Its a great little tool. I have been using it for a over a year now and it simplifies the dev environment issues by sandboxing it. In general, it allows you to isolate your development servers and other such programs and libraries in a sandbox. You can use the editors, browsers etc on your local machine however the servers and other heavy lifting can be done by the vm in the sandbox env. I think this is still bleeding edge stuff as I dont see very many developers using this. Would love to hear experiences of fellow hackers.
One question - I use vagrant with VirtualBox as the provider. Has any body used vagrant with the VMware provider. Wondering if one sees better performance on vmware than virtualbox. Specially when you are running everything (host and guest) on the same hdd.
Employers will always have the upper hand because in the western world discussing/knowing salaries of peers is considered taboo( I never understood this as somebody who comes from the east where asking friends and peers their salary is very normal). Level the playing field. Discuss your salary more openly and you will see things get fairer( if that's a word). Not all will make the same but you will get to what you deserve very quickly. It also helps by letting you get an idea of what you need to do to get to the next level. Would love to hear the communities thoughts on this somewhat contrarian view.
Do you see any performance issues. How long have you been using this setup ? Just wondering if the SSD's on the air can handle the extra I/O without shortening its life drastically.

Looking to see what tools the community use to do development on os x1) Develop as is on os x by directly installing various tools and apis on the machine
2) Using virtual box - VHD on same HDD as where OS X is installed.
3) Using virtual box - VHD on storage other than main HDD where OS X is installed
4) Using Vagrant - VHD on same HDD as where OS X is installed
5) Using Vagrant - VHD on...

When we see todays enterprise IT products, you get a feeling of being transported back to the 90s, old stodgy corporations ripe with bureaucracy moving at a snails pace when compared to the products churned out by todays small agile technology startups. How do we bring enterprise technology to the 21st century.

Its been now close to a decade and half since I have been working with software development and I feel like there are new trends that while I have heard of, I dont have a working knowledge of. A decade ago, when I was starting out and when I met older people in technology, I saw that they held on to what they learned early on and there was a gap in their working knowledge - of things they knew...
Good point. Your comment about being face in the crowd is similar to the gut feeling I had. I guess the question now becomes how does one really start a professional services business (read I'd like to have a business where I can help other businesses migrate to the cloud, which I think can be a viable service business)

My objective is to work for myself and eventually turn that into a sustainable business, but I am having a hard time trying to figure out what exactly are the next steps in order to move towards my objective. My current perspective is one of trying to find a idea for a product or service as starting point. Do I need a different perspective ? or Just not thinking hard enough on what product or...

I would like to look into starting a business and cant really think of any products to start off with. I feel offering businesses implement solutions can be a start as I am using my technical and business skills and then if I can see a need for a product I could eventually develop it. Worse case just continue running a solutions business. To that effect how good are the partner programs that...

Hi HN,One of my goals this year is to increase my income by 30-50K. I am currently employed full time and am looking for guidance from the thoughtful and capable HN community on ways to do that. I can code and design. I have been part of a small team running a startup and have worn many hats on the technology and client facing sides. My biggest strength is to be able bridge business and...

I am facing a problem of managing our photos and videos. The problem is me and my wife take photos and video using our 2 iPhones, 1 iPad, 1 canon DSLR and 1 Fuji Point and Shoot and then find ourselves looking for pictures in various devices. Also as a result we have no physical pictures because all the photos are scattered in different places and have not been consolidated. I am sure other...

Lots of sites offer to avoid creating accounts with them and instead allow you to sign in with yor google or Facebook account. For eg Flickr. If I were to sign up for flickr using my google id what am I giving up in return for the convinence of not having to create a separate Flickr account. How much privacy am I giving up ? Given a sign up choice website specific account vs google/Facebook...
Really !! AT&T will do that for free without giving me trouble ? If so that would be fantastic.

We got two iPhone 3GS' in Aug 2009. Both phones work fine just that they are slow. I would like to get new phones but hate the fact that I have to throw these away. What have other people done ?

I use gmail and over the years have accumulated a lot of mails. Some that I'd like to keep and some that I'd like to get rid off. The Issue is that I have about 5000 emails and going one by one is not an option. I would like to know if there are any tools that will allow me to mine my inbox orif there is a better way to deal with the problem of having a big inbox, because if the size of the...
I have the same question but seems like its free and anybody can go. Gary's blog does not post any restrictions either.
Agreed on the salivation and the opportunity in terms of a dream job. But to think that just because the data science team thinks more about social science than Facebook prOducts the corporation will change its tune and stop being creepy is naive or myopic at best.
What Facebook knows: too much.
What it has: too much squared.
More and more os x and the Mac "platform" is moving towards a becoming a crystal prison. They are still the undisputed leader when it comes to quality hardware. But locking down the os and hardware is not going to he good in the long run. I knew this was. I in that's why I got the 17 inch mbp in feb. figured I can have it last for a few more years as can upgrade the ram an hdd to a ssd giving it more life. If the os becomes restrictive then I can always install Linux or windows on the quality hardware.
Well one argument against it is privacy. by companies zeroing in on the source of the information and coupled with critical mass consumers don't really have a choice unless being a total outcast. Between apple and Facebook they know a lot about you and your habits in return for giving you a place to upload pictures and throw cows at your friends. Besides the occaisonal desIre to voyeur.
From a business perspective the platform gives an opportunity to use InfOrmation creatively and develop products and sell them. I don't see how such a personal information based business model can sustain for two decades unless it's ok for us as a society to live as a statistic because of the sheer amont of data that has been created and analyzed on individuals and groups.

Does any body see any issues with that? Things could be worse from a privacy perspective: a Facebook OS. But the bigger question is is this the right direction for us as a society ? Is this the right direction for capitalism. The argument should be looked from both sides.

Most of my experiance Is with a startup. About a good 7 years. It wast not successfull in the traditional sense(no exit). After that I have been managing a small team of developers as a product development lead. I am looking to make a move and want to do something like produc management. What's the best way to do that. What other options do I have. Thx
Thanks Man ! Will learn a few new commands as well.

I am curious to find out what files are being installed and where on my hdd when I install a program on my HDD. I am wondering if there is a way to start a 'monitor' before the installer runs such that it will show hdd/filesystem activity and that will show what new files/directories were created and which existing ones were touched modified.Atleast in Windows, I knew where the files were...
