A behemoth indeed but the numbers also tell an interesting story. For TV screen share, Youtube has ~13% of total US viewing time vs ~6% for Paramount/Warner. They also go into this merger with staggering debt which does not bode well.

Elon musk is quoted as saying the Delta CEO will lose his job over not committing to Starlink [1]. This comes across as petulant rather than professional.
The bigger issue is that a boycott of a major legacy airlines like Delta is virtually impossible to sustain due to the structural monopolies in place. The prices are out of control and I'm more concerned about that, than WiFi.

No one used to care about elections in other countries, but it seems political polarization is truly globalized now. An election in one country seems to carry such heavy stakes for citizens elsewhere. Why? Transnational disinformation? Sad time.

Re:What AI-Native Looks Like
on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @10:02AM (#49816342)
13,000 tests. That tells you everything you need to know. It doesn't matter how experienced you say you are, if AI is doing all the work including writing and running tests because I know no human is actually reviewing these. I've recently found tests written by Fable that don't actually do anything in a very large codebase. My point is not to advocate for doing any of this manually, but to highlight one of the problems brought about by pumping out so much code.
I hate to sound cynical, but I don't know if bragging about being AI-native is something any of us should be doing. We're really just pulling a lever on a slot machine and crossing our fingers.

Re:Senate Blocks Cryptocurrency Regulation

Ordinarily regulation is favored by liberals and opposed by conservatives. This particular regulation flips that dynamic. As they say -- Follow the money. The exchanges want it so they don't have to deal with the SEC any more. The president wants it, mostly because it validates World Liberty Financial, meme coins, and the questionable money made ($500 million in reported revenue).

Re:I Used AWS Cognito for a Startup. I Wouldn't Do It Again
on Friday August 28, 2026 @11:47AM (#49480316)
I both hate and love Cognito. Hate it for its unnecessary complexity, love it for providing auth at bargain bin prices. I review Auth0 contracts frequently and that is daylight robbery/extortion, a poster child for vendor-lock-in. I had hopes for clerk.dev, but unfortunately the auth business optimizes for deep lock-in + steadily escalating prices.
After working through a few transitions to/from Auth0 that is something I never ever want to do again at scale.

Re:Africans Are Turning to Starlink
on Saturday July 04, 2026 @05:34AM (#48784095)
Worth remembering that many African telcos are not just mobile phone/data providers but also digital wallets (mobile money) - much of the GDP flows through them. Companies like Safaricom are the de facto financial utility of the country, so they are not going anywhere any time soon. That said Starlink is forcing the telcos to innovate and expand footprints. They’ve held very comfortable politically protected monopolies for far too long.

The open secret here is that we have a system that collects billions (~$100 billion annually[1]) in unclaimable taxes while keeping the labor force just vulnerable enough to stay cheap. That said, ICE's actions seem like self sabotage.
