49PM (#17361700)
I remember XUL. Not a fan but it's sad it didn't take off. We need an Electron alternative.
In the Philippines there's something quite similar called Galleon. They've been recently acquired but I think they might be open to partner. They've expanded to Thailand, if I'm not mistaken.
But they're moving to Electron which I wish packed lighter.
Re:Offline Google Forms, finally on Sunday June 18, 2017 @11:01AM (#14580920)
Does it support all of Google Form's features? Even when sign in is required?
Re:My Family’s Slave on Thursday May 18, 2017 @02:54AM (#14365319)
This is heartbreaking but it is well written. I'm born and raised in the Philippines and still here. There are still a lot of people here who hire maids or domestic helpers with very low pay and no benefits such as healthcare. My family used to have domestic helpers as well.

Slave is not the term but the employer is usually referred to as the "master" ("amo" in Filipino).

The practice is seeded deeply into the culture and society. It will probably need generations before this thinking is changed. Some see it is a way to "help" those from the countryside with little to no education to be employed.

It's easy to spot - go to an upscale mall and spot a young couple with kids. There's a good chance they will have a young nanny that's underpaid, overworked and may be badly treated.

Re:Reverse Engineering Apple Location Services Protocol on Thursday May 11, 2017 @07:55AM (#14315341)
Great work! Looking for something similar for AirPlay.
The largest ISP here in the Philippines does the same thing. Is this some sort of new feature with carrier grade routers?
They do make right hand drive cars. I've seen one in Hong Kong.
Re:Fare Hacking on BART on Monday July 25, 2016 @12:28AM (#12156471)
Reminds me of a time in Hong Kong when I accompanied a friend buy or trade used games at the train station. We were outside of the paid area and the other guy was inside the paid area of the concourse. It seems to be common practice there.
Lived in Shenzhen, Southern China for a year in tech. Most foreigners I met there were either English teachers or in trading.

I come from Southeast Asia so the treatment is different (white privilege is extremely beneficial). Xenophobia is next to none. I managed to join a Chinese football/soccer team and badminton group.

I didn't apply for the job in China on purpose so can't help you on that. The difficulty of obtaining a visa sits on polar opposites. If your employer is a legit and big organization, you can get a legit one.

Others I met in Shenzhen just went with a business visa good for 30 days. This worked fine in this city since you can simply take a train to Hong Kong and reset your stay. Get a passport with more pages if you plan to do this.

Culture - most Chinese are very tolerant or don't care at all. I've heard other people say that Chinese are rude/impolite. You get used to it or get too tired of it.

Re:Koel: A personal music streaming server on Tuesday December 15, 2015 @01:26AM (#10736293)
Last.fm worked well with me in terms of music discovery. They kept shooting themselves in the foot, removing features where I found value and terminated my subscription (living outside US/UK).
Re:Niantic Labs splitting from Google on Thursday August 13, 2015 @12:18PM (#10055293)
A source inside Niantic hinted something to do with 3D, not sure if it's related to Project Tango. Target release is the same time on the next event series (Oct-ish 2015). Some employees that I know were originally Googlers chose to stay with Google.

I do hope Niantic Labs finds more success in this move.
