News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Hi all!

At the start of this year, I vibe-coded this email client to replace Apple Mail for my daily use. The original goal was something native and lightweight, but it quickly morphed into tinkering with the idea of viewing my inboxes as feeds (and organizing them that way). It's still lightweight, but now includes a tagging system that automatically categorizes emails so they can be displayed in a multi-feed format.

Like many others, something I built to learn what frontier models could do has become something I use daily. After months of use and refinements, I figured it's time to let everyone else in on it (haha).

For now, the project's scope is still narrow. MacOS only, Gmail only. The organization is purely client-side. Other than sending email, nothing gets reported back to the email server. I have set it up in a way that it could support other email services, namely outlook. And given the tooling, it could be deployed to other platforms (Windows a/o Linux). Personally, I do all my emailing from a Mac, hence why I haven't lol. But if others wanted to light that torch I'd be happy to support them!

From what I understand, there's no standard implementation of the standard. So each implementation is unique in some ways. Therefore a "unified" experience is impossible.

I had a fire 8 that I tried for a while. But found the low-res to make it uncomfortable. Is yours a paperwhite?
Re:Ask HN: Does anybody still use bookmarking services? on Thursday June 23, 2022 @09:34AM (#31848894)
Funnily enough, I made a CLI tool recently that bookmarks SSH connection strings. https://github.com/IamFlowZ/ssh-bm
Status update: this was a fantastic question. One that I believe convinced myself and my interviewer even more that we were a good match.
Fantastic point. Innocent enough of a question but could serve as a canary in the coal mine.
when I grow up, I want to be a dev like you lol
Re:Ask HN: Cloud vs. Dedicated Hosting on Monday May 16, 2022 @08:17AM (#31396050)
This video provides a great lens for thinking about the cloud 'spectrum'. Using it as a lens, your product is living somewhere in the middle, and what you're proposing is at one end of the spectrum. Again siding with your CTO, your job is to deliver value, not infrastructure. Maybe you save a few dollars in app costs, but you'll more than eat through those savings in maintaining infrastructure.

Re:Ask HN: How to Nuture a Culture of Reading? on Thursday April 28, 2022 @10:44AM (#31193089)
That's an interesting approach. Piggy backing off of something users were already actively reading to insert useful blips.

Ask HN: How to Nuture a Culture of Reading?

Kinda a follow up to a front page post this week about writing patterns for companies. The biggest (and most valid) concern with it was, that patterns of writing is not the problem, but problems with reading the writing is. This resonated pretty deeply with my experiences as well, so I was wondering if anyone has had any success creating rigging that encouraged team members to read what others...

They were pretty active here on hacker news tbh. They got a lot of people pretty excited.

I do! I'm sponsoring this effort to catch linux trackpad software up to mac standards. Not affiliated with them in any other way, was simply blown away by a friends magic pad, right about the same time this project started. https://github.com/gitclear/libinput

edit: I also like to buy merch from OSS affiliated companies. e.g. mozilla hoodie, Neo4j shirt etc.

Re:Microsoft launches a personalized news service, Microsoft Start on Thursday September 09, 2021 @03:52PM (#28473904)
Is anyone else exhausted by the constant barrage of "personalized" experiences? Its always been about click rate for advertisers, but now they push their monetization model as a feature and it just feels draining.
could maybe do something like tweetdeck and have new listed adjacent to the main page...
I'm surprised you didn't launch on producthunt. Definitely think that crowd would get a kick out of it

Edit: I now see their producthunt page. It didn't pop up while searching /shrug
