Re:Kagi Is Bringing Orion Web Browser to Linux on Saturday March 15, 2025 @03:54PM (#43374799)
Hope this work out because I really want to use it but I can't because of this.
The problem is that, looking back at GNOME history, we get curious about what really happened.

But Sonny is not protesting or something, so we cannot say anything about it.

Seems like a wonderful regime according to Tucker Carlson, Heritage Foundation and MAGA Republicans. Putin is a true conservative, champion of liberty, to them.
Whataboutism doesn't change that Spotify is right in this instance.
Mitchell Baker was important for Mozilla/Netscape in the past. She was the primary author of Mozilla Public License in 1998 (MPL 2.0 is a very good license). I bet that many of us were just infants when she was at Mozilla.

The problem is that many feel that she is not a good leader for Mozilla today, not that she is not a historical figure for Mozilla and the open source community in general.

With Mitchel Baker at helm, all the initiatives that would make Firefox more embeddable were cancelled to cut cost.

Now Firefox can't be used to make webapps effectively, the only alternative is to use Electron and fortify Chromium's monopoly.

The problem is that Gecko is not that customizable, everything in Firefox is tightly integrated, and they abandoned all initiatives to make Gecko embeddable -- and this was a very big mistake imo.

If Mozilla tried to address this, I think many Chromium-based browsers today would at least try the possibility to be Gecko-based.

They did with Thunderbird, and Thunderbird is becoming better.
Does no mechanism exist to fire Mitchell Baker or, at least, addressing her leadership at Mozilla?
Unfortunately, nothing non-Chromium based.
People complain all the time and nothing changes. She doesn't care and in a month everybody forget that Firefox is in dire straits.

Google's Chromium project push new standards every month or so, and web developers are fast to adopt these standards and don't care about testing it on Firefox anymore. The Chromium monopoly is already a reality.

Re:ChromeOS is Linux with Google’s desktop environment on Thursday October 05, 2023 @06:56PM (#37785274)
Google should invest in ChromeOS as a serious PC/Laptop OS. It is ridiculous that Google made the choice to make ChromeOS the "cheap" OS.
Re:Firefox Money: Investigating the Finances of Mozilla on Sunday August 06, 2023 @06:24AM (#37020599)
She is an old timer that is with Mozilla since the beginning. Should be pretty hard to challenge her from the inside after Brendan Eich departure.

What I have to say is that Brendan Eich lost his respect with hia peers inside Mozilla after donating for the campaign against gay marriage, so it was entirely his fault.

Mitchell Baker needs to go and let people do their job.
Re:GNU Boot sent a cease and desist to Libreboot on Saturday July 29, 2023 @11:41PM (#36927599)
Your context is important and I said what I remembered that happened in that time. LukeShu also corrected my comment more extensively.

Thanks for correcting me!
Re:GNU Boot sent a cease and desist to Libreboot on Saturday July 29, 2023 @11:07PM (#36927417)
Okay, I will give you that. GNU Boot is probably part of the GNU Project, given the tone of the GNU Boot maintainer, but GNU Project itself is not part of this drama.
Re:GNU Boot sent a cease and desist to Libreboot on Saturday July 29, 2023 @10:56PM (#36927364)
Because libreboot.at was a website from the maintainers that were booted by Leah when she took over the Libreboot project after abandoning it.

GNU Project or FSF has nothing to do with it, the guys of GNU Boot are only associate members of FSF.

Re:GNU Boot sent a cease and desist to Libreboot on Saturday July 29, 2023 @10:44PM (#36927302)
This is highly personal, and it is pretty sad that the GNU project name is being involved in this drama that doesn't have much to do with them.

They (GNU Boot) don't want her help, and I understand why they don't like her. The fact she is making more drama from it is more proof that she is not trustworthy.

Re:GNU Boot sent a cease and desist to Libreboot on Saturday July 29, 2023 @10:38PM (#36927265)
They didn't try to take over the Libreboot. They were maintaining until Leah took over in a very unethical way.

You can see that they abandoned the Libreboot name and founded GNU Boot, that Leah is now trying to take over (the name) too.

Anyway, this drama is highly personal and Leah is not a trustworthy person.

Re:GNU Boot sent a cease and desist to Libreboot on Saturday July 29, 2023 @10:34PM (#36927242)
Isn't Leah the person that sold ThinkPads on behalf of Libreboot, didn't send it, then put the blame on her mental issues?

Then she abandoned the project and let the contributors take over, after some time she booted them with fake accusations, banned them from their IRC channel and took over the project. The contributors complained that she didn't even have the decency of contacting them, but she was adamant of taking the Libreboot name for her again to sell used Laptops. This was also the moment that she began to add binary blobs to Libreboot.

They founded the GNU Boot project and she, not satisfied, created another "GNU Boot" just to say that their project is "inferior" and now she complains about a "cease and desist" of a person that rightfully don't like her.

Re:Brave is a fork, not a Chromium reskinn on Thursday July 27, 2023 @11:10AM (#36894793)
They are handling "fine" because they only do low complexity changes.

I remember that people asked, some years ago, to Brave team add add-ons in their Android reskin and they, after some time, rejected because they said that what Kiwi Browser were doing was too complex for them because it required too many patches.

They were not even able to modify Mv3, they just said that they already added an adblock.

Brave and Vivaldi are mere reskins, and they don't do anything more than Ungoogled Chromium do, but adding their own bloat.

Re:Brave is a fork, not a Chromium reskinn on Thursday July 27, 2023 @10:59AM (#36894617)
Most Chromium reskins are limited forks, they are always dependent on Google decisions and will always comply (Mv3).

Brave and Vivaldi are exactly that, at least they could use Ungloogled Chromium codebase instead of repatching things.

Isn't SUSE devaluing their own distro in entering this RHEL-clone debacle?
Re:The Path Forward for Rocky Linux on Sunday June 25, 2023 @09:57AM (#36468237)
I would like to see how they will bypass RHEL agreements and not be a CentOS Stream downstream.
You guys could just add noreferrer to all links.
