News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

gsiener

This is odd, given the recent news that Apple and Google just struck a rather large deal to move iCloud onto Google Cloud[1].

I suspect that if this were to become a real thing, the novelty would wear off and people would return to their old habits, right?

Check out poncho.is which launched recently from betaworks. They do this (It's warmer than yesterday) and it's been really helpful for the confused nyc seasons we're getting.
Re:Finding Unlicensed Repos on Github on Saturday April 20, 2013 @06:12PM (#5583030)
Quick plug for License Audit: http://licenseaudit.pivotallabs.com

We developed that at Pivotal Labs since we need to pay attention to licenses while working w/ our clients. Just connect your repos, add licenses to your whitelist, and get updates if you're not in compliance. Feedback welcome!

Do you support testing multiple iOS versions (e.g., 6.0, 6.0.1, etc.)?
Re:Using a Raspberry Pi as an Information Radiator on Tuesday March 19, 2013 @08:51PM (#5404807)
FYI the software behind the "information radiator" is actually something we wrote at Pivotal, Project Monitor. We open sourced it, so you can check out the repo here to get started: https://github.com/pivotal/projectmonitor/

I'm the PM so feel free to shoot any questions/complaints/feedback my way.

Re:Code Climate launches Security Monitor on Tuesday March 19, 2013 @09:59AM (#5400885)
Code Climate has been great for explaining tech debt and security to my clients. It shifts the conversation from begging for time to justifying a healthy dose of refactoring.
Re:Rails 3.2.13, 3.1.12, and 2.3.18 have been released on Monday March 18, 2013 @11:02PM (#5398658)
I had this issue as well. My hacky workaround was to add the version to the Gemfile, bundle update rails, remove the version from Gemfile, then bundle update rails again (to remove the hardcoded version in the lockfile).

Yuck.

Mixpanel actually offers this service now: http://techcrunch.com/2012/10/22/mixpanel-engage/

I've used similar, standalone services and also built my own, but I'm excited to try Mixpanels' offering because it's already integrated into the tracking.

However, without a grid feed to synchronize to, your grid-tied inverters will be useless. You'd need battery backup and a second set of DC inverters to accomplish the off-grid scenario you're referring to.
Re:Show HN: What colour is your IP address? on Monday February 18, 2013 @09:07PM (#5242168)
This would be a great bash addition for anyone that sshs into servers all day. Just as some people color their console red in production or green for staging, this would be a nice indicator of where you were.

I was shocked to find out that the node package for CentOS is not actively maintained anymore...
Re:Let's make GitHub better, together on Friday December 07, 2012 @03:23PM (#4889065)
Maybe github should use a different TLD for pages? Like Githubpages.com ?
Wow -- pleasantly surprised to see that response. Very cool to see you sharing data.
I'd say so. Considering lots of creative endeavors end up a big loss, even breaking even is a great accomplishment.
Re:The Problem with PaaS on Monday June 25, 2012 @12:02PM (#4157106)
Exactly, just came here to say that. Heroku has some serious cash and resources post-Salesforce.com acquisition, seems like they should prioritize redundancy across another provider or whatever datacenter(s) Sfdc are using.
Very cool. Reminds me of Heroku's Data Clip [1] service released as part of their Postgres as a service offering.
