Ask HN: Why there are two gmail's profile pictures?

Although in order to get the right answer I should rephrase this as a wrong statement instead of a questionSo .. when you are browsing a gmail thread, there's a small picture right next to the senders' name.. Now if you hover that picture, a small contact card opens, which also contains a picture..I've seen quite a few behaviors and I'm curios about why it does what it does:- a profile picture...

Tell HN: Gmail wont allow to download an old zip with _my_ code

Today I was talking about some old code that I wrote like about 8 years ago, and I mentioned that I still keep a copy of all of it.Then when looking for the zip file that I've sent to myself about 8 years ago .. I've found that Google refuses to give me _my_ code because: For security reasons, Gmail does not allow you to use this type of file as it violates Google policy for executables and...

Ask HN: Please AWS team, make links work with control-click

Hey AWS team,If you are reading this, please please make CTRL-click to open a new page. It's really frustrating to try to open a link in a new page just to see that the page navigated, and then if you click the back button, you end up nowhere near where you were before.I really love the new UI, it's really good! and with this feature we could be more productive and use AWS even more!!

Ask HN: Do we still need browsers?

Yesterday it's been discussed about AMP protect and now seems clear to me that restricting access to publishers equals to better experience for the user --along w publishers not having a revenue stream (side note: that's another big problem and probably needs to be part of this conversation, but I'll purposely leave that aside just to focus on the user's POV)This also could explain the ad...

Ask HN: How big/small is NPM compared to the biggest in the industry?

Just was reading some projects and it amaze me the countless of man-hours in effort and all the value the ecosystem was able to generate in such short life span.I wonder if it's possible to compare the npm ecosystem to others, especially the mammoths in the industry, in terms of value added, not just LOC --although that may be a good start. As always measuring value is highly subjective, so I'm...

Ask HN: Redirect to reply?

When you reply to a comment the action redirects back to the page, and you end up on the same thread but at the top.It could be useful to be redirected straight to the comment we just sent, in order to keep the conversation flow. This will be most useful on long threads, when it's easier to lost track on where you were reading.I'm not in the pc right now, but seems like a simple `#commentId` at...

Ask HN: Would HN still be HN without the financial incentives?

Suppose that HN were a place where people just share their experiences and collaborate with each others --no money involved-- would it still had the same attraction?Certainly I'm here for the intellectual knowledge and the good discussions, not to get financial aid, so I'm curious about what are the incentives that attracts so much people and what is that makes HN.. well.. HNIs this something...

Ask HN: So what's next?

We now know that many organizations gather information of everybody, they build profiles, analyze people's metadata, they can put you in a bucket, apply a dozens of data-mining techniques to find targets, segments (which is only a nicer way to say simply people)They can predict what are we going to do, when, and where..We now know that metadata is the new commodity. There are data's buyers,...
