Yes, familymoviedb.com. It's a side project. Have not had any copyright complaints so far. The question at hand here is completely unrelated...

Essentially just looking to have my own VPN and not have to rely on a VPN-as-a-service (e.g. ExpressVPN, SurfSharkVPN, Mullvad, etc, etc).

Thanks for the recommendations! I've added them to my list of considerations...

Good point. Updated the criteria to "no/fewest".

Having anonymous login and crypto as a payment option seems it would go a long way here...

Ask HN: What are good VPS options for running private VPNs?

Which VPS providers can you suggest that work well for running private VPNs (for proxying internet traffic)?CRITERIA- Affordable :: Relatively, at least on par with the better VPN services.. no more than $10-$15/month- Worry-free bandwidth allowance :: Not necessarily "unlimited" but enough to prevent worrying about running out- No/Fewest privacy concerns :: Business and server location should...

Re:How do you find side projects? on Thursday October 31, 2024 @01:06AM (#42003665)
Build something you wish existed. Simple as that.

Even if it already exists but there are things about it that annoy you (and others), build a better version (competitor).

I'm trying to decide whether to do this same thing or try and keep all of the "backend" parts in Cloudflare Workers (Pages Functions) and other "serverless" options (such as Turso for the DB).
Recently learned about https://coolify.io (as another option that seems worth considering).
Re:Ask HN: How do you manage registrar login? on Wednesday July 03, 2024 @09:33PM (#40871643)
Interesting question.

Curious also if there's any practical approach for this (guessing there's not).

While looking for similar projects I also learned about https://coolify.io/ (from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCIfWhAheVw).

Coming from Netlify/Vercel/etc this seems like it could be a better option.

What are the reasons you use both a self-hosted VPS running CapRover and Cloudflare Pages?
LOL! Love the spirit of this... (though most likely won't go this route)

Ask HN: How to architect the back end for my side project (Family Movie DB)?

Working on a side project: Family Movie DB (familymoviedb.com)Currently it's a simple static site (built with Astro) served via Cloudflare Pages. The next phase of the project is to add user accounts to support the following:- Staring a movie- Marking a movie as "watched"- Creating movie lists- Customizing the weights used for the site's scoring algo (the "FMDb score") (because some families...

Hadn't heard of pockethost before.

Recently learned about https://www.convex.dev/ which seems worth consideration.

How do you prevent issues with potential traffic spikes and such (with running 10 services on a single instance) (this is probably a dumb question... most of my experience is on the frontend)?
Hosting and database?
Recently learned bout CapRover... Curious if you would ever consider the "bare VPS" route after having used it or if it (or something like it) has become essential.
Database?

Ask HN: Are you leaving Cloudflare over the recent drama?

I've seen lots of bad PR for Cloudflare recently (at least on YouTube and X). Seems to be related to poor-form sales tactics (lure in users for cheap and later require they up their plan or close their account). And indeed, the stories I'm seeing are pretty shocking and certainly hurt my perception of the company. This is seriously making me reconsider Cloudflare as the primary service I use...

Re:HN RSS feeds per user no longer available on Sunday October 22, 2023 @07:46PM (#37980103)
How do you consume your RSS?

It's always been something i've felt like i'd benefit from but have never found an app/workflow that works for me.

Do tools like OptinMonster annoy you?

Personally they drive me nuts. Especially the "exit intent" popups. If I want to close my tab, don't try to stop me (right?).Consider the real-world equivalent... You're in a store, decide to leave, start to push open the door, someone slams it shut (preventing you from leaving), then they start waving a coupon in your face and blathering all sorts of marketing talk. How would you react? Why is...

Which "Ocean Next"?

I see:

- Material Ocean Next

- Ocean Next Extended

- React Ocean Next Extended

- React Ocean Next Extended - Italic

But no standalone "Ocean Next"

Oh, right, this is helpful to keep in mind.

Oh, nice. Will be testing out this one.

Oh, interesting. Do you find that it takes a period of time after switching before your eyes become accustomed to the change (from a quick-code-readability perspective)?

> Some themes work better with one language than the other.

Yeah, this is the most annoying part for me.

I remember reading a post a long time ago praising the benefits of not using syntax highlighting while coding (I'm not sure, but it may have been this one: https://www.linusakesson.net/programming/syntaxhighlighting/). Not sure if I could ever get used to not having syntax highlighting, but so much of what I like/dislike about themes revolves around syntax highlighting... perhaps it's worth testing for a period of time with syntax highlighting disabling (I assume this is even possible?).
