Nice to use the same idea as Galileo's "Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems"

Re:A word used only by Postgres developers on Friday March 11, 2022 @04:21PM (#30646172)
I think in the some cases like people mentioned above, it's no longer collaboration but more of a consultation. The benefit is only going in one direction: to the consultantee. In that case, you need some way to make the nature of that relationship explicit and valued. Otherwise these consultants begin to feel they're being put in a position of working for someone else without management recognizing that and compensating it as such.
Did any of these legal (not to mention ethical) questions come up when they applied for YC?
Re:FCC Takes Stronger Aim at Robocalls on Monday July 17, 2017 @02:16AM (#14786074)
I pay $6/year for:

I actually get excited when I get telemarketers because the robot sometimes fools them enough to keep them on the line for a few minutes. The longer the conversation, the more irritated the telemarketers get, and that's quite satisfying. Here's some sample calls:

Re:'Clean your desk': My Amazon interview experience on Thursday December 08, 2016 @03:41PM (#13134091)
Hm, perhaps counting number of bits set to 1 in a multi-byte array?
Re:Robocalls have triumphed over the Do Not Call list on Saturday May 28, 2016 @06:11PM (#11793810)
I agree - I pay $2/month to Jolly Roger and since then my robocalls have dropped to nothing. I actually miss getting them because it's so fun to hear Jolly Roger frustrate them.
Very nice.. Found my own species in a few click!
Re:A Traditional City Primer on Saturday July 26, 2014 @06:03PM (#8090969)
I disagree - it is very much worth reading. Even without a single word the pictures make a powerful statement. It presents a typology of built environments and makes the important point that human-scaled, walkable environments are found throughout the world and share some important advantages that the recent places we've built do not.
Re:Libertarians/conservatives launch hackathon on Saturday June 07, 2014 @11:33PM (#7863893)
Fair enough. What about the plantation land? Fair game for redistribution to the slaves, or would that be a violation of the plantation owners' property rights?
Re:Libertarians/conservatives launch hackathon on Saturday June 07, 2014 @09:16PM (#7863646)
Lincoln seems like an odd choice for a libertarian role model. He suspended habeas corpus and expropriated the Southerners' private property (their slaves, plantations, etc). If he hadn't been assasinated, all of that plantation land would have likely have been divied up among the former slaves. Spreading the wealth, the horror!
I was born in shower brass field. Sure, it's not as well known as kicks pasta steer, but it was a great place to be born.
Re:Reference Check Job Candidates on Friday March 15, 2013 @06:49PM (#5383466)
"a good reference (where the candidate doesn't work out) gets you sued by the company"

Really? Has this ever happened with the plaintiff ending up winning in court?

The "red mafia"? Who or what is this?
Re:DNC just open-sourced their voter registration platform on Saturday September 01, 2012 @11:07PM (#4465982)
I used Apache Fop (http://xmlgraphics.apache.org/fop/) to convert XML to PDF at a previous job. It was extremely painstaking work. On the other hand, it gives you a lot of fine-grained control over the appearance of your PDF.
Thanks for the introduction to Prey. Just installed it!
Re:Twitter crashes itself with commas on Tuesday July 17, 2012 @03:02PM (#4257277)
Not sure if this is related, but starting yesterday, I've had to switch from Firefox to Chrome for twitter - Firefox uses all my RAM and beachballs.
Re:BYOD is unstoppable. Smart companies must build apps on Monday April 09, 2012 @01:57AM (#3815969)
"The value proposition of the API proxy increases dramatically if it is able to map between the security protocol of choice in the mobile world, OAuth, and the existing security infrastructure in the enterprise."

The problem is that OAuth is only Authorization - you still need Authentication. It seems to me you'd want to use SASL with mobile devices so that your mobile clients can connect to your enterprise's Kerberos or Active Directory Server. Haven't tried this, but maybe this would be a good start for Android devices: https://github.com/koterpillar/android-sasl

(seen here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3327615/is-there-sasl-imp...)

Re:Play Framework 2.0 Final released on Tuesday March 13, 2012 @03:17PM (#3699897)
Some interesting criticism of Play here - seems similar to what's been said about the lack of unit tests.

Thanks, interesting site!
Re:Cars kill cities on Thursday January 26, 2012 @12:58PM (#3515140)
It depends a lot on the circumstances. Here's a recent situation where the decision to make some streets in Chinatown pedestrian-only and removing parking on others (if only for a day) was supported and well-received by merchants:

Re:Using Hadoop and HBase with Clojure on Monday January 16, 2012 @07:56PM (#3473309)
Please also have a look at something similar I've done which I called "hsk" (Hadoop Starter Kit):

Re:Clojure on Hadoop: A New Hope on Thursday November 03, 2011 @02:45PM (#3193121)
"LISP has been around some 50-odd years without taking off despite several attempts at its revival... I suspect something is wrong with it"

I laughed out loud at that.

Re:Clojure's Noir releases 1.1.0 with full set of docs on Tuesday July 26, 2011 @04:54AM (#2806574)
Very nice, thanks for creating this. Looking forward to playing more with Noir, and using it for my own little clojure side project: https://github.com/ekoontz/italianquiz .

Comments: 1. Make "your welcome page" a link to "/welcome", and also some text indicating that we need to edit the file src/noirsite/views/welcome.clj.

2. How do we get ring (or maybe it's jetty) to not cache pages, so a reload will reflect updates to welcome.clj?

3. deleting: "[noir.content.pages :as pages]" from welcome.clj (as the initial startup page says to do) gives me an error:

Re:Java7 Hotspot broken? on Saturday July 23, 2011 @07:20PM (#2798123)
I noticed that the Ubuntu images on EC2 (search the Community AMIs for "oneiric") provide Java 7 if you want to try it out for yourself. I tried it out briefly and it worked ok for me on running Apache Zookeeper.

17 years here and I am happy to make my acquaintance with Follow Mode! :)
Re:Best way to learn PHP on Saturday July 23, 2011 @07:00PM (#2798085)
I applaud his effort to explain how to learn PHP, especially glad to hear that the #php community is polite and helpful. On the other hand, I would not recommend reading the manual as a way to learn a language. The PHP online reference is excellent but it's a reference. Rather than just plowing through it, I'd recommend an introductory book/video/tuturioral, then start working on your idea and keep the manual open in a browser tab! :)
Seriously though, I found it interesting and am glad it was on Hacker News. Social engineering is engineering, and engineering is Hacker News. You are minimizing the harm and cost in a society by providing a place where people can safely use alcohol. It's far better and cheaper than leaving them to do it on the streets.
It's late Saturday night in California? :)
