I once got into a "debate" with WalterBright and I mean, I dunno. The man's accomplished far more than me, but like.
This is why I absolutely will die on the hill that models can't be called open source if we don't have the source that created them.

Real brave of you to throw out that opinion with an account you made 20 minutes ago. Who's the real AI here?
Thank you for reminding me that, while Python is slow, there are still reasons to pick it over the alternatives.
What if you define robot as anything with an arm that can do arbitrary things?
Re:Governments are mishandling the affordability crisis on Sunday October 11, 2026 @10:41PM (#50050684)
Singapore's system of 99 year leases also comes to mind.
Re:Whatever became of holography? (2011) on Sunday October 11, 2026 @10:28PM (#50050598)
It's "just" an engineering problem at that point though. It works. First it'll be at Disneyland for tens of millions of dollars and then it'll be in Vegas for millions of dollars and then eventually we'll be able to get it at BestBuy for $1,999 in 40 years.
What's frustrating is that at the end of an event like a concert, everyone goes outside to catch an Uber/Lyft, but we then have to match driver to passenger, instead of having a line of waiting cars, each group just gets in the next available vehicle, shows the driver a QR code, instead of the mess we currently have. Why can't we do that? Taxi regulatory capture.
Glinet routers are already this.

Buy https://www.gl-inet.com/en-us/products/gl-mt3600be and move on with your life.

Alternately, what's the problem you're trying to solve? Who are your potential customers? Why do existing options in the market not address their needs?

With the caveat that Libya, being located upon Earth, is affected by solar power not working at night or when it's cloudy, and is also subject to being in Libya, which is a country with bureaucrats that are going to subject anything built in the country to their laws.
And Paris.

Re:Yes, and on Saturday October 10, 2026 @05:57PM (#50037601)
Maybe. Given how far they've come since 2022, on the one hand, that would be great for the industry and my continued employment but OTOH that, I'm sorry to say, sounds like wishful thinking, tbh. I'd love that just as much as you, because otherwise how am I gonna pay my bills? What's gonna happen if that doesn't materialize though?
Re:Ask HN: Do you still own a printer? on Saturday October 10, 2026 @07:51AM (#50031983)
These days a color laser isn't too much. Depends on your budget.
Re:When I type "hi" into Claude Code, what happens? on Saturday October 10, 2026 @06:10AM (#50031358)
I didn't really get the ending but what is there is cool.
Re:The Lightbulb Computer on Saturday October 10, 2026 @05:47AM (#50031242)
Projectors are cheap enough for this to work.
Re:Microsoft 365 Cuts Family OneDrive Storage from 6 TB to 2 TB on Saturday October 10, 2026 @04:55AM (#50030993)
There's already been multiple stories of AI deleting the code and the production database and the backups, but people are still YOLO-ing despite that. So you're right and it's not gonna stop people.
Re:I'm in a Meeting on Saturday October 10, 2026 @04:41AM (#50030937)
There's count down timer videos on YouTube with millions of views. Like, we live in such a time of digital excess that a video of a timer, thrown over the Internet, is just how some people do timers. I'm very confused by it all.
Re:REA Reverse – Engineer Anything on Saturday October 10, 2026 @04:33AM (#50030899)
What were the bugs?
Re:Has the Autonomous Trucking Revolution Arrived? on Saturday October 10, 2026 @12:27AM (#50029564)
I mean, if you're living in the truck that you're driving across country, back and forth, and your parents have passed, where would you put as your address? You don't have an apartment you're renting, because that would just be a waste of money since you're never there.
Re:Ask HN: Whats the first command you run on a new server? on Saturday October 10, 2026 @12:11AM (#50029484)
ssh funky.nondeterministic.computer
Re:Has the Autonomous Trucking Revolution Arrived? on Friday October 09, 2026 @11:59PM (#50029413)
Fully autonomous is a long ways off, but semi-automated can't get here fast enough. Drive a comma.ai equipped car over a long road trip or other advanced driving aid, and just feel how much less frazzled you are after driving for a few hours.
Re:Triple-A Minesweeper on Friday October 09, 2026 @11:38PM (#50029313)
theres an FPS version of minesweeper out there
I mean, it's a little like that. If I ask for a Todo app, it's not going to make me a chess game or rm -rf my files instead.
Re:The Dawn of the Age of the Exoskeleton on Friday October 09, 2026 @04:53PM (#50026447)
Painting the ceiling is tiresome and is one place an exoskeleton really helps. If someone can paint for 8 hours instead of 6, and be less physically bad off, the gain isn't measured in productivity, it's elsewhere.
I liked them! Can't please everyone though.
What's changed since then is AI can handle that shit for you. As a nerd, sure, I can scp to a Linux server, but with AI I just need to give it control of my computer and it can deal with the details. Meta's Muse is amazing as a product, despite some teething issues.
