i'm not sure if i can agree with you on this. if i can create a successful junk food brand like mcdonalds, i'd do it in a second.

Re:TikTok and the Sorting Hat on Tuesday August 04, 2020 @12:54PM (#24051896)
that's just plain wrong. if you even used tiktok, you'll understand how truly frighteningly powerful their algorithm is at finding exactly the kind of content you want to watch. i was never the kind of person to scroll my phone right before sleeping, but somehow i found myself doing that these days on tiktok, mindlessly just swiping up over and over again, not able to stop because almost every video seems to appeal precisely to my taste, even in the weird humor stuff.
Re:TikTok and the Sorting Hat on Tuesday August 04, 2020 @12:36PM (#24051668)
the entire TikTok India is filled with content from the lower caste. like, literally if you check out all the viral ones like the cringey indian joker, or the very popular one with the 2 really bad acting siblings, they were all shot in the slums.
Re:ByteDance investors value TikTok at $50B in takeover bid on Wednesday July 29, 2020 @06:00PM (#23992055)
there's a follow model, it's just secondary. when you log into tiktok, the first page you see is called the For You Page, where content is pushed to you algorithmically. to see the content you actually subscribed to, you'd need to swipe left.
Re:Ask HN: Is all of FAANG like this? on Thursday July 23, 2020 @08:47AM (#23926746)
i mean, it's definitely not "ethnically" wrong LOL. (ps: in case people missed it, it's ethically, not ethnically)
i mean... that's a legit theoretical concern, but so far i've bought many dirt cheap electronic products from ali for years and so far they've all worked as advertised.
man, i often hear people complain about aliexpress, i just don't understand it. i've been buying and using headscratchingly cheap products from china through aliexpress, and seriously as long as you're not a complete newbie to online shopping, it's not that difficult to find a legitimate store selling perfectly usable generic or unbranded products at a fraction of the cost of the branded version and they all work just fine. i've easily saved thousands of dollars over the years this way. i don't understand why people are so against this - a lot of what they buy from amazon or supermarkets in fact come from china as well.
not sure if this comes across as dehumanizing, but trust me, the employers don't give a shit if the maids judge them. i don't know of anyone who has ever worried about being judged by their maids.
or in a more Black Mirror-esque reality, maybe after the human dies the robot no longer detects a heart rate or pulse and considers the corpse as trash and just disposes of it automatically.
move to Singapore then. they have full-time, live-in maids from indonesia or phillipines that can cost as low as USD 300-400 a month. i grew up in Singapore, where I had 3 maids on staff at all times, and they took care of everything, 24/7.
Re:Who Needs an Architect? (2003) [pdf] on Friday July 03, 2020 @01:56PM (#23726021)
is there something wrong with my approach? i'm a hard worker, i just want to be paid the maximum i can get for my work that's all.

How does someone with a CS degree get a non-coding tech job?

Motivated by the other post I read here, I noticed that there were a lot of people who have anecdotes on their colleagues or managers etc who are apparently completely removed from coding in their careers and yet manage to find themselves in technical leadership positions such as lead architect, etc.i'm someone with a business degree, as well as a computer science degree. i've tried, and do not...

i don't think this is the message you're trying to convey, but seriously i'm reading so many stories in this post about how non-technical people can get into these (presumably) high-paying architect jobs where they are not expected to do any coding... how do i apply for those jobs? i have 2 degrees, business and computer science, but i hate coding. so far, the most value i could have leveraged out of my CS degree without having to do coding is working as a technical project manager, but i know architects get paid WAY more. how do i find those jobs?
this is in BC. every 3-4 months, i keep calling, ask for "customer retention department" and threaten to leave. sometimes i just say "got any promos for me?" and they'll just offer whatever they can. sometimes if they have an attitude, i just hang up and call back for another more friendly agent. i've done this for the past 2 yrs and always ends up with at least a new $5/mth discount added to my bill, so by now my bill is super low.
not sure about collusion between the big 3, but for both my mobile and internet provider (2 different ones), i've successfully pitted them against each other by calling to say i'm switching over to their competitor and repeatedly got discounts for it. i'm currently paying $45/mth for 20gb from Fido Pulse BYOD plan with unlimited talk and text, and for home internet i'm paying $55/mth for 750mbps fibre from Telus.
so you're essentially going to become a Technical Project Manager. that's interesting - i'm searching for TPM jobs, maybe i should include implementation consultant postings as well.
yeah, but then you'd have to live in india.

wait... this comment is confusing. how is he not contributing towards "keeping the restaurant in business" by ordering delivery vs picking it up in person?
unless they're really bad bikes
Re:Good writing is a business advantage on Wednesday April 29, 2020 @05:55PM (#23024883)
not sure too many people caught your satire.
maybe try entry level project management jobs. i have a business and computer science degree, always more inclined towards the business side rather than technical or coding, and project management is perfect for that, plus it pays well.
Re:A Restaurant with No Leftovers on Friday January 03, 2020 @12:06PM (#21947808)
seriously? like, even if i'm heading out after dinner, i just leave the leftover box in the car. if it goes bad, then it goes bad, if it doesn't, great! lunch for next day.

and not sure how your food goes bad, if it's good in the restaurant... usually food doesn't go bad so quickly, but maybe you are one of those people who have some irrational aversion to leftovers (nothing wrong with that, my girlfriend is like that too) even though it's perfectly fine. right now i'm literally having reheated leftover pasta from a fine dining restaurant dinner last night, and i'm thoroughly enjoying it.

Re:A Restaurant with No Leftovers on Friday January 03, 2020 @12:01PM (#21947745)
this is key insight - large portions tend to be mostly massive quantities of cheap carbs like rice and potatoes. the expensive proteins tend to be very "sensible" portions lol.
Re:A Restaurant with No Leftovers on Friday January 03, 2020 @12:00PM (#21947731)
i might be confused, but are you suggesting ala carte restaurants all convert to some form of AYCE system? or would it be a single free refill for the REALLY HUNGRY? cause i'm a big boy and can eat quite a bit, but more so than that, i'm a HUGE value guy. if you tell me i pay the same price and get two plates of food IF i'm hungry versus one plate if i'm not, you better bet i'm only going when i'm hungry and can eat two plates.

i honestly don't see how anyone can possibly see your suggestion as a sensible one. by the way, if you cut my portion size in half, you better cut the price in half too, otherwise i'm not coming back. i'm going to that NEW restaurant across the street who offers what you used to. i love big portions because i can bring leftovers home - i don't care that other people who cannot control their appetites finish the whole plate instead and get obese, that's their own problem not mine.

Re:A Restaurant with No Leftovers on Friday January 03, 2020 @11:52AM (#21947650)
not sure where you're from, but i LOVE huge portions in restaurants because that means i have leftovers to take home for the next day. do most people not do that?
Re:Ask HN: What is your passive income 2019? on Tuesday October 29, 2019 @04:50PM (#21391856)
cannabis online store. my profit share currently nets me around than CAD10k per month.

started about a year ago when a few friends pooled money together to take over a failing online cannabis store, which are not legal in Canada but are sort of outside of law enforcement interest currently so we operate pretty freely at this moment. i've always been keen to do this as i've heard how profitable it is, so when they asked me to manage all the computer stuff in exchange for a small profit share, i agreed. i had minimal experience with SEO, but learned along the way how to tweak little things here and there, like which types of promos worked, etc and managed to do a decent job in the end. it did require some work at the beginning but once most of the things were set in place, my role was reduced down to mostly designing promos and customer service, which i performed simultaneously at my full-time job which i maintained. the customer service largely involves me just engaging with customers on Discord and answering emails.

it didn't start off 100% passive, and it probably still isn't considered passive, but i don't feel that i do much work for it now and i'm still getting paid roughly CAD10k. my next step is i'm in discussion with one of the partners to start up a new shop, this time as an owner.
