Re:Show HN: I wrote my own Delicious clone on Friday December 17, 2010 @10:12PM (#2018774)
I've always wished Delicious would get more social and more niche-y. One particular idea I'm interested in is to uncover user bookmarking patterns and not just bookmark popularity. I wonder if this this clone experiment would play with these ideas:

+ Finding the people who shared the same bookmarks as you, and also measure how different they are from you: This might uncover bookmarks and areas of interests that weren't on my radar.

+ Look for users who have similar tagging patterns: Finding similar people would be handy, then I could subscribe to their bookmarks. Delicious has a feature called the user's Top 10 Tags. I wonder if there is a way to compare how similarly you tag with other users to find similar users?

+ When performing a search, look for the most popular bookmarks and the most unpopular to find more esoteric and possibly interesting items.

+ An RSS feed for people who bookmarked the same thing I did: as a way to find new people who share the same interests as you.

Re:Make Your Mockup in Markup on Saturday November 27, 2010 @12:15PM (#1945322)
Good print designers will know the possibilities and limitations of the medium they're working in. I think the same can be said about the screen medium.
Re:Review my Startup: jMockups - A Better Way to Web Design on Monday October 25, 2010 @02:40PM (#1830990)
Font rendering: I realize jMockups might only render "web-safe" fonts. But I would love to see an iteration that incorporates any typeface shared between a team of designers who have fonts locally stored. I have made attempts to switch to Inkscape, but it's inability to render different type formats is what is holding me back from using it.

Drawing path tools: This would be handy if I needed to create arrows and icons. I suppose I could draw them and import them as images; however, it would be really nice if I can draw them in directly!

Re:Review my Startup: jMockups - A Better Way to Web Design on Monday October 25, 2010 @01:52PM (#1830790)
I love where this is going. One thing that I would like to see included, which is absolutely essential for the way I design website is line-height: it is the core structure of my design and layout. (Read more about line-heights and vertical rhythms here: http://24ways.org/2006/compose-to-a-vertical-rhythm)

At this moment in time I feel trapped using Adobe products to produce my layouts. If jMockups solves the following problems in priority, I will make the switch!

1. Render fonts accurately 2. Render line-heights accurately 3. Better drawing path tools

Re:Apple Magic Trackpad on Tuesday July 27, 2010 @11:22AM (#1551498)
I love this idea, but how come they couldn't include this functionality into the Magic Mouse too? (Maybe next version?)
Re:How the Old Spice Videos Are Being Made on Thursday July 15, 2010 @10:37AM (#1517928)
Other crazy factors involved:

1. You can't smell the product when you're in the store, so you have to know more about the product either through brand awareness or referral.

2. Like cologne, the smell you give off from a deodorant is about projection. Who you want to smell like is probably going to be more of a priority to potential customers than what you want to smell like.

Re:How the Old Spice Videos Are Being Made on Thursday July 15, 2010 @10:19AM (#1517867)
I'm loving this new advertising strategy, but I'm still not going to buy this product. They've done a great job of making more people aware of the product, but I can't shake the image of my grandfather when I think of Old Spice! (which is not a bad thing, I just don't want to smell like grandfather!)
Re:Why men are attracted to women with small feet on Friday July 02, 2010 @04:00PM (#1482173)
This article makes no mention that preference might reflect contemporary culture and times.
Most video games have a pretty strict narrative: Finish the story or die. The ending of that story is often firm: I've rarely come upon a video game that actually has different outcomes based on the user's behavior/history.

I think Honda and Toyota are designing these devices for their growing elderly population in Japan.

It's good to read this again because I couldn't put my finger on it before: despite the ingenuity of the storage system, this guy is living with so much stuff that it feels claustrophobic.

Wait-a-sec, what about the kids over at Crisis Commons (http://oreil.ly/dm1OW0) and Grassroots Mapping(http://bit.ly/99sLWo) considered community journalists, and doing their best to work around the resources issue?
Re:Is there social value in shorting? on Sunday May 30, 2010 @04:39PM (#1391082)
Ahh, ok, so blind speculation about even positive outcomes is dangerous (and I can see how this can be just as abused as shorting). So, I can see why paying attention to who is shorting and why they are shorting it is equally important.

Personally: I'm by no means a financial person — just super curious about the usury and trading world and the recent blow up that occurred.

I'm also super curious to see how economics will change from this point forward.

(That article that I posted says that germany wants to ban naked short selling.)

Is there social value in shorting?

The value of investing (going long) in a business makes sense to me on a social level: it's people putting faith in other people that they will offer a good business to the market that will help them make a return on their investment. Even more simply put: it's people having faith in other people.Shorting on the other hand seems to make a mockery of society: it shows the behavior of some people...

"Too bad most of Wired's content is so resoundingly meh..."

Guess I know where they should really spend their time and money!

I'm also thinking that the actual production of interactive material is, when done relevantly, extremely time consuming. Can the cost of programming and interaction design stay on budget? Will $5 per issue be able to sustain this type of setup?

Also, I'm trying to remember the last time when an interactive infographic was enlightening... [remembering] nope, I can't remember!

For magazine and paper news journalism, I think they can improve their market by going further into the video medium, not the interactive medium.

I have a strange feeling we've been here before: Are Magazine apps going to be the new Flash website?
Re:Kickin It Old School With A Prepaid Phone on Saturday May 22, 2010 @12:25PM (#1370555)
Dug this Boy Genius Report article up from May 6th:

"The amount of voice minutes used by young adults continues to plummet as email, IM and SMS grows at a rate of 150% during the years 2007 to 2009. Factor in 1800% growth in mobile data in this segment and it’s pretty obvious Virgin is one of the few companies that actually caters to the demands of its customers."

Re:Kickin It Old School With A Prepaid Phone on Saturday May 22, 2010 @09:16AM (#1370256)
I will gladly pay for a phone outright if the carriers offer a data-centric plan for $50 a month with no commitment.

Until then, I'm hiding out this year with Google Voice and my Virgin Mobile prepaid. So far, it's been awesome and works out exactly for my needs. It sucks that I don't have decent mobile data: but I can wait a little longer until carriers realize they need to offer better and customized services.

I've saved about $400 this year so far by switching to my new setup. With the saved money, I have some new shiny clothes and have been enjoying eating out more!

Re:Debunking Michael Lewis’ The Big Short on Friday May 21, 2010 @10:25AM (#1367389)
I started reading this too, and did some tangential reading along the way.

I'd hate to be in the same room as 2010 Lewis and 2007 Lewis:

"But the most striking thing about the growing derivatives markets is the stability that has come with them. More than eight years ago, after Long-Term Capital Management blew up and lost a few billion dollars, the Federal Reserve had to be wheeled in to save capitalism as we know it." http://bit.ly/cg9H6w

Also this fun one from Janet Tavakoli:

"I was in the Salomon Brothers' 1985 training class that Michael Lewis lampooned in his amusing book, Liar's Poker. Imagine my surprise to see him billed as a trader on 60 Minutes, since he was actually a junior salesman. Well-heeled male peacocks strutted the trading floor, and junior salesmen were girlie-men, mere eunuchs serving their pashas." http://huff.to/9pclUR

I second this! Please someone buy back Delicious, or make a new one:

+ Delicious is lagging behind in mobile support.

+ Delicious could be taking more advantage of the conversation that people are having in their Notes section.

+ Delicious could be taking advantage of the links that are shared between users: help me find users that have similar but unique interests as I do. This would be true social networking on Delicious!

+ Delicious places priority on what is "Hot". This is not terribly useful since a lot of "Hot" links have already made the rounds on Twitter or in my Google Reader first.

+ Delicious could be taking advantage of links that are not yet popular but have a strong interest in category niches.

+ Delicious could be taking advantage of a user's top 10 tags: it's not an accurate assessment of a user's interest, but it gives me a quick assessment if I want to subscribe to their feed.

(I wish I could make another Delicious, but I'm not a programmer!)

Re:Ask HN: Why is Netflix becoming anti-social? on Sunday May 09, 2010 @07:14PM (#1333024)
I loved their .02 feature which was essentially like short little tweets you could send to other friends. It was super easy to use and before my friends ever understand how to use Twitter, they knew exactly how to use this feature.
Re:A pen for an iPad? on Sunday May 09, 2010 @02:11PM (#1332520)

Ask HN: Why is Netflix becoming anti-social?

I feel like Netflix is not giving us a straight answer on why they completely removed the Friends features from their service. It was half the reason I even use their service. One commenter left one good theory, but I'm curious if there are other good theories:"Here's why I think NF is killing the friends features. The company is buying fewer DVDs because it's moving towards total streaming....
