Yep, this is more or less a VAT in disguise
Re:US weighs Google break-up in landmark antitrust case on Wednesday October 09, 2024 @03:52PM (#41791929)
I miss old contextual advertising. Like you read a sports website, you see ads for matches, sports gear, etc, all based on the content not the user preferences.
I hope wherever money they are saving trying to enforce this lawsuit, lose 100X in lose subscriptions and PR. It's so mess up, where a company can enforce contracts from an unrelated service, just because they are the same holding company.

This is the type of behavior antitrust authorities should enter to break the company in different entities.

It's odd Time has such a control to effect an countries income just by choosing a good abbreviation. I doubt the creators of the DNS system had any idea that domains would arbitrarily give some countries an extra form of income, profiting from people who could care less about the country it was created for. Why didn't ISO just charge a flat fee for any string to resolve to an IP?
I wonder if this would become more common with things like ChatGPT.

Let's say you've been working in place A, you show your code to an LLM service (like the dozen or so Copilot-like services) and tell them to refactor. And for the sake of argument, let's say the LLM uses your code and questions for its next training dataset.

A few years pass, then you go to work at Place B, and ask a question that happens to be related to the problem that Place A's code solved, and they give you Place A's code as is.

I'm so grateful to John Riccitiello, without his pricing changes, not as many indie devs would have jumped on Godot.
No, this is a Cry (for the) Engine.

In an age where the typical user has to install and reinstall games because storage is limited and games are getting heavier and heavier... that's going to be a problem.
Feels Like Malicious Compliance, so MS can say "See, technically we're Repair Friendly" similar to Apple "repair program". But with those prices, unless the device has sentimental or software value, you're better buying a new one.

For some context in pricing, a battery for a framework laptop cost $59 US (now in discount for 50).

They should ask for the testimony of that famous hacker who leaked, I think his name was 4chan /s
Re:Wizards of the Coast sent the Pinkertons after a leaker on Wednesday April 26, 2023 @11:57AM (#35715814)
I'm stunned by this.

How is this even legal? The youtuber got the packs from the company through a logistical error, didn't sign an NDA or embargo agreement, and gets armed mercenaries at his door for 'leaking' when the company did.

This it's some criminal level of intimidation, something you expect from a gangster or a cyberpunk dystopia where companies bypass the state establishing arbitrary punishment for internal rules you didn't sing on.

I hope this guy lawyer up, and get as much as possible from them.

Why a company with the minimum brand awareness thought this was a good idea, it's still beyond me.

Re:Stable Diffusion 2.0 Release on Thursday November 24, 2022 @06:42PM (#33737450)
Yes and now. Yeah the VHS VS Beta situation was exaggerated, but you'll be surprised on how much on Netflix, and youtube UI tricks were stolen from innovation made in adult sites.

I'll even say that the high bandwidth push in the public was highly related to that. Even HTML5 video players, adult websites were faster to implement it than big streaming websites that still used flash or similar tech.

For a moment I tough was a parody of that meme of kids discussing "Is Fortnite Actually Overrated?"
Re:Niantic undergoes layoffs, cancels four games on Wednesday July 13, 2022 @09:28PM (#32090919)
I still like Pokemon Go, but being honest at this point I used it more like a Fitness app rather than a pure video game. After the initial boom, I think the game become a form of "sports social network" IRL, thanks to the Raids. Sadly after COVID, a lot of the friends I hang out playing, just stop it, and the game didn't innovate enough to be still fun to play in house to a large base.

So as much as I like the product, I find hard for Niantic to replicate the mainstream phenomena they had in 2016. I hope to be wrong, and they surprise with innovate like a AR wearable or a game with better mechanics. Sadly, I think those Layoffs are a reality check of the current state of their games.

I wonder the ROI behind this. I mean it's server maintenance cost VS PR image cost.

Ok, servers are expensive, but Ubisoft manage to recover after some reputation hits (and Blizzard distracting everyone being the main enemy in the public eye for a few months) and then, they do this.

And let's not get started with the potential risk of lawsuits (Buy a single player DLC game, but then you can not play it because someone turn off a switch?).

I love how this project looks. Feels closer to Metal Gear Solid 4 sci-fi bio-tech, than to regular mechanical arms.

Maybe falls a little bit under the uncanny valley but with clothes on, I could see this achieving a pretty natural look to a prosthetic, plus this type of design seems more analog to an actual arm in terms of control.

I know that there is a long way for real-life use, and maybe I'm naive because I don't know all the caveats that need to solved to make it feasible, but this type of tech gives always puts a smile on my face.

This is the case of "Buy, Borrow, Die" or "kick the can". The top 0.01% paying a lower percentage of taxes than even the lower tax bracket worker class.

If you are a wharever-ionaire you could put your gains in index S&P 500 shares, then use them as collateral, paying everything you need with credit and having a $1 annual salary. So technically, that $1 it's their only income to the IRS. But what about interest? with that collateral, you have a special rate close to (or even lower than) inflation. Then you die, the bank takes your shares to pay your debt, and that's it.

I can already see some newspapers releasing clickbait "Giving up Alcohol can give you dementia"
Re:Blizzard's Chief Legal Officer Quits Amid Lawsuit on Tuesday September 21, 2021 @12:14PM (#28606558)
It's amazing how in less than a decade (but especially the last 5 years), I have seen the optics in the public of Blizzard went from being one of the most beloved and respected gaming companies in the space (probably only compared to Valve), to one where it's today.

From the free speech / CCP fiasco, the hostile workplace for women, the crunch culture, games perceived as irrelevant despite being ground zero of the e-sports, and a lot of great talent just leaving the company. It's sad to look how a company that I enjoy their products for so long, being down to this.

And probably the saddest part it's that a lot of those problems were there from the start, but just recently started to being public.

Seem interesting and I liked... But, I'm afraid a DMCA will finish the project as the legal area seems dark gray at least.
this seems like a wework fallout
Do you run mac OS? Because I had this same issue with a macbook, when jump to Windows and Linux, the CPU keep the same as Chrome, but in mac Firefox was slow, and make the fans be at top speed.
Re:Reddit bans 'deepfakes' AI porn communities on Wednesday February 07, 2018 @06:29PM (#16328932)
What's scare me the most it's not the porn. But the fact that make this kind of tech it's kinda-avaliable to anyone with a GPU and a few hours of learning and training.

The only thing that make this not a treat to your regular folk it's the fact that needs a lot of images references to make the model, but imagine a politician or activist, they have a lot of images on the net; So this can take the fake news to another level. Yeah if this happens the news media and legal system, will probably not take shady videos seriously without verification (specially now, that the algorithm it's still is in the middle of the uncanny valley, so for the moment it's easy to recognize without experts need). But think about your friend, uncle or cousin that shares his "echo chamber" posts on facebook?

Or who knows, maybe I should't binge black mirror, and this only gets limited to porn and good uses. Like a new era for stunts in movies.

I wonder how many of this have change with now monitors being LCD LED, CCFL or even OLED instead of the traditional CRT. Specially in the "Radiation Emitted" department.
Re:Free Speech Leftists Still Exist on Thursday January 04, 2018 @05:54PM (#16074885)
I think one of the multiple factors that helped the right to add a lot of people to their pool in the last years, it's because the regressive part of the left have abandoned the thesis of "I will defend your right to speech even if I don't like what you said" instead going for the "Let's censor all that hurt my (subjective) feelings". Of course this it's not the left in general, but a small but vocal minority.

Probably the best way to fight a bad argument (e. Racism, Sexism, etc) it's not to censorship, but educate and discuss about it, and expose the fallacies in their logic. Censor ideas we don't like, gives them a martyr status. Of course it's hard and requires work, but at the long term freedom of speech it's a great investment for a democratic society.

Re:Sitting May Be Bad for Your Heart on Friday December 22, 2017 @12:10PM (#15989018)
I hope this study don't revive the trend of standing desks again. Look I know being sedentary will rob me a few years of life, but going full opposite and being stand 9 to 5 it's Dante inferno at work. Probably the best balance will be having a routine with exercise present, and small breaks to stand and walk a little bit at X minutes sitting.
Re:Announcing CoffeeScript 2 on Monday September 18, 2017 @12:13PM (#15277132)
I don't know what to think about coffeescript anymore. I love it back then before babel and ES6, but right know I didn't even know how to use coffee and a library used today. Still miss the python/ruby-sque sintaxt witouth brackets.

Edit: After reading more about the changes about CS 2.0, I may give it one more chance, let's see how it work now.

Re:Blender 2.79 released on Wednesday September 13, 2017 @08:33AM (#15237642)
I'm not him. But as a front-end too my guess can be a few: * WebGL and 3D Models * Creation of Assets for web * Maybe something more abstract like prototypes, flow control, etc
Re:‘I dye my hair brown to be taken more seriously at work’ on Monday September 11, 2017 @07:29AM (#15217669)
It amaze me how usually most schools for children don't have a class called "Logic 101" or something like, where we can teach people about Confirmation bias and that "Correlation != Causation".

God knows how many BS like this we could save if only people treated stereotypes as such, simple narratives easier to understand when we tell in stories, but aren't truth when applied to individuals in the real complex life we are.
