It may be partly due to how awful Angular v1 was. I know it put a bad taste in my mouth when I had to use it. But we stuck with it and things got way better with v2+.

Well said. I appreciate people on both sides that can simply acknowledge having kids is great for some people, and not having them is great for others, and the world is big enough for all of us.

> You’d think by your thirties you’d do some basic research.

I've often had thoughts like this, but had to just accept that people often don't do basic research. For another example, consider how many people work full-time (160+ hours per month) to make money, but have never bothered to take even a 2-hour course on how to manage it well. They spend all that time making money but no time on how to use it wisely. And then they make obvious mistakes. Unnecessary debt, lack of investments, complain that they never learned this stuff in school, etc. Not trying to sound judgmental, but I always found that surprising.

Re:How to improve your WFH lighting to reduce eye strain on Tuesday January 28, 2025 @10:48PM (#42861301)
Yep, I use IPS monitors for this reason. Gotta avoid PWM to help prevent the headaches I experienced on other types. IPS looks really good too, so that works out.
For a few years I was hoping someone would create something like this, or I’d eventually do it myself. Thank you!

> Including third part stuff such as Cordova and Ionic that have more or less stopped development?

FYI - Ionic is in active development, along with Capacitor, their replacement of Cordova.

I recently updated my app’s target to the new Google guidelines and Capacitor made it easy with an automated cli.

One important difference is that in retail, you had to deal with it, or risk losing your job / getting written up. In volunteering, if someone is being a jerk to you then you can call them out on it. And I think it is less likely you’ll run into a jerk when you’re volunteering. It’s not like working at Walmart.
Re:I Fixed a Parasitic Drain on My Car in 408 Days on Wednesday April 12, 2023 @01:19PM (#35543252)
Our 1990 Miata has a parasitic drain too. We installed a battery disconnect switch that takes about 5 seconds to connect or disconnect whenever we use the car. It's a little bit of an extra hassle, but it was an easy solution.

Judging from the tone of his comments, he appears to be a troll.
I get where you were coming from but corrupt lawyers landed my handicapped brother in an unlicensed group home where he was mistreated and soon died. Lawyers can absolutely kill you.

Re:My students cheated... a lot on Sunday May 29, 2022 @07:14PM (#31553801)
Agreed they have a brand to protect and that we shouldn't expect much from any university that could be described as a diploma mill.

Though I'm not confident that A-list schools are any better at curbing the cheating than an average university.

Just looking at some of the replies in this thread from people who were students and TAs at A-list schools, and from other conversations I've seen about this, they describe that cheating is rampant at prestigious schools too.

Re:My students cheated... a lot on Sunday May 29, 2022 @10:50AM (#31549570)
Which is amusing since students from those A-list schools are also cheating.

The car loan line was a little odd. Anyone with a decent income and a high credit score can easily get a car loan.
Taking care of a baby is not like this.

> a feeling at the core of my psyche that I have been wasting time and there must be something productive I should be doing or thinking about.

It's a little bit of relief to hear that others have experienced this issue. I've had this feeling when playing a video game, reading a book, watching a movie, etc. As if a part of my mind has trained itself to believe that the only worthwhile pursuit must be "productive" in some way. I've had to teach/remind myself often that it's healthy to relax, so keep playing. I think it's starting to sink in over time. :)

A friend mentioned this to me the other day and I think it's a cool piece of Internet history. It's still operational and I wonder how many people are using it. The fee is $15.95 per month. It has an associated YouTube channel from a few years ago: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrF0GuFv5Rgc2M8llAeMdEg
Re:You're a Slave to Money, Then You Die on Monday April 13, 2020 @12:45AM (#22853245)
The S&P 500 has been a solid investment, historically speaking, even with the black swan events. It has more than tripled since 2009, and doubled since 2007 (before the 2008 drop). And with dividends it's even better.

This idea that black swan events keep knocking out all the gains just isn't true, looking at the numbers. But if you don't like stocks, buying real estate and renting it out is also a good option.

I had similar thoughts. Another example: the illustrations on the home page are pretty, but they're using terms like "elements", "selectors", "classes". A true beginner has no idea what these are.

I take it these were just a sample that was taken from one of the lessons, but I wonder if there are better beginner-friendly illustrations to start off with on the landing page.

Just a minor suggestion. Otherwise, this looks like a great resource!

After the third or fourth click, did it cross your mind to type in "news.ycombinator.com" instead? Or did you just want to see how deep the rabbit hole goes? :)

Re:Dell XPS 13 Review from a lifelong Mac user on Thursday June 14, 2018 @02:47PM (#17314284)
I also have the XPS and have experienced my WiFi dropping. Usually a few times a week. I've heard you can contact Dell support and they will send you a wifi adapter but I haven't tried it yet myself. Curious to hear of specific replacement options too.
Thanks for the response. Sometimes I get the impression that engineers are killing themselves doing nothing but work with occasional sleep, so it's good to hear you're around 45 hours.
Are these engineers at Facebook/Google/etc. working the typical 40 hour work week or more like 60-80?
Honest question since I'm not familiar with the area - who is making 400k at Microsoft or Facebook? Not the typical mid-level software engineer, I'd assume. Are these product leads or head engineers making the 400k?
Forums are still a thing. Maybe not as much as they used to be, but the communities are out there. I've met several people from IGN's forum. And I've heard of many meetups in subreddits.

I agree with you though. The Internet is not "special" like it used to be when it was new. Now it's just another normal everyday thing, like the radio and TV... And full of ads.

Check out IndieHackers. It's a great community of bootstrapping developers, which sounds like what you're looking for.
I imagine it's less about the number -- her age -- and more about her maturity and personality. I think your approach would work well, though she may need wider access to Google search results when doing homework.
Re:Derek Sivers: Books I've Read on Friday March 16, 2018 @11:29AM (#16601307)
I agree many books in the self-help genre are basically just "motivational porn", but I wouldn't dismiss all of them. I have read some self-help books that gave me genuine insights that I have put into successful practice with real effects.
Python is the typical recommendation I see for beginner and able to use on Web.
