Re:Suggest to HN: D A R K M O D E on Friday December 13, 2019 @04:30PM (#21785708)
The crazy thing is that people are suggesting things that should simply be added on as a function of the site. It's 2019, Dark mode is here to stay, why not just add it natively instead of having to install yet another plug-in/add-in/extension?

Suggest to HN: D A R K M O D E

Please HN, please. This is one, if not, the first site that I visit after making my coffee. The glaring white background is absolutely horrendous. Please add a dark mode feature.

I got 3 Axis cameras, they are great. Luckily they were gifted to me as it would have run me several thousand dollars to purchase myself.
I had some issues with ZM so ended up going with Shinobi, they are pretty new to the FOSS security system space but so far I'm liking it a lot.
Yeah I have to agree with this. If you're savvy enough to setup your own close-looped surveillance system then you're savvy enough to check if the camera is pinging home to a China-based server. And if it is then just block all WAN connections from that IP.
I have the same exact bag, had it for about 3 years. Still great. Got inspired by Mr. Robot and had to get one.
That's what I was digging for as well, as it's LTE based I can't imagine a consistent connection or a particularly fast connection.
Re:The Phone Company Secretly Run by Drug Traffickers on Friday October 25, 2019 @11:29AM (#21355959)
Gotta love vice: >Motherboard identified an MPC employee thanks to those company database records, web domain information, and the business card. Two sources confirmed this person’s role in the company, with both saying he acted as a “frontman” for The Brothers. When reached for comment via email, the frontman asked Motherboard “[Where] did you hear about MPC.” He did not respond to a series of follow-up emails or messages. Motherboard is not naming the person as they have not previously been named in media reports, and to minimize any potential harm or retaliation against the individual for being identified.

So you're telling us how to find out who this person is..

Re:Swedish police may soon be allowed surveillance via trojans on Thursday October 24, 2019 @07:50PM (#21350356)
How do they plan on loading up an iphone or android phone with a 'trojan'? This seems to be more an excuse to get police some sort of excuse to be able to snoop even more than what they currently can.
Re:We moved our servers to Iceland on Friday October 18, 2019 @04:01PM (#21294615)
I see a lot of scrutiny in the comments, but the simple fact is that they are actively trying to secure their users data to whatever extent they can. This shows a great form of care from a company and pushes me as a consumer to use them. Yes Iceland has had reports of letting the US pull drives before. No I wouldn't think to plant my servers in Iceland. But the fact that they are considering all of this is a big big + in my opinion.

Most countries who have INTL fiber cables running in/out of them will have a direct link to a "surveillance" country, but as long as encryption is sufficient then the data is still relatively secure. and pulling RAM to inspect the memory is a pretty hard thing to get away from.

I think this is as thoughtful as it gets when considering user and company privacy.

Gotta love that the article has 0 mentions of the main cause: Vitamin E being added to the solution alongside THC oil. This is the sole reason, not nicotine, nor PG/VG.
Re:Science’s pirate queen on Friday September 27, 2019 @08:03PM (#21097375)
This is kind of disrespectful to Aaron Swartz:

>Headlines reduced her to a female Aaron Swartz

This technology has been posted on HN before and the comments were all too similar to this one. I understand why a lot of people are falling into the FUD-hole, but we can pretty easily solve the issues mentioned in the comments by inserting a digital key - similar to a SSL certificate, into an image/video upon initial upload. Or even upon creation, maybe using some sort of ledger to verify integrity. I'm not too worried.
Not good, but not terrible.
Every parent scared to death of finding out their kid is vaping should ask themselves this: What if they were using actual cigarettes, or god forbid Vanilla cream flavored vodka.

Sensationalism is cancer.

How the heck would a TSA agent know the difference
Running nmap against a network might be illegal depending on the country that you're in.
Re:My Last Macbook Pro on Tuesday July 16, 2019 @06:09PM (#20454336)
at that point - get a cheap windows machine that can remote-into your mac, why deal with the nightmare, over and over again?
That's a huge part of reddits charm for me.
Re:It’s Time for Caps Lock to Die on Tuesday July 09, 2019 @04:31PM (#20396261)
Agreed, there are many things "wrong" with modern PC's, I don't think caps lock is one of them. I personally don't 'fly to close to the sun' and miss entire sentences of all-caps, because I don't look down when I type, I look at my screen.

Easier to just re-map the key to something useful than to adjust a whole industry to a single opinion.

Will there be a win/linux version?
As a tech-reviewer I'd assume OP to be more tech-savvy than your average shmoe, yet they kept ALL (literally all) Finanical and generally sensitive information in a central location that easily breached (G-drive) and to top it off used 2FA through SMS for many of their services. If anything this article only discredits the author of any common sense in the tech-space.
Re:Ask HN: Do you like working in San Francisco? on Friday June 14, 2019 @07:57PM (#20187621)
A couple of things I like about the Bay Area:

It's gorgeous; We get cold winters and hot summers with a nice inbetween for spring/fall.

I enjoy the drives (out of rush hour) and the many, many things you can get to easily outside of the city.

Well paid and pay about $1200 for a 3 bedroom with one room mate (Outlier I know) right across the GGB.

Things I dislike:

The traffic into the city is disgustingly bad.

A lot of elitism going around based on worth/employer/general status.

Too many got-damn people have moved here in the last 10 years.

advice: If you have a really well-paying offer, then jump on it, get an electric bike for the steep hills, and enjoy your time here.

Misleading title, a better title would be: How I bypassed 2FA Rate-limits with an HTTP Header.

Valve getting into the AR industry? Neat.
Re:I stole £30,000 from my mum to make millions on Tuesday February 12, 2019 @07:01PM (#19149010)
Yeah it does here: >Amazingly it worked. "By the end of the month we had enough clients and money to pay for the internet line and the advertising," says Andrew.

And just as importantly, his mother forgave him for the subterfuge.

The only thing I see that didn't get through was "There was one “Paid for” disclosure that Facebook didn’t approve in our latest test. They denied, just a couple minutes after we submitted it: Mark Zuckerberg."

Where do you see that?

I use head and shoulders, and was 100% certain they were on the list. Relieved yet disappointed.

Etcher might be the single greatest flash2disk tool out there. I'm 100% in love with it. Whatever name you guys go with, I'm behind it.
