Re:Ask HN: How to set up get-shit-done app? on Friday May 06, 2011 @03:18AM (#2520256)
Cool. It works. The only thing is, when I type "sudo ./get-shit-done work" I get this error: sh: /etc/init.d/networking: No such file or directory

Why? Solution?

Ask HN: How to set up get-shit-done app?

I'm a designer, and not too familiar with the command line.I'd like to setup the get-shit-done (https://github.com/leftnode/get-shit-done) program on my mac. But I don't know what this means: "After cloning this repository, put it in your $PATH and ensure it is executable."I'd be grateful if one of you could outline the steps...

Ask PG: Disconnecting Distraction progress?

I just reread Disconnectinb Distraction and saw this:Note: The strategy described at the end of this essay didn’t work. It would work for a while, and then I’d gradually find myself using the Internet on my work computer. I’m trying other strategies now, but I think this time I’ll wait till I’m sure they work before writing about them.1) Thank you for the openness and honesty. It's somehow...

Ask HN: Textmate and RoR?

Yesterday I bought textmate. Today I'm starting to learn Rails. How should I set up (and what should I know about) textmate to make things as easy and fast as possible?

Ask HN: PHP to RoR, dreamhost to what?

I've been writing PHP and hosting everything on dreamhost for about a year. I just started learning Ruby/Rails today. I'd like to change my host to something that will (1) support both Rails and PHP and (2) scale easily if any of my future projects happen to gain traction.Which do you recommend? (I've heard both AWS and Heroku mentioned, but have no clue otherwise.)

Ask HN: Transitioning from small projects to...

larger, more broadly used websites?I'm a designer/developer. I've launched several small web apps, for myself and for friends. But they have all been the type of sites that just a few people might visit on a given day, and almost never concurrently.I want to start coding bigger, better things, with many more users. What do I need to learn to do this, if anything? (I typically employ HTML/CSS,...

Ask HN: Archive of well-designed PSDs?

I'm a coder. I can design decently, but I'm terrible at getting things looking beautiful.I've seen Dribbble (which host mostly images, not psd's) and sites like PremiumPixel which provide a few PSD's. But what I'm looking for is a large, tagged archive of "open-source" PSD's.Does this exist? If not, would you use it?

Ask HN: What would appreciate in value...

most of 300 years? For instance, if I could leave something buried beneath my home today for my great-great-great-great grandson to find, what would make him wealthiest? My current best answer: a portfolio of government bonds from all the major countries. (Or perhaps as many of the current sports cards that I can find.)

Ask HN: How to give a client a website?

I just started doing freelance web design and development. My first client already had a domain and hosting. My question, though, is what do you do when a client doesn't have either? What's the easiest way to do it?For instance, do you just setup a godaddy account for the client, and then buy the domain and hosting there?

Ask HN: Web startup trade shows?

I'm in my university's entrepreneur program. For it, I need to "attend a trade association of your industry." Are there any good web startup trade shows in southern california in the near future? (What are HN meetups like? Would those count?)

Ask HN: Why doesn't Apple...

create a Wifi-only (in other words, non-3G) iPhone? This would still be highly useful, and would likely persuade millions of cheaper folk to get iPhones.

Ask HN: Calendar Permutation Uses?

I'm thinking about making a calendar permutation web app that helps students plan their classes. It'd work like this:- Student enters filters (days and hours he doesn't want class). - Student enters classes needed. - student can flip thru the various permutations of the resulting class schedule. (Permutations happen because each class has many different times.)Now, would this idea work in any...

Ask HN: How to write great PHP code?

I've been able to hack together a few websites with PHP. But I still have no idea how to write good MVC, object-oriented code.How/where can I learn this?(Please don't say that I should pick another language. I'm fine with using PHP.)
