It's only unhealthy for your career at that specific employer. Fortunately for tech workers in the Western hemisphere, you can always move between employers
Promotions are for schmucks. One can easily get a promotion from the free market when their boss refuses to give it to them

Ask HN: Is this behavior disrespecting our profession?

I've observed a concerning trend on LinkedIn lately that warrants a discussion within our profession. It appears that individuals with relatively minimal experience, typically in the range of 2 to 4 years, are increasingly adopting the title of "Senior Software Engineer." This practice is concering, as it may dilute the significance and respect associated with the senior designation within our...

For running applications in production, Alpine Linux is harmful and should be avoided. Getting a smaller container image is not worth trading mucl for glibc.
He was referring to sandboxing in terms of not polluting the installed packages/libraries on the server and not from a security perspective. But even from a security perspective, there are solutions to this problem like running containers as an unprivileged user using podman.
The utility of an air fryer. If you don't have one, you should buy one immediately. You will not regret it.

I think it's really easy to claim to be socially and environmentally conscious (especially nowadays with social media), but when you are faced with a scenario where your principles and values are put to the test, the decision you make reveals just how important to you those principles and values really are.

Ask HN: How has Diversity and Inclusion programs impacted your company?

At my current employer, the D&I program has resulted in the hiring of a lot more white women and barely any underrepresented minorities (URMs)[0]. I have experienced myself and heard from colleagues that referrals of URM candidates were rejected in favor of less qualified white women. It seems white women are the main benefactors of D&I programs just as they were for affirmative...

Indonesia has the largest population of Muslims in the world[1]. It is a Muslim country, but it is not governed by Sharia law, so it's not an Islamic country.

Have you tried applying for remote jobs?
This is why GCP has no hope of ever taking significant market share from AWS. Google thinks they can treat their cloud customers like they treat users of their free services. Customer support and communication are essential.

Yet another JavaScript project reinventing the wheel and badly at that. It seems the NodeJS community suffers from NIH syndrome more than others. This is a sign of lack of seniors and leadership.
Re:Ask HN: What do you wear to work everyday? on Friday December 01, 2017 @10:58AM (#15824583)
Whatever my mind desires. Workplaces that enforce a dress code in 2017 are not worth your time. We're all adults and can make our own decisions.

Wait, they honestly asked you about the education level of your siblings? This is the most SVesque thing I've heard all year.
What percentage of millennials even understand Bitcoin? How many of us on HN are frequently asked about investing in cryptocurrencies by people who have no business approaching the topic.

Going serverless would increase your costs significantly. Have you seen how much AWS charges for Lambda use? Where did this myth of serverless saving you money come from?
I don't appreciate or value art at all.

This sounds cool, but it's needlessly complicated. Why not simply configure SSH to use multiple forms of authentication [1]: password + public key auth + 2FA (Duo Security, Google Authenticator, Authy, etc.). That's all you need to achieve a very secure state.

If there is a gross lack of diversity within your company and you routinely use "culture fit" as an excuse to turn down PoC candidates, what conclusion can be drawn about your organization?

Re:Ask HN: Do recruiters lose out by requiring a degree? on Friday October 27, 2017 @07:15PM (#15573013)
We are extremely fortunate today to have resources that enable one to independently study the entire contents of a CS degree in the fraction of time on their own schedule. Pursuing a CS degree while actively employed in the field is a foolish waste of money.

Google is forward thinking? This is the same company that requested not only college, but highschool GPA and SAT scores from applicants and whose interview process is entirely textbook algorithm questions.
Re:Ask HN: Where should I work: Facebook or Google? on Friday October 20, 2017 @09:42AM (#15515661)
Neither. Work for a company that generates revenue by not encroaching on the privacy of every human being on Earth.

> fewer than 1 percent of start-ups end up as $1 billion companies

Not every company needs to achieve a billion dollar evaluation. This eat-the-world mentality is incredibly toxic. An an entrepreneur one should be satisfied with making tens of millions in revenue, but of course you can't stop there when VCs are involved.

Like you I would never bring a device like this into my home. The issue is they are becoming normalized and mainstream adoption is growing at an alarming rate. What happens when you can't purchase a home appliance without these "features" and it refuses to work without connecting to your wireless network and being able to phone home?
