Sounds predatory and deceptive, like a cult.
Re:Show HN: How Useless Are You? A brutally honest skills check on Thursday October 16, 2025 @02:51PM (#45609226)
I'm wondering what's the objective?

I typed in a bit of an answer, there's not a whole lot to go on, there's no room for me to ask questions about this scenario or get data.

When I filled out an answer it just told me I was useless. I don't really get the point. What was I supposed to learn?

> working hard at creating value does,

You'll have to explain to me what a person at work is doing, then? I mean, if they're not creating excess value by working at a job, whose value is then sold at a surplus over what they get paid, why does that job exist? Why did they get hired?

What exactly do you think people at 'normal jobs' are doing at work all day?

A drone framework for managing different HW resources, similar to an operating system
software supply chain issues. they may try to fork their own everything in time, if it gets that bad...

the same reason the US had to find out how chinese rare earth magnets made it in to the F35, for example.

that's what a super epic opsec troll would want you to think

maybe part of it, certainly many reasons for this decision.

more likely, it's a constructive layoff and they want to justify real estate cap-ex

i dunno what privacy/civil laws are like there, but couldn't the police or courts compel Kandula to surrender the password?

this reminds me of when Yahoo banned work from home in the late 2000s because they said the VPN data said they weren't working

Re:996 working hour system on Wednesday April 10, 2024 @01:08PM (#39993103)
I'm dubious about this. I've worked similar schedules and I just didn't see a point in living.
Re:996 working hour system on Wednesday April 10, 2024 @01:03PM (#39993033)
how productive can a person bee if they wake up, immediately commute to work, labor for 12 hours(!), and then immediately commute home, sleep?
Canonical made me do a personality test.

From what I understand, Canonical culture isn't great, either. The whole process sounds a lot like what you are talking about -- just hoops to winnow out people for the sake of winnowing.

Re:Ask HN: Terrified I wont find another job on Monday December 18, 2023 @09:06PM (#38690948)
i've thought about that, trucking could be vulnerable to AI in the next few years...but after Starsky closed, I dunno. Lots of AV shops are kinda in doubt, but we'll see.

thanks for the advice.

Re:Ask HN: Terrified I wont find another job on Monday December 18, 2023 @09:04PM (#38690934)
i'd be happy with a regular software job, for sure.

I wouldn't say sustaining engineering (the bugfixing) was 'coasting' exactly. It's hard work, like a a crime drama every week, day. it can be quite challenging. :)

Re:Ask HN: Terrified I wont find another job on Monday December 18, 2023 @09:02PM (#38690923)
i would love a boring software job. Bug fixing is usually like that ('cept when it's not) :)
Re:Ask HN: Terrified I wont find another job on Sunday December 17, 2023 @05:04PM (#38676936)
it is, and if we ever get a software engineer union this is one of the first things we should target.
Re:Ask HN: Terrified I wont find another job on Sunday December 17, 2023 @01:33AM (#38670834)
that's a good point...i have this fear because i've had terrible experience interviewing. i've been closer to the edge than this before...

one reason I stayed at my previous place for 10 years was because i just couldn't interview well...i know better about modern interview practices, which is why i practice so much ( 2-3 hours per day). it feels so far away tho.

Re:GPU Desktop Calculator on Sunday December 17, 2023 @01:25AM (#38670802)
i had the same thoughts, but one usecase was to quickly create GPU calculations. i wanted to allow users to create GPU kernels but without having to write a kernel.

Data has to get transferred from the GPU eventually, so breaking it up into steps back and forth does seem like over (under?) kill. Hopefully, since they're pipes in memory it won't be so bad as going to disk.

Ask HN: Terrified I wont find another job

currently in bay area. quit 10 months ago because of health reasons. 110% better now, thank goodnessi've mostly done lifecycle software engineering for the last 10 years (python c++ javascript). I rarely got to develop features; happened a couple times in the last year. I enjoyed bug fixing but it's such a rare position to find. i've gotten a few interviews, more coming.i've never gotten a job...

I'm surprised nobody is talking about a common understanding that IQ is not what separates the best startups from everyone else... I seem to remember PG saying that the initially thought that the smartest people would be the most successful in HNs early days but found out that's not the case
Re:A career ending mistake on Tuesday February 22, 2022 @02:46PM (#30432688)
What are the other career destinations I should look out for?
I thought a lot about it since then, and I still think about it even before this whole crisis...

You're being overly pessimistic saying nobody cares or remembers... We just can't do anything about it so we don't talk about it

Re:Ask HN: Who's sick of remote work? on Thursday February 10, 2022 @06:01PM (#30293998)
Maybe go somewhere else that has people but doesn't involve coworkers, or work? Nature is always a good bet.

What's stopping you from leaving the house?
