Re:Airbnb’s Battle to Stay Private on Wednesday February 07, 2018 @10:44AM (#16325157)
This is the first time I've heard of either VRBO or HomeAway. I assume they have a much smaller presence.
Re:How Blockchain Could Kill Both Cable and Netflix on Monday January 29, 2018 @11:26AM (#16258381)
I fail to see what advantage this holds over YouTube.
Re:Walkable Streets Are More Economically Productive on Thursday January 18, 2018 @11:46AM (#16178533)
I'm not sure I understand. The jobs are in the city, correct?
Re:Walkable Streets Are More Economically Productive on Thursday January 18, 2018 @11:32AM (#16178391)
Interesting, what would incentivize people to live there, as opposed to the city?
Re:The brains of jazz and classical pianists work differently on Tuesday January 16, 2018 @02:16PM (#16161270)
Very true that rhythm plays a huge role in jazz.

Although, I'm not sure that I agree that dynamics and tone aren't as important in jazz.

This makes sense, one is far more focused on precise articulation of a prepared score, while the other is focused (in large part) on improvisation.
Re:The Death of a Civil Servant on Friday January 12, 2018 @01:45PM (#16135221)
I wonder if the title is deliberately evocative of Anton Chekhov's 'The Death of a Government Clerk'. http://centerforfiction.org/forwriters/the-model-short-story...
Re:Ask HN: Do you play games between programming? on Tuesday January 09, 2018 @04:04PM (#16110047)
I try to create a defined line between 'work time' and 'play time', otherwise the latter begins to eclipse the former.

That being said, when that line blurs, I enjoy Crypt of the Necrodancer.

Re:Instagram Has an Animal Abuse Problem on Tuesday January 09, 2018 @04:02PM (#16110027)
I wonder what incentive causes Instagram to remove pornography so aggressively, while ignoring gore/animal cruelty?
Re:Microsoft says security patches slowing down PCs, servers on Tuesday January 09, 2018 @03:44PM (#16109866)
> Meltdown and Spectre are two memory corruption flaws that could allow hackers to bypass operating systems and other security software to steal passwords or encryption keys on most types of computers, phones and cloud-based servers.

What a terrible explanation of Meltdown and Specter.

Re:Ujet: High tech connected electric scooter on Tuesday January 09, 2018 @02:12PM (#16108838)
It looks neat, but what makes it better than a normal moped?

I really want to see Crystal succeed. I don't really understand why there aren't more languages like it with clean syntax and good type inference.

Right now the only things keeping me from using it for everything are a lack of libraries, and it's sub-par GC.

I would be concerned that this tool would also flag users who oppose these groups. What if someone posts a picture of a man holding a Nazi flag with the intention on identifying/calling out the person, and is then banned?
Re:Firefox 57.0 Released on Tuesday November 14, 2017 @09:10AM (#15695066)
It's worth noting that most legacy extensions still actually work. You just need to enable them.

Someone only read the headline.
Re:Quora is down on Wednesday August 30, 2017 @09:17PM (#15137423)
I'm generally pretty out-of-touch when it comes to social media/app trends (I finally made an Instagram account this year). What exactly is Quora? It seems like Yahoo answers, but people seem to give it more respect.
Exactly, capitalism working as intended.
But that wouldn't affect the ratio of employee wage to executive wage. Lobbying/bribing would increase the company's total profit.
What sort of collusion would increase their wages?
Isn't this capitalism working exactly as intended?
I'm much a proponent of automation as anyone else. But I think right now Google is trying to do something way too hard. By looking for "extremist" material, they are basically trying to determine the intention of a video. How can you expect an AI to do that?
Isn't this basically anarcho-syndicalism?
Re:How to Write a Song on Monday August 14, 2017 @03:24PM (#15011874)
Should perhaps be titled: "How to Write an American Indie-Rock Song". There's a lot to the world of composing outside of acoustic guitar and verse-chorus-verse.
Re:Tabs, spaces and your salary – how is it really? on Tuesday June 20, 2017 @11:45AM (#14595489)
What do you mean? If some devs are using spaces, and some tabs, wont that create pretty unpleasant whitespace differences?
